The hubby and I were in Vancouver for the weekend and we took the bus over to Granville Island and had so much fun. Walking through the market is almost overwhelming with the yummy looking food choices. So many items looked good at Laurelle’s so we tried a few things. –Sausage roll — yummy –Chocolate Hazelnut Rugelach — AMAZING –Mini Mincedmeat Pie — for the hubby — he said it was tasty Will be back next time we get to Granville Island.

Laurelle’s Fine Foods has a beautiful display at the Granville Island Public Market. We circled back a few times before deciding on a MEATSHEPHERDSPIE and a 5″ CHICKENPOTPIE. They can heat them up for you if you want to eat there but it’s in a microwave. The pies didn’t come out very hot either so we had them try a couple of times. I’m sure the pies would’ve been better piping hot, but being only lukewarm they were just ok. Of the two, I preferred the chicken pot pie but it wasn’t anywhere near the best I’ve had.

OMG! Okay this is one of my favorite places to eat in the market down on Graville Island. You can buy take away some baking stuff and the chicken to eat… enough said. I think I want to marry this chicken. Customer service was awesome. The baked goods will make you go into a happy sugar coma.

We walked through the whole Granville Market before deciding on where to make our purchases and liked the look of Laurelle’s. As you can see from my photo, we picked a few items to taste and of those our favorite was the apple crumble. Too bad it’s a seasonal item. Get it while you can!

After reading a few reviews mentioning that they don’t take credit cards, I figured I should provide and updated confirmation that they do indeed take credit cards as of the time I wrote this. In fact, I billed an oh-so delectable pasta penne salad for $ 2 on my credit card. I felt bad for doing this to them, as they were probably within their rights to require a minimum order for credit card purchases. Been there two times, both for lunch-salads billed by the 100/grams weight. Pasta salad was great; pad thai, not so much but still passable. Their selection is great and tastes pretty good, but appear to be on the high-end of the one-$-sign price spectrum. I’d consider them a good choice for picnic-fare, but not knockout-destination-worth-traveling-for-just-to-taste.

Wanted something sweet and bumped into this place! I got the lemon bar, pecan tart, coconut macaroon and pecan caramel bar. My favorite are the lemon bar and pecan caramel bar, I thought they would be room temperature since they were in the display case but they were icy cold! I assume they’ve probably been in a fridge? I’m not sure but took them them home to heat up!

Chicken basil did the trick. Tofu strips were good. Meat mousaka was also good. Recommended. Wish it would take credit cards.

I picked up a medium sized container of Curry Tortellini Salad and Wild Rice Salad along with a couple of Sausage rolls in flaky pastry. Curry Tortellini is to die for! Creamy, yummy, sweet with some crunch from the fruit and veggies inside. As for the Wild Rice, I didn’t care for so much. It was a bit bland and ended up mixing it with the curry salad to make it more palatable. The girls behind the counter were very helpful. Only thing I would change is their NOCREDITCARD policy. I went to all the neighboring vendors and everyone else accepted it. This set me back a bit as I had to hunt an ATM down before I could buy my goodies. That takes my 5* rating down to a 4*. Check out my pics.

Cappuccino Nanaimo Bar($ 2.10) — White Chocolate, Coffee, Hazelnuts, Butter. Chocolatey Yumminess Dessert named Nanaimo that as a Tourist from the East, I though I should give in and indulge as one of the BC Food items outside of the famous Vancouver Crab. Although I wasn’t getting any Coffee scent, it was still delicious and perfectly sweetened, melt in your mouth Chocolate Dessert. For that price, I should have gotten their regular Nanaimo Bar(Belgium Chocolate, Butter, Custard) as well! 3.5 *Stars* Laurelle’s sells various other Pastries, Desserts and cold Salad items that seemed more popular as it was relatively close to the Food Court seating. They can distribute these Desserts to other Cafes and those Cafes can easily charge $ 3.00+ for them.

After 6 months of working on Granville Island and trying everything on that dam island. this has become my favourite spot. Fresh tasty salads. pick one you won’t be disappointed. There mac & cheese and lasagna’s hit the italian spot. and a there tasty seasonal cookies are the best. The seem to have something for everyone. The really are the best on an Island of touristy mediocrity.

As much as I’d love to give it 5 stars I can only give it 4 for the sole reason that it’s sooo far away(I’m from San Jose, CA). But dammit, if I could I’d come here frequently. Their service people are very friendly and all smiles which I love, and the selection and quality of their food is great. I wanted to look at all the food all day long. For anyone wanting a nice light snack definitely go for the scones. They are so light, fluffy, and all around delicious. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Oh! And their dessert options looked so good. I got a mini-cupcake and practically melted at the texture and taste of the buttercream frosting. It worked so well with the subtle sweetness of the cupcake that it was so hard not to go back and buy another one.

I’ve gotta say it, this IS fine food! I’ve never had something I didn’t like from here. The cook has good taste ;-) Just watch out for that«per 100gr» thing. Get’s ya every time. Two delicious pieces of chicken, smallish, breasts… Close to 6 bux. Good customer service, patient and nice. Take your yummies outside to eat and enjoy the lovely view.

There are a whole lot of food options to choose from on Granville Island. After passing by Laurelle’s, what seemed like 3 or 4 times, I took the plunge and ordered the moussaka which was served in a microwaveable type of tray. Having never had this dish before, I did not know what to expect. Fortunately, it was very pleasant with a good mix of peppers, eggplant and beef. Seeing that the items that Laurelle’s sells are all prepared for purchase already, the moussaka was somewhat less enjoyable having been microwaved. But it was a nice option to have while sitting outside in the sun watching the going ons of False Creek. I would recommend Laurelle’s for its variety of entrees, pasta and baked goods that they serve. They would make for a good meal for a casual day on Granville.
