Been here for lunch and dinner within 2 days, both time are not very busy, I can get a table right away. Food was good as usual, satay always my favorite, malay bread as well. Ox’s tail in pot were tasty and good to serve with ginger rice. Soft shell crab were not too bad, green curry just taste okay, BBQ pork back neck was excellent. But Hainan chicken were not taste very good, taste like storing in freezer for long time. Server served us okay, but their captain server and manager need more smile on their face. Overall, Tropika still a good place to eat yet imo.

If you want really delicious food from Tropika DONOT visit the Richmond location. Everything is based in an oil sauce instead of what it is actually supposed to be in. My rendang beef was not cooked properly and it was super rubbery when it’s supposed to be very tender. I have ordered the exact same dish from the Cambie location and it was superb NOT oily or based in an oil sauce. Go to Vancouver.

Always a great go to place for something different. The location at Cambie gets pretty packed and it’s a bit smaller. The Lansdowne location has lots of room, the wait line is shorter, and there is more free parking available. I can never resist the roti canai(malay bread) or the chicken satays to start. I then had the Daulat Tuanku special and it came with home style fried chicken, samba prawns, and kari lembu. It included a bowl or rice too. Definitely a deal. Be prepared though, the service is just not friendly and has attitude. Good thing the food is tasty.

Terrible customer service! The server was a bald man in a blue shirt who made snippy comments and was unforgivably rude while we were ordering! He was very blunt about the spiciness of the food and not accommodating. When ordering the tropical fruit juice, he said, «WHICHONE?» Like I was an idiot for not knowing that the menu did not mean all fruit juices listed mixed together. He was very short like we were wasting his time. Didn’t even get to eat the food because we were so pissed. Do not give this restaurant your time of day, the food has been alright in the past. But it was the shiny bald s****head’s attitude that I could not stand.

Wow. The food here last time was decent(we had the satay and one of the combo items) so after a movie we decided to pay them another visit. After being seated, we were greeted with perhaps the rudest server I had the displeasure of encountering. He rudely dismissed our questions, and contradicted the menu. When I pointed out to him our confusion, he sighed and tried to explain that some of the items couldn’t be prepared mild unless they had the green pepper. We understood, our item had the green pepper next to it. That wasn’t good enough for this server. We chose a drink, he interrupted us to tell us we had to choose a flavor and then jabbed his finger down at the menu telling us to choose another drink. Unbelievable. Not even five minutes after sitting, we decided to leave. Won’t be coming back. I don’t expect much from my servers, but I won’t tolerate being continually insulted while giving my business.

Great place with pretty good food and a good location. I come here quite often with friends and family and we like to order big, and they’re always up to the challenge. Their service is pretty good but not the friendliest.(To be honest, I usually just ignore the snarkiness. As long as I get the food, I’m happy) Their curries are delicious, their fried rices and specialty rices know just how to hit the spot, and their roti is to die for. I’ll most likely come by this place every once in a while when I’m in the area just to get their roti. Literally one of my favourite things in the world. Would recommend, just be wary of their menu. I haven’t tried it all, and I don’t like it all, but for the most part, it’s great.

I can’t remember all the names we ordered but I’ll try to describe it as clearly as I can: Hainan chicken String beans(spicy) Chicken/beef on stick Beef curry (Flat bread) not sure what it is but comes with curry sauce Coconut rice Hainan rice Some of these dish was served cold and the curry was watery. There’s wasn’t anything I enjoyed, probably the rice. I was a bit annoyed with the server who keeps filling my water even though it was still full. After we complained how unsatisfied we were, there was not any action on their behalf, not even an apology. It was just«we will inform the chef». Thumbs down.

I have never seen a server with such an irritating attitude. We just asked if the thick noodle can be substituted to flat noodle for a dish n he got all annoyed. With his eyes rolling up and a real beetchy tone, he said«can’t you see it’a Set Menu?» His attitude is humiliating and made my mom and I felt that we asked a Stupid Question. Well done on putting others down. But no worry, we still tipped you, the Shiny bald guy. Do NOT recommend at all. Go there only if u want to be humiliated ;)

Decent service, and nice decors however the food really let down of the whole restaurant experience. Everything seems to be very greasy!!! And personally I feel everything is so premade… Not fresh at all; perhaps there is a line up in front of the microwave because everything is lukewarm… Or even a bit cold. The lamb curry is soaked in oil. There is a thick layer of red oil floating that is hard to ignore. It wasn’t even heated up enough that we had to send it back. The pork satay is seasoned well and quite delicious, probably the best tasting thing on the table. If you are debating with the pineapple rice or coconut rice, get the pineapple rice please! Because we regret so much after seeing the coconut rice. There is an awkward smell to it that doesn’t scream coconut at all. I think the cambie one is the only good one that has good service and fresh food!

The quality has dropped significantly since it moved from Aberdeen to Landsdowne. You can tell from the food the chefs are not experienced or well trained. The pad Thai was watery and bland and the chicken was bone dry. Coupled with the high prices, it feels like a rip off. From my experience, the food at the tropica on Cambie always tastes the best.

Tropika is consistently delicious and the service is good. Their Aberdeen location has plenty of parking and is by far my favorite of them all! Try their beef rendang, satays, roti, and pineapple rice!

I’ve been to every Tropika location, Richmond has the most decent service out of all of them. Can’t go wrong with Malaysian food though, it’s spicy but not burning spicy. It’s not as greasy and salty as other asian food. I give this a 3 star for it’s price. Everything on the menu is good, but they’re all a bit pricey. Favourite dishes: Roti Canai, Sambal Kang-Kong, Keri Lembu and Pineapple Fried Rice. Not so favourite: their Satays(chicken and Beef) they were hard and dry.

Those lunch specials are insane! for just a bit over $ 9, ordered the lamb curry, well marinated with about 4 good-size chunks, huge rice with a side order of salad and those crispy won ton pieces!

Tropika is a favorite weekday lunch spot conveniently located in Lansdowne mall. It’s exceptionally tasty and have reasonably priced lunch specials.
My current favorite is the chicken curry — flavorful and not overly spicy. It’s accompanied by a bowl of white(or coconut) rice and a salad. For a mere $ 9 it is an absolute steal(remember, this is a lunch special). If I’m famished, I usually throw down a Roti Canai or a few skewers as well. If I’m in need of a carb injection, the pineapple or coconut fried rice dishes off the regular menu is always a solid choice. Note that these dishes are served in a REAL pineapple and coconut respectively. Definitely an «A» for style! These are a bit larger than the lunch special which justifies the $ 14 price tag. The dining room itself is also quite new and modern. It feels massive inside with high(20ft) ceilings, large windows, and an abundance of mirrors. The booths are a little uncomfy — there’s minimal legroom and the backrests are essentially a vertical wall with minimal cushioning. Nothing experience-ruining however. You can always sit at a table. The one thing that bugs me is that there is no direct door into the mall despite being in it — you have to go around the outside. There’s a giant window looking into the mall so people can gawk at you eat if you happen to be on that side.
Service is usually solid. Orders are processed in a timely manner and you never have to ask for water refills. I wouldn’t come here for the service alone but it gets the job done. Tropika provides an excellent meal for the price. I do have a bit of a soft spot for Malaysian food(which is scarce in this city compared to Japanese or Italian places) but of the many times I’ve been, they’ve never disappointed.

Tropika closed down their Aberdeen location and opened up at Landsdowne! The menu and décor is pretty much the same, even the service quality remains the same. except maybe they hired more teenagers now. I’ve always loved the Gado Gado which is a type of salad tossed in peanut sauce with some tofu and egg mixed in. Delicious! Roti bread also goes very well with this salad. I personally don’t use the sauce that comes with the roti but prefer the peanut sauce. The skewers can be a hit or miss, but chicken is usually a safe bet. The beef satay, however, is always on the tough/dry side. Pineapple fries rice is also a good choice — I wonder if they reuse the pineapple shell. There’s a good variety of ethnic desserts, the ones I’ve tried were too sweet for my preference but nonetheless unique. If you love coconut milk, you’d be a happy camper here! I always feel like I had a hearty meal after dining here and suffer from extreme itis so that must be a good thing! I love Malaysian food and will continue to come back here when I get the cravings!

I’m glad Tropika moved out of Aberdeen and in to Lansdowne. Tropika is now more accessible. Parking is definitely better at this new location. Trying to get a table for four isn’t that bad, especially lunchtime on a Saturday. The place is quite big. We love the booth seating. It’s nice and cozy and somewhat private. We got seated quickly, despite the place being very busy. The service is quite good, I must say. The servers were very attentive. I did notice one thing, all of the servers were male. Hmmm… what’s up with that? The Pad Thai, was pretty good. Quite tasty. The Roti Canai(Malay Bread) was a hit with the kids. They loved it so much, I was left with crumbs right after I took a photo of it. The dipping sauce is very spicy so I wouldn’t suggest offering that to any kid. Unless, you’re planning on curing a foulmouthed kid. Give it a few seconds. The heat progresses, and tears will eventually come out. The Kari Kambing(Curry Lamb) is good. The curry had just enough heat. The lamb could be a little bit more tender. And, I was expecting a bit more flavour from the Hainanese rice I chose to go with this dish. The Coconut Seafood Fried Rice is good. Very subtle coconut flavour, not a lot of seafood other than chopped up bits of shrimp and squid. Definitely not worth the price tag for what we got. Overall experience is quite good. They have a lunch menu that offer a few dishes for about $ 10. A great option when one craves Malaysian food without breaking the bank.

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here. Since I’m a fan of Thai and Malaysian food I thought I’d check out this new place that opened in Lansdowne. It was a lot classier and more upscale than I thought it would be and to my dismay the prices matched the fancy décor. We ordered the BAKKUTTEHSOUP which was spicy and flavorful but left my throat burning for quite some time afterwards. We also got the HOTANDSOUREGGPLANTHOTPOTWITHMINCEDPORK(which was absolutely delicious), MALAYCURRYFISHHEADHOTPOT(extremely spicy but fantastic if you’re not grossed out by fish heads) and last but not least, the COCONUTSEAFOODFRIEDRICE. The coconut seafood fried rice was the dish I was most excited about and as unique as the presentation was(it was served inside a hollow coconut), it lacked any coconut-y flavor and resembled just plain white rice. The check came to $ 60 for these 4 dishes and while all of them were delicious and filling I can’t force myself to say that $ 60 was a good deal. All in all I’d definitely check this place out if you’re looking for something outside of the typical Richmond Chinese restaurants but don’t expect to get huge family sized portions or even chopsticks!

Wow! We(5 of us) came here on second day after its grand opening. According to the menu, this is the 3rd store of Tropika group: one on Robson, one on Cambie & now Lansdowne in Richmond(used to be in Aberdeen Centre) Since it is newly open in this location, I really don’t have a much to criticize; the ambience, decoration, service, menu, food taste & settings all good, ample free parkings. Except that the price is hmmmmm… That’s the reason I took away one star.
