It is not bad. Food was great, but it can get a bit pricey for a family. We went with kids, the presentation of food was beautiful, however as a family of four we felt a little cramped in small seating space…

I love, love, love, love Matsu Sushi. Although we can’t afford it all the time(God, to be wealthy and not a social scientist), it is our go-to special occasion place in Peterborough. The food is amazing; well plated and very fresh. Great rolls and excellent sashimi. The staff is incredibly friendly, especially the owner. He always greets every guest and really goes out of the way to make you feel welcome in the establishment. However, this place can get pretty busy, so it can take a while to be seated. Then again, I don’t mind a bit of a wait for an excellent dinner.

I was driving through Peterborough, and got takeout from this restaurant. For a Tuesday night, it seemed quite busy, with about three quarters of the tables full. I ordered a red dragon roll, and a spicy salmon roll(called a hunter roll). Their Red dragon roll comes with tuna; it was pretty standard, and tasted good. The hunter roll had far too many crispy tempura flakes, and too little salmon. I would say that about 80% of its filling was the crispy tempura flakes, which were not actually crispy, but more soft in texture. I wouldn’t recommend this roll. The service was good and prompt, and in particular, the sushi chefs seemed to know many of the regulars, and were very friendly. I would definitely be willing to give to place another chance, and a lot of people seem to like it. It’s possible that if I came back again, I may really like it, but it’s hard to overlook the hunter roll. It’s also on the expensive side, at least compared to similar restaurants in Toronto.

Stopped in for a quick lunch and it was awesome. From the time they greet you when you walk in until they say farewell when you leave the service was exceptional. The chef(possibly the owner) delivered our maki and made sure everything was as it should be(arranged our plates and everything!) We ate the Rose Maki, Rainbow Maki and Alaska Maki and all were fantastic. Great selection of vegetarian and rice-free options. Would definitely come back if ever in the area again.

Always satisfied at Matsu. This is our go to Sushi spot and having traveled a lot and experienced sushi in major cities, Matsu is right up there with the best.

Really, really good sushi. Not all you can eat, and I think it’s the only place in peterborough that isn’t, and quite expensive compared to everywhere else.

Writing specifically about Matsu on Hunter. I have tried most of the sushi restaurants in town and this is by far the best. Their services is amazing. We are always welcomed with a warm greeting and the servers are very pleasant. If its really busy it can take awhile for the food to be delivered but when that is the case we are usually brought appetizers on the house. The food is amazing. Consistent good quality and fresh. Portions are reasonable. I would totally recommend this place to anyone! I have tried the other Matsu on park street. Its not as awesome. But the Hunter street location is fantastic.

If you want the best sushi in Peterborough! The quality of food is above and beyond other sushi places. The customer service is warm and friendly regardless of if you dine in, get take out or delivery.

Peterborough so far has impressed me with food. Unfortunately this sushi joint missed the mark. Walked in to be warmly greeting by the staff. My server had no idea about the menu. I ordered scallop maki and she had no idea what I was talking about. I proceeded to point to it at the menu and she looked at me weird. I put it closer to her face then she took the menu and went to go ask the sushi chef. She was confused most of the time and brought the incorrect items. Miso soup — bland with no seaweed! Salad — soaked in way too much dressing. Soft shell crab — over-fried and had some weird batter. Definitely not traditional. Spicy scallop — poorly made and didn’t taste fresh. Sashimi Dinner — fish portion was huge but did not taste fresh. Yellowtail is disgusting and rubbery. I could handle the salmon but still wasn’t awesome. I don’t plan on coming back here for sushi. Maybe they do a better job with their other items as their menu is huge. Don’t plan on great service either.

My whole family loves Matsu sushi! The best sushi, maki & freshest sashimi in town. Love their rice less makis & their grill squid or octopus. Eel are prepared properly & it does not have that fishy taste or smell. Sometimes language barrier might interfere with minute details but generally not a problem. Nothing beats 70 pieces with a free roll for $ 50! We keep coming back, evident of the Polaroid pictures all over the restaurant lol.

Pretty damn good sushi and good Korean bbq, without all the kimchi. I had a vegetable roll(oshinko, campyo) and it was great. The squid bbq was good, but I missed all the kim chi I’m used to elsewhere. Very good sake, but not dry and we had a great time.

Was in the area and decided to give this restaurant a try since had craving for Japanese, and they seemed to have received the best rating for Japanese in Peterborough. The food was only so-so. Service was ok. I am finicky when it comes to the sushi rice,…so when they used under cooked(hopefully it wasn’t stale rice) in my California roll, I am a bit concerned since I think cooking rice is a basic skill for this type not in the hurry to try this restaurant again.

While at our cottage, we go into town each year for a night out. Our tradition used to include Pizza Hut, but now that our palettes have evolved so should our dining choices. Peterborough is a great food town, and Matsu is no exception I made a reservation a week prior, and was very happy, because we walked into a full restaurant. They have a few secluded booths that look very intimate, unlucky for us, they were all occupied. Japanese eating for me is a miso soup, green salad, and maki, that is what i love and crave. Typically a green salad would cost as low as $ 1.50 to about $ 3, at Matsu it was $ 4. As good as it was, it was standard, i didnt think that it warranted its price tag. Our rolls arrived, and mine was the dragon, with shrimp tempura, and either crab or salmon on top. It tasted fresh, and clean, and was so satisfying. As good as the food was the service really wasn’t up to par. We did go on a busy night, but it took 2 hours for our meal and this didn’t include drinks or dessert. What i payed for the maki in peterborugh, is the same price that i would pay for a maki roll, soup, and sald in Guelph. Overall, the food was delicious, I think it was just an off night for our server, and i look forward to returning.

We ordered the Whistler roll and Kawartha roll. The portions were huge. The presentation was impeccable. The service was amazing. And prices were great. Coming from Toronto, I didn’t know what to expect, but this place blew me away. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Peterborough.

We are used to wonderful Toronto sushi but I have to say that Matsu is on the same level. Very fresh fish and lovely service. One thing Matsu has is one of the best greetings and partings you will ever experience. Upon entering the owner will greet you in a very loud sing song that is quite genuine. If it isn’t too busy, I respond with a little jig and some vigorous waving. I’ve brought people from Toronto to Matsu and I explain that it’s just the friendly Peterborough way. Matsu sushi is the best sushi because you start and end with a BIGSMILE :)

Matsu Sushi is my favourite sushi place anywhere! It’s only too bad that it’s close to a 2 hour drive from home :( My sweetheart and I stumbled upon it by chance when taking a summer drive to Peterborough. When looking for somewhere to eat, we consulted our handy-dandy Unilocal iPhone app and found rave reviews for Matsu. I highly, highly recommend the riceless rolls! There’s one roll that’s loaded full of raw spicy scallop, tuna and salmon… Without the rice the flavours and textures of the spicy fish come through like you wouldn’t believe. It’s truly like a spicy raw fish heaven in your mouth. The riceless rolls themselves are difficult to find at other sushi places. Even in sushi dense cities like Toronto, you’ll be lucky if you find a role like this one. If you do… Let me know where you found it! Décor wise, Matsu offers several curtained secluded booths, which is nice if you’re looking for a private meal. The service staff is very friendly, and your food comes out rather quickly. If you’re ever in the Peterborough area I suggest going to Matsu Sushi. If you really love sushi, I highly recommend a road trip to Peterborough!
