Had a short trip to be and as a group we headed out hear for lunch. The recommendation went like this«you can not tell my wife we went her without her”. In the end we enjoyed the biggest ben to box I had to date for $ 16. It is on my list to go back to when I make it out again.

Ordered two party trays for a company lunch and I have to say — very impressed with the outcome! They had our order ready in less than a half an hour(I called at noon and promptly at 12:30 it was freshly waiting for me just as promised.) We ordered one tray with sashimi, another with various rolls, some veggie tempura and mixed vegetarian rolls to feed a group of seven. Everyone at work was happy and stuffed — we even had leftovers! For $ 70 it was quite a nice lunch.

Outrageous service here!!! I went with a party of four at 2:40, 20 minutes before their posted 3:00 closing time. The host said he could not seat us because they were closing(even though it wasn’t 3:00) and proceeded to seat another customer immediately after he said no to us. The other customer claimed he eats really fast and that seemed to be good enough reason to seat him. When I brought this up to the host, he could not adequately explain his actions because it was outright discrimination! Talk about inconsistent way to treat your customers! I will be telling this horrible experience to everyone I know and even though I was a regular customer, I will no longer go there.

I’d say this is more like a 3.5 than a 3 Cozy Japanese restaurant tucked beside a Starbucks and a couple other smaller shops. Ordered a couple rolls, some toro sashimi, and vegetable tempura. Service was come and go, sometimes they were there refilling tea once I had finished, and other times I had to call them over. The rolls were meh, not that well rolled and kinda ugly looking. Nothing special. The tempura was pretty tasty I found, sucks that previous reviewers complained about the oil. Toro sashimi was tasty, probably saved this meal for me.

Ok food. The rolls were a bit off because the oil used in the deep fried rolls had a strange taste to it. The rice was hard, dry and somewhat cold… not very good combined with that weird oil taste we didn’t enjoy the rolls. Had a teriyaki beef don bowl. Large portions and the beef wasn’t dry and lots of sauce. What real put me off, besides the funky looking stuff that was growing in the wooden serving ware, was the communication between the wait staff and kitchen. We got the bill before ½ our orders came out which should explain why our rolls were cold. Friend ordered a nigiri sushi combo that looks very appetizing, other than that moldy stuff on the tray, the sushi looks very good and presented well. Bottom line: stick to the fresh Nigiri /Sashimi I think their deep dryer needs an oil change.

Arrived here at a fairly relax time on a Thursday night. The mood was chill and quiet. We were greeted by a female server and asked to wait as she cleared a table. Five minutes later we were seated. We look over the menu. Nothing really stands out. Rolls, sushi and donburi. They have chef specials posted at the door and by the bar. I ordered the Black Dragon roll, spider roll and the special: Salmon tar tar. Food is nothing special. The tar tar arrived first. It was a towering pile of avocado, purred salmon, fried onions drizzled with a mayo based sauce sitting in a puddle of soy sauce. Finishing the tar tar, I quietly waited for my rolls. Service seemed slow as the servers were more focus on take out orders and the sushi chefs had their assignments. There are two chefs: one to make the basic sushi — nigri rolls etc and the head guy to make the chef specials. He disappeared for 25 minutes causing a backlog of food — therefore our order was slow. Our bill arrived before our rolls did. A mistake on their part. We notified the server and she looked confused. Five minutes later our rolls arrived. They were okay. My spider roll soaked up all the bad oil and the black roll was sauced up. We finished and our bill arrived back to our table. We paid and departed with no goodbye.

Our go-to neighbourhood Japanese restaurant, which we frequent at least once a month. Good service, fresh tasty food. Favourites include the corn cream croquette and the double fantasy battera pressed sushi.

Applause is my home away from home. I rarely get to come back to Vancouver but whenever I do, they’re my first stop. From the warm and friendly staff, to their yummy oyster motoyakis, I’m always a fan :) Their chirashi don is an amazing deal for all the fish you get and is one of the cheaper chirashi dons I’ve had in the city. Overall, one of my favourite sushi restaurants and I can’t wait to come back in August!

I’m sadly disappointed. It seems like they have recently changed the chef or something. Servers look the same to me but the food quality has declined. The bulky(non-classy) sizes resemble food from Samarai sushi and the sockeye salmon sashimi still had some brown edges on them-they are also very very chewy(I think the chef sliced it wrong and left the hard tissues attached). Sigh.

My husband and I just moved to the area and we have high standards for our sushi requirements. We’re so pleased to have discovered this excellent sushi bar only a few blocks from our house. The quality is excellent, flavours are well done and the service is very good. Every time we orders is always so well done. We will definitely be going back there every week for our sushi fix!

If you don’t wish to wait at this place, I would recommend booking in advance. The food served up here are quite remarkable. I ordered the set dinner box which although comes out to $ 22 with tax and tips, it was well worth it both in size and taste. Comes with miso soup, salad and ice cream. Sashimi is fresh, sizeable and flavourful. It comes with a side of Gomae which is one of my favourite. Be aware if you don’t eat peanuts products. Tempura is also plentiful and done just right. Services are prompt and friendly.

We went there not realizing that we could have reserved a table. Apparently the only table they had left was right in front of the door which was constantly being opened(super chilly seeing how it was December). Fair enough we came unprepared. But the best part was when they asked us(table of 3) to move to the bench so that a table of 4 could sit down. Not wanting to be a bozo, we move and order. Food is decent quality. Mediocre service. Nothing spectacular. However we did order a California role with real crab and by then end of our meal it still hasn’t arrived. Upon inquiring, We were informed that they ran out of real crab. Ok… Were they hoping we would forget? Not sure if I’ll be going back but I feel like there’s potential.

I went to this place for lunch with my Dad. It was a cozy restaurant and we went straight to the sushi bar. on that day, I order the Salmon maki sushi combo and a few orders of sashimi. Overall, the dishes tasted great, fresh and well presented to us. I was impressed with the dishes compared to the cost of the dishes. Also, it was a different experience from other restaurants(especially in downtown), which brought me back to the traditional Japanese restaurant atmosphere. I will go back again to try their dinner menu.

Great service and nice atmosphere. This place is always pretty busy but everyone there still manages to be very polite and courteous the whole way through. Haven’t ever had a bad experience here. I mostly come here pretty often for their chicken teriyaki don and sashimi which are pretty good. They do take out too, so that’s cool.

I drove by Applause Japanese all the time and saw they’re quite busy during dinner time. But, never have any intention to put it on my must try list! On super hot Friday night and didn’t feel like to cook, therefore, just went out for causal dinner. We walked in to Applause, we got seated at the bar. The service was good. California roll — It’s real crab meat for California roll. Nothing to praise anyways. Hamachi Kama — It’s well-seasoned and tasty. Ungai don — Big piece of eel with sweet sauce, just made it perfect. Ika, Hamachi, red tuna sashimi — They’re fresh but nothing to wow about. We seated at sushi bar and watched 2 chefs making all the sushi and dishes. We realized they used a lot of pre-packaged fish fillet for sashimi and sushi. Plus, they speak Mandarin too!

I like to get there before 7pm because it gets busy. We like to sit at the sushi bar and watch as the chefs make the sushi. Love the mentaiko udon and the grilled squid. The specials they have are also interesting and yummy.

After finishing off at the Richmond Driving Range 2 friends and I decided to grab some dinner on a Saturday night. It was about 8 pm so a bit late. We ended up at Applause Japanese Restaurant. I use to live in this area and I’ve ordered take out from this place before. I rarely had to occasion to dine in. Overall, the restaurant is ok la… It has a homey feel to it, because of the causal surroundings and the home made curtains enclosing the booths. I ordered their seaweed salad, chicken karaage, and I shared the assorted sashimi platter. All the dishes were delish! I especially liked the assorted sashimi dish. This dish included exquisite pieces of choice raw seafood… wild salmon, tuna, clam sashimi, octopus… and a couple of fish that I’m not sure what they are. Anyways, it was all good! Ok tell me if you think this is strange. After the bill was settled the waitress picked up our payment from the tray and we told her to keep the change and thanked her. About a minute later she came back and said we over paid! We gave her about $ 80 on a $ 70 bill! We were a bit puzzled but in the end my friend took $ 3 back(and we all shared a lottery ticket with it)! Wow! Maybe she was expecting all chinese people are bad tippers! Haha

[Going Gaga for Applause] This quaint little Japanese restaurant tucked in a discreet little commercial complex in a residential neighborhood. I was introduced to it by a friend and been here many times since. My usual order is the dinner box(yes, the most unoriginal name). It consists of 3 types of sashimi, 3 pieces of nigiri, unagi don, 6 pieces of tempura, salad, miso, and ice cream. For $ 20, the price isn’t stellar but for the quality and freshness, it’s worth every penny. The unagi don isn’t super salty, the tempura is lightly battered, and the fish is fresh and tender. I’ve also had the Nabeyaki udon which is also excellent — broth isn’t too salty and the udon doesn’t taste like it was store-bought. Many of the specialty rolls are worth trying as well. The service is great as well. While I’m fairly certain the Kitchen staff is chinese, they have made an effort to hire Japanese wait staff to make the experience a little more authentic. Servers are always quick to refill drinks, take orders, and always super helpful. The restaurant itself isn’t that big and has more of a homestyle feel to it. It reminds me of what restaurants are like in smaller cities of Japan. It often gets busy on weekends around dinnertime to be sure to call ahead. Do yourself a favor and pay this place a visit.

Finally went in after months and months of walking past this place… and oh my goodness, I was so happy to eat at this place! I had lunch here, and the lunch menu was great. The Bento Box B made my tummy burp with happiness, and the sashimi cuts were great on the nigiris. The Beef Terikyaki wasn’t too sweet, but not too plain either. It was the way I usually like it. The salad dressing was very unique, so extra bonus points there. And the Katsu Don that my boyfriend took for dinner received a wonderful feedback, so I was happy to pay the amount. The atmosphere was very nice. It’s very cozy. I wish we could’ve gotten some Daily Special Dishes, but perhaps next time we come back! :)
