Stopped here for lunch on a lovely Saturday. The restaurant was mostly empty. We were made to wait 20 minutes from the time we sat down until our order was taken. 45 minutes to an hour later we are told that it would be an additional 15 to get our food. Meanwhile, two separate tables up and left before their orders were taken, due to a complete lack of service. We decided to leave as well. This was truly horrible and frustrating service, which when confronted was met with a defensive attitude from the woman working. Plenty of great spots to eat in Wakefield, this apparently is not one of them.

Great inexpensive breakfast. Obviously a local favorite. Must try the homemade wheat bread. They call it brown bread in Canada.

Dinner at the Alpengruss is a little more idiosynchratic than gemütlich, reflecting the fact that the nice Austrian/​Danish couple that run the place have been doing so for around three decades, but the food is good and dependable. The rouladen is melt in your mouth. The wiener schnitzel holds its own and the vegetable side dishes are done in a savoury european style. Becks is on tap, which is nice, though more draft variety would be grand.
