Recently became a member at the beginning of May. Moving back and forth from Toronto to Chicago, I was looking for a guys club just to relax and to feel great when I left. Enter John Allan’s. From the time I walked in I was greeted warmly, jacket was taken and I was offered a drink. Their house ale isn’t too bad, reminds me of a Keith’s pale ale. I pretty much already made up my mind to buy a membership the minute I walked in. The full service which includes scalp massage, shampoo, conditioner, hot towel, haircut, manicure and shoe shine along with a beverage of choice is $ 72 a la carte. The membership cost has gone up to $ 850 which is steep if I must say so myself, however since my hair grows like a weed, I get it cut every 2.5−3 weeks so it actually works out quite well. My stylist was Karen and she is awesome with the shears, highly recommended. It’s definitely one of the smaller clubs, Chicago is much larger. That being said, it is very cozy and the service is impecable. Honestly, yes it’s pricey but the feeling you get when you leave with great looking hair and buffed shoes after a arduous day at the office, is unbeatable.

John Allans. Ive read about it a couple times and finally decided to visit. Having a barbershop with a membership is fantastic! My first visit, I call to schedule an appointment(probably a good idea to make appointments every time), I walk in a someone takes my jacket and bag and I start with a beverage of choice while getting my shoes shined. Then I escorted to get my hair washed. Nicki greeted me by name and started a warm rinse followed by a scalp massage, shampoo and rinse. Then I move to another chair and have a hot towel wrapped around my face while laying back and getting a light massage. Upon heading over to get my hair cut in a large comfy chair, I am again greeted by name and there is a new beverage awaiting me beside the chair. Again greeted name. My hair is promptly cut with scissors… not just a buzzer. Then another lady comes along and does my nails. After another rinse to clean out the cut hair, I have some product put in my hair and then I am finished. Takes about 40 mins, considering it wasn’t that busy. Someone hands me my jacket and bag and Im ready to go. Most professional service I have ever seen for a hair cut. Membership includes unlimited access… I was told some people stop by every day for a latte and shoe shine, or come in twice a week for a hair wash. First time guests get the complete package(what I had) for about $ 40. Full price for continuing guests is $ 68. Honestly, pay the $ 750 for the unlimited annual membership and go frequently. I work close by so for me I will be dropping by to get my latte and shoe shine nearly daily. I could easily top it off with a drink after work. They also have many member exclusive events every month. Enter by escalator to the Bay on Queen and Bay st… takes you right too it. Great service. Attractive women working. It gets you relaxed in a fresh mindset. Seems expensive for a hair cut membership but consider how often you buy a latte, frappiccino, americano, etc, how many beers you have after work, how much you spend a year on shaving products and shampoo and hair cuts and shoe shinning. Why not get the membership? Honestly, I can go on and on… but you won’t believe me until you try it for yourself.

What took so long for John Allan’s to come to Toronto? How did we men survive without John Allan’s? For those not familiar — John Allan’s is a men’s grooming club originating in New York city. The«Full Service» includes scalp massage, shampoo, conditioner, hot towel, haircut, manicure and shoe shine along with a beverage of choice(coffee, espresso, water, beer [Toronto location is waiting for liquor license]). At John Allan’s you can either pay per visit or get an annual membership which allows you to visit as many times as you like throughout the year. Depending how often you like a haircut, manicure, shoe shine, scalp massage the annual membership can make a lot of sense for the well-groomed male. The atmosphere of the Toronto is comfortable and masculine with big club chairs — this is some place you’d want to escape to during a busy day at the office or before a big night out. The service is impeccable: from start to finish you really are taken care of by the staff. An hour later you’re done — you leave with hot hair, nice looking hands, buffed shoes and feeling totally relaxed. Kudos to John Allan’s Toronto — the concept is great, the service is fantastic and I think I’m a convert for life. When you go — tell them RJ sent you. PS — note that John Allan’s is located inside the downtown HBC at Queen & Young(2nd floor, near the Hugo Boss boutique — far West side).
