100 stars for the view alone. I’ve been wanting to try Baja Calypso since it opened. I was a big fan of the eclectic menu at the previous Calypso. We originally were going to try and come for dinner but the cabs in Rosarito were playing hardball so we decided to drive out for brunch on a Saturday. Easy to find right on the mark of K38. We walk in and right away you can see the view. Greeted by the owner Gilles and his partner(sorry can’t remember her name). We sat outside to fully enjoy the beautiful view and were approached right away. Menu is still somewhat eclectic but also have some basics such as burgers and Caesar salad, eggs and bacon etc. My husband couldn’t decide and finally opted for the burger. I picked the Caesar and wild truffle mushroom soup. Oh and margaritas. The dressing on the salad was delicious. I’m a picky Caesar eater and often am disgruntled by them but I knew any restaurant that Gilles was a part of would have a fantastic one. And it didn’t disappoint. Highlight though was that mushroom soup. I could have bathed in it. It was phenomenal. Not sure if I have ever used that word in a review before but it’s highly deserved. Beautiful location, wonderful gracious staff(who speak perfect English by the way) awesome food… what more could you ask for?

Calypso was a favorite of ours when it was in Leucadia. Memories of my friends band playing in the dining area back then… Good times for sure. Well it has moved down South of the border to K38 — or Kilometer 38 — a popular surf spot back in the day and apparently still. On our recent weekend trip to Rosarito Beach, we had planned for several months to have dinner here at Baja Calypso and visit with«Gille», the owner. Finally, our plans came tom fruition. Except for one thing… we really wanted to eat dinner but got to drunk to drive the extra 15 minutes to dine here. Don’t worry, we were not driving already. I meant to say we didn’t want to hop in the car and drive drunk. A local Taxi quoted $ 20.00 for a one way trip from Rosarito Hotel to Baja Calypso. Ridiculous! It’s like 15 minutes. Not far at all and as one kind waiter told us Taxi’s in the area are kind of specific destination drivers. Apparently the cab driver we asked was more of a «Rosarito Beach to T.J.» trip driver and didn’t want to lose his place in front of the cab line for a small far so he, likely, bumped up the cost. Let this be a lesson to all — ask the cost first. We learned that the green and white cabs are the cheaper shorter distance drivers in that area. The yellow ones are the longer distance drivers. This rule is not set in stone and probably subject to change depending on the day of the weak or any other factor. By the way, Über is in Mexico now. Sorry. I got off track. Well, it was Saturday, sort of mid morning. Maybe closer to afternoon and we were a bit hung over. Therefore, no dinner this time. I was too messed up to decide off the menu so I ordered a cheeseburger and suggested a Caesar salad to Alisa. The salad just sounded like the right choice for heavily dehydrated hangover recipients such as ourselves. Alisa also ordered mushroom soup. Drinks? Yes please. Hair of the dog right? Bloody for me with glass of water and coffee. Alisa had Margaritas water and coffee. Perfect remedy for our state of mind as we bounced right back into goofy laughter like it was 12 hours earlier and party still in full effect. The food was great especially the mushroom soup and the salad. Great salad dressing and the drinks… great of course. In addition, I definitely want to mention the view — fantastic. It’s on the cliff over looking the surf. It was a nice sunny day, perfect temperature and we were sitting, laughing, eating and drinking on the patio in Mexico and loving life. I highly recommend Baja Calypso to everyone. Love it. In the words of General Douglas MacArthur«I shall return».

We love coming here every time we are in Baja. Gilles is a world class chef and buys his own fresh ingredients from local markets in Baja. You are getting the freshest ingredients possible. The meat in Baja is much better than in America too, it’s all grass fed and free range down here since they don’t have mass factory farms like in the States. The hummus, escargot, lamb, and crème brulle were unbelievable. Not only is the food and service great, but the restaurant is right on the ocean so you can watch the surf and sunset while enjoying your 5 star food at a fraction of the price you would pay north of the border. Calypso is also family friendly, with live music on weekends. Also keep in mind that Gilles is only at the restaurant on the weekends, so you might not get the same exact quality during the week. Do yourself a favor and go here(on a weekend).

Their breakfast gets 5 stars their dinner gets 1. I’ve been here for breakfast a couple times and it’s great. The food is wonderful, the service is fast, and the view is awesome. I’ve had the Lola omelette, the pacific eggs Benedict, and the grand mariner French toast. I loved all of them. It’s never very crowded in the morning either so I’m usually the only customer, thus awesome service. I really liked the place for breakfast so today I decided to come back for dinner and I must say that I was severely disappointed. The crab ravioli was overly sweet and thick. I think it had been sitting a while. I asked them if they still had halibut and they said they did so they made that for me off the menu. I can tell you what came out was nothing like halibut. It was cod or a similar flubbery fish. It was not very good. I asked the waiter what kind of fish it was and he backtracked and said it was a local fish that they call«Mexican halibut». I should’ve gotten the salmon, or the burgers which looked good. Oysters were also unimpressive and the service was much slower. So come here for breakfast but skip dinner!

Hmmm, I REALLY wanted to love this place! I’m pretty much a regular down in Rosarito area… I’m down there at my beach house about once every 6 weeks for a week. When the local ex-pats told me the cook from Bahia Cantilles restaurant had moved to Calypso… I was stoked. I had had some REALLY terrific steaks from him at Bahia Cantilles but the restaurant was a poor experience(no running water — toilets full… ewwww) so we wouldnt go there anymore. I gotta be honest… I ordered us two big steaks. and a Cesar salad to share. The waiter came out with the salad… hmmmm…it was ok, but tasted like the dressing came out of a bottle. Then he brought out two plates with ONE steak. What? No, no… we BOTH wanted steak I told him… Ohhhhhh, ok he said and he left. Then came back a minute later and said oh… that was the last steak. Ok, now I know… this is baja… and I get it… it was late… probably 9:30 and they only had one left… Ok I’ll deal with it… the waitor suggested adding the shrimp scampi. Ok, that sounds fine. Well the steak tasted like it was basted with a steak sauce. Like A1 or something. That’s fine if you like steak sauces but I’m NOT a fan… so that was seriously disappointing. Then the shrimp scampi came out and… hmmm…how do I describe it… it had a «tart» taste to it. Not a GARLIC taste like it should have had. My girlfriend could eat it at all… I managed to eat the shrimp. Bottom line… I KNOW this chef is VERY capable. I’ve tasted his food before 3 – 4 times and it was a rare treat in Baja to get food so good. So I will give it another chance… next time I’m down. And I’ll hope this night was just an anomaly. I’ll update this review when I do.

The service was terrible. The food was worse. I ordered tacos and got a chicken sandwich which was so processed that I couldn’t eat more than 3 bites. Plus it was a gross shade of yellow. The fries must have been fried in week-old oil because they were brown and as hard as rocks. Finally, the smell of sewer made it unbearable. The only redeeming feature was the pool table!

OMG, the escargot is awesome. I thought I would never eat escargot in my life. The owner Gilles is so personal, he came to our table to make sure we enjoyed the food and was to our expectation. I will come back for sure. Now waiting for for blues band to begin. So happy

I went here with friends while staying at Las Rocas because our Hotel Operator recommended it. Great service, nice place with ocean views, decent food, but DONOTORDERTHECRABRAVIOLI. I ate a few bites trying to force myself to like it since I was spending $ 17 on it but I just couldn’t do it. Then I spent all night feeling nauseous just thinking about it(my stomach still churns at the thought). I told the waiter I didn’t like it and he said something about discounting it but never did. We really did have great service except for that. We did end up returning for breakfast the next day and I had the pancakes which were delicious. Overall I would recommend the restaurant just not the crab ravioli.

Nice location. Don’t expect chips and salsa it’s not that kind of place. Four of us late lunch. Shirt steak was good, French Onion soup was too salty, seafood pasta in an Alfredo sauce(2) home run! Will go again, bar has dog ignores everybody. Lol
