Incredibly authentic and affordable Mexican food. Tacos are 7 pesos. Be careful of the orange sauce… very hot!

The El Pastor tacos were incredible. Just go, order at least two, and go light on the red sauce — hot! Can’t beat the value — quality food, incredible price, convenient location. 80 Pesos or $ 4.25 for four tacos and two bottled waters, this can’t be beat. We will be back!

At a 7 peso taco how can you go wrong. Al Pastor yes. Be careful on the red sauce, it will burn your lips in a nice way.

Tasty and Inexpensive Tacos at an Authentic Taqueria in Tulum! I visited Antojitos La Chiapaneca on the evening of November 13th with friends from the hostel I was staying at in Tulum. Antojitos La Chiapaneca is a casual and small hole-in-the-wall taqueria that serves authentic and inexpensive tacos and other traditional Mexican snacks(antojitos) and is located along Tulum’s main avenue(on the same side of the highway as the ADO bus terminal, between Calles Jupiter and Acuario). Everything in the restaurant is the colour red, from the walls to the tables to the chairs. The menu was small with only a few choices(but they make those things very well) and they served inexpensive(7 pesos per taco), traditional and simple Mexican tacos, panuchos, empanadas, sopes and more. There is a great salsa bar, with huge bowls full of a variety of toppings(like lime wedges, cilantro, onions, etc.), salsas and sauces. I enjoyed watching the Spanish music videos and thriller/horror movie on the old-fashioned retro television in the corner of the restaurant while I was eating. I ordered a variety of different tacos(including a vegetarian option) and they were all very fresh tasting and delicious! The tortillas also tasted fresh and were warm. This place is very authentic Mexican — the serving staff only speak Spanish and the menu is also only in Spanish. The service was good and staff were friendly. The atmosphere was very authentic, which I enjoyed. This place was very popular with the locals and it was crowded when I visited. They open at 6PM every evening for dinner/late night snacking. Just an FYI, alcohol is not served here, but they do sell a variety of delicious and refreshing aguas frescas. The staff didn’t speak any English and it was a fun challenge for me to practice my Spanish skills. The service was quick and friendly. I enjoyed the authentic atmosphere of this eatery. Antojitos La Chiapaneca is the best place in Tulum for authentic and cheap Mexican cuisine and it is perfect for budget travelers, backpackers, families, and couples. For those who are gluten-free and vegetarian like me, this place offered a vegetarian taco option and the tortillas were all corn-based.

I’ll keep this short and sweet: authentic, inexpensive tacos. Best al pastor I’ve ever had. I miss them already…

Excellent tacos al pastor– loved the bar in which you add your own lime, sauces, onions etc to the tacos. The pork was cooked to perfection, with a lovely barbecued flavour. We will be back before our week in Tulum is over!

What a fabulous find in Tulum. Thanks to Unilocal, once again. This is one of those hole in the wall taquerias that serve authentic tacos. We were actually not even hungry when we came in, we literally dropped by with the intention of munching on a couple of tacos and that’s it. So, we started with two pollo tacos and loved it so much that we ordered more of tacos with pastor, asado, empanadas and tostadas. The concept is simple, when your tacos/tostadas are ready, they’ll give you a plate of tortillas and meat on the top. You go to the condiments table and choose your toppings — green sauce, spicy sauce, chopped onions, chopped coriander leaves, lime wedges. Add all or anything you want, and eat. These are tooooo good. And the prices are cheap. We ended up eating 9 or 10 of a combination of tacos, tostadas and empanadas, and a coke and horchata and it came to around 100 pesos(~$ 5USD)! How cool can that be. I loved everything, but my personal favorites are the tostadas. Also I tried all the meat, and pastor is delicious. Have a tacolicious meal in this hole-in-the-wall, must try Mexican place.

For a local, cheap taco shop, this place is a dream come true. We stopped here multiple times during our week long trip to Tulum. For ~30 pesos(~$ 2USD), you can order a bunch of things off the menu. The al pastor meat is far better than any of the other choices, so no matter what you order, make it al pastor. The tacos are great, but I also recommend adding an item or two from the right side of the menu. The green sauce is tasty, but be careful adding the red, it is seriously hot. A few drops is plenty even if you like spicy stuff. Muy bien

Super tasty food. It’s a place you will return again and again. It’s small with a spicy red habanero sauce waiting to make you rethink the quantity of what you will use on your next taco. I recommend two stops not just one. I never give reviews but this place is worth one.

This little place is THEBEST! We came to tulum for our honeymoon and all my husband wanted to eat were yummy traditional tacos and La Chiapaneca absolutely delivered. In fact we came there for dinner 3 nights Ina row! The tacos are so cheap — only 7 pesos each so you can eat a ton and get out the door for less than $ 5 – 10 for 2 people. Their Pastor is incredibly flavorful and they shave it off a huge spit. They also have tasty tortas, sopes(our new favorite), gringas(cheesy tacos), and much more. They also have Aguas refrescas and sodas, but no alcohol. No ceviche, fajitas, platters or rice and beans but this is the spot for a cheap, delicious and super satisfying meal. Important to note, they are only open for dinner — after 5:30pm. You can grab a seat in their open air dining room and listen to some of the live music of the rotating musicians that pass through. Highly recommend :)

Wow! This restaurant is a complete hole in the wall and they speak no English. This was worrysome for my non-Spanish speaking husband and myself. However, we still navigated the menu and had an OUTSTANDING lunch at Antojitos. We ordered 6 taco combinations and two waters. MORE than enough food and would you believe me if I told you it was $ 7USD? This and El Pollo Bronco are by far the best, authentic Mexican restaurants in Tulum. Both come in under $ 10USD for two people. Just phenomenal. We can’t wait to come back and eat here again.

Simply outstanding! I am not quite sure there can be any other place in downtown Tulum that can serve any better food than this one. I wish I could give it 10 stars out of 5. That’s what it deserves. Hard to miss — a few blocks away from the Bus terminal on the main drag, this place has food with the flavors that are out of this world. Where I traditionally go for only tacos to see how much I like the food or not — the sight of the plate of tacos and the very first bite immediately prompted us to order a torta, a pair of Panuchos and a pair of tostadas. There wasn’t a thing that did not taste like heaven. And the salsa /salad bar to go with the food — that tomatillo purée along with the super hot habanero sauce — OMG. Last but not the least — the very refreshing and a very tall of horchata. What more can one ask for? Simply superb. The place is not too spacious but enough to keep the very nice staff always busy yet attentive. Don’t miss on this place. We will be back at least a couple of times more before we bid goodbye to the very beautiful Tulum!

I had intended to dine at El Camello, but discovered they were closed. The waitstaff at El Camello took pity on me(I must have looked very disappointed and hungry!) and kindly recommended The Barracuda restaurant three blocks away. I pedalled my bike back towards town and although I didn’t see The Barracuda, I did spot La Chipaneca; I recognized it(and the large hunk of MEAT) from my Unilocal search for restaurants in the area. I was there approximately 6:00pm; The place was busy with both locals and tourists occupying all the available seating, inside the restaurant. They have a couple of windows on the street with wooden stools and a sit down bar area for seating. I ordered tres tacos de pollo con queso(three chicken tacos with cheese) and a coca. I grabbed a wooden stool on the street and within five minutes I had my dinner. The waiter who took my order informed me the salsa, etc was inside on the salad bar and warned me the salsa was MUY caliente. I haven to admit I was a bit hesitant to heap on the guacamole, cabbage, onions; who knew how long it was sitting out? I did end up adding onions and salsa. The tacos were, YUM! So far, no repurcussions for my choice :). 3 tacos and a coke– just 32 pesos! La Chipaneca is certainly not fancy but what it lacks in ambience it gains in authenticity. This us the kind of place Mexican families bring their children to see the humongous hunk o’ beef rotating on the spit. It’s Mexican fast food and it’s a fun destination!

We found two taquerias in town with amazing al pastor tacos, and this was one of them. Totally worth the $ 20 round-trip cab ride from the beach to get to them, and so good that we came back twice! This place is just a nondescript, non-atmospheric restaurant close to the ADO bus station. Al pastor is the thing to get here, either atop tacos or sopes. Everything is so cheap that it’s practically free– tacos, sopes, bottled soft drinks, and a truly awesome salsa bar. Again, the al pastor is amazing! Menus are in Spanish, but people are friendly and patient when you’re attempting to communicate. Popular with expats. Watch out for mosquitoes if you’re sitting at the tables in the back. If you’re tired of the mediocre food on the beach side, Antojitos La Chiapaneca is a must.
