Good neighbourhood restaurant that we always find ourselves going back. Nothing fancy but pretty solid. Get the Golden Dragon roll.

Likes: Consistently well prepared food. Great sushi! Brown rice option. Palm Tree sushi roll. Good portions. Clean dining area. Lots of natural light. Fast and friendly service. Dislikes: There used to be window seating but they removed it to make room for another table, was my favorite place to sit when by myself. Plastic cups. Despite prompt and friendly service, the table service is not very attentive to beverage refills, and they don’t ask if you want anything else before bringing you the bill.

Went here for last minute lunch with my family. Small restaurant. Very family friendly. Gave my daughters water in a plastic cup with a straw. Even cut the sushi into smaller pieces. Great service and food was great! Parking in front is only a dollar an hour.

Just moved into the area and decided to try some takeout. In Vancouver, it’s tough to find bad sushi… But this did us in. As someone who tries to eat whole grain, healthy foods as a rule, I can honestly say I’d choose MacDonald’s before Tokyo John’s. I wouldn’t eat here again even if it was free.

This area on Cambie is now full of restaurants and bars so it’s not always easy to make a choice to eat when you have no preference and an empty stomach. This predicament was the reason my girlfriend and I tried this spot. I’ve always driven past and noticed the sign in the past but never had a reason to stop and try it until recently. They have daily specials and decent combos but the price point doesn’t really fit the quality or the whole feel of this restaurant. Decent sushi but really overpriced chef creations. It feels and tastes more like a cheap budget restaurant but the end bill didn’t make us feel that way. I wouldn’t visit them again unless I was in the area and really hungry without a preference once again… but even then I’d probably go somewhere else. The only thing I could suggest trying is the Canuck’s combo because it’s a decent deal: Dynamite Roll 6pcs, Yam Roll 6pcs, Chicken Karage 4pcs($ 10) Other than that the rest came off as very mediocre and boring.

Open at 2pm to 5pm when most others are napping. So that’s my main stoke for this place. It’s good. Agadashi could be lighter.

I come here at least twice a week. Great sushi for cheap compared to other places that lack on quality for the same price. Best sushi ever. No negative aspects.

It’s true about other Unilocalers; is a bit surprising this is the only sushi place in this Cambie area, the other two, Hiro, are a good 2 blocks away, and much more authentic. Walked in a few months ago to look at their takeout menu, and worker there exactly wasn’t the fuzziest person if you know what i mean lol. Well, if you’re not picky, but this is an easy pass.

If you are looking to get sushi in this area, definitely skip this place. Shiro, down the street is leaps and bounds better than this place in every way; service, promptness, and most importantly, food! It’s just not as fresh, nor as inviting here. I live right in this area and I’d still rather wait a few extra minutes for a spot at Shiro!

My friend just wanted to grab some Japanese food. The service was slow and not friendly. The portions are small and the chef is into decorating all of his dishes with brown and black sesame seeds. The waitress was quick to take away our plates without asking and literally once the last sushi was in my mouth the bill was at my side. I don’t recommend this place.

bento and rolls alright to good. except BC rolls, menu said BBQ salmon, but no BBQ skin just somewhat steamed salmon meat. Bit pricey overall. sushi rice a total lack of usual texture.

Despite all the other«not so great» reviews, I’ve only had good experiences here, most of which is take-out. Love the price and food is good. I usually don’t repeatedly go eat at one place all the time but I make an exception here. See you guys soon, Thanks

The sushi here is good; however, the whole experience of eating here can be quite frustrating. About half of their business seems to be take-out, so if you wander in on a Friday or Saturday evening and sit at a table, you will be waiting a looooong time to get a) a menu, b) your order taken, c) your food brought to the table and d) your bill(have exact change or you’ll be wating for this too). Their priority definitely seems to be handling the take-out orders! My advice– go for lunch or go for take-out.

I am not the best person to judge sushi as I don’t eat fish! However I do love the veggie japanese foods and love to stuff as much wasabi as I can in my face. I am always on the hunt for places that do good veggie sushi — Tokyo Johns; has one of the larger veggie menus and their food is always fresh and fast. I always have the veggie combo — great tempura and avo rolls. I also really like their miso soup — although its just with tofu, it would be nice if they had some seaweed in there as well. Their Veggie Bento box is nice as well — good teriyaki tofu and tempura. I am a regular so I guess i get quick and fresh service — did I mention they are also very reasonable? $ 10 for combo plus soup and a drink… Great lunch spot!

Can one ever get tired of Japanese? Likely not. When I can’t decide what the heck I want to eat, I end up eating sushi. It’s a safe bet. Cheap, somewhat healthy, and good. There are very few Japanese places I wouldn’t go back to. Living in the area, I’ve passed this place countless times. It’s name kind of turned me off. I assumed it meant it was owned by a white guy named John(not true). We each ordered the lunch special bento box for $ 7.95. Miso, chicken or beef teriyaki, tempura, salad and california roll. I got chicken. Order took a bit longer than I’m used to(thanks to robot-efficient Chinese-owned joints) for not being busy, but I guess it was a sign of freshness. Tempura batter was nice and light with a tad bit of sweetness. All our components were alright. Standard bento fare. Japanese saves a hungry stomach.

If you need to drop in for a quick bite this is definitely the place to go on Cambie! I wouldn’t go out of my way to get here, however I do drop by every week or so during my shift just to grab some sushi. Very friends waitresses and chef, sushi is pretty good but sometimes not as fresh as it could be! I go to this one mainly because of the service that I receive everytime I go in there, love it when I am remembered by staff at a store!

Dear Mr. John, How come I never get miso soup with my takeout combo? I’m saving you the cleanup by not messing up one of the tables in your restaurant by getting my order to go. What’s with the hate? Love, E.

Cheap sushi that’s… decent, apparently decent fish selection, far better service than I expected for a cheap place… and the lunch special bento box is quite good. The beef teriyaki is some weird thin beef bits with sauce dumped on top. Really not that attractive, even if the rest of the meal isn’t bad at all. Miso soup is a bit too salty. If I was comparing this by my usual standards, it might get a star and a half… but factor in unexpectedly good service and the fact that the price was very reasonable, I can give them three stars. I mean, it’s almost an adorable little place for a decidedly average low-end sushi joint, and that has a charm all its own.

Tokyo John has cheap sushi, good food, plenty of free parking and decent service. I went here last night, and we ordered a ton of food. The six piece rolls were only about $ 4 each(I had the Vancouver roll and the Philadelphia roll) and I had inari, which was about $ 1. The miso soup was also pretty tasty, though it was lacking on the tofu and green onion a bit, but I liked that it didn’t have any seaweed in it. I really liked the tea too — it was strong and I probably drank a whole pot by myself, but the waitress did seem to tire out on the refills.
