I’d heard great things about this restaurant so I was pretty excited to try it. Which just made the disappointment that much greater. My date and I were the first ones to be seated for a Saturday night dinner, around 6:00. A blues band was set to start around 7:30. We were limited in the appetizers we could order because of availability but we settled on the shrimp — this was very good. If tried to order the ribeye but was told they were out so settled for the New York sirloin. I asked for medium as MX tends to under cook and I prefer medium rare. My date ordered the habanero chicken but requested that they side the sauce because we tolerance for heat is low. (Admittedly, at this point, I was becoming frustrated because they were out of most of the menu items and I was wondering what the eventual dinner crowd was going to order.) My steak arrived and the crust was very tasty — a mustard based rub — but the meat was hideously undercooked to where fully half the steak was completely raw and inedible. My date’s chicken was good, but they didn’t side the sauce so she had to scrape it off and even so, couldn’t eat most of it because of the spice. Very limited desert menu simply because they«were out» of about 60% of the available menu. What was available were novelty ice-cream flavors but they had none of the cakes, or flans for which Baja is renown. The tab was about $ 85 including drinks which makes this the most expensive meal I’ve had in Baja and it was, definitely, the worst.

Quality food and delicious cocktails! Cool Baja vibe. Love the Tuesday night spaghetti special, and of course the awesome happy hour. Thanks to Preston for a wonderful evening. Bravo!

My wife, 5 month old daughter and I are staying at Las Gaviotas over the weekend. After perusing Unilocal for restaurants, Mule 61 caught my eye because of its eclectic menu and extremely reasonable prices. So, we tried it. Let’s just say that it was a great decision. We were treated like family from the moment we walked in all the way to being walked out to our car by flashlight. The people that run this place are as friendly as they come, and the food was great too. My wife had an amazing piece of halibut and I enjoyed some very tasty fried chicken(I know, fried chicken in Mexico doesn’t sound right). On top of that, we had a few awesome house margaritas at the happy hour rate of $ 2, which is obviously unbeatable. All in all, we were blown away by the way we were treated and will definitely be coming back.

Preston Butler played for the NY Jets and got the nickname of Mule 61, hence the name of the business. It is located 1 Km north(closer to Rosarito Beach) of Las Gaviotas and Ollie’s pizza. It is on the same side of the highway as those two places. Preston is originally from Martinique and his wife Alma is from Sonora. The menu includes many family recipes. They have a great hamburger special($ 6.95 for a build your own with fries) along with delicious international dishes. Mule 61 has a beautiful bar area where you can catch a meal with other patrons. Happy hour is daily between 4 – 7 pm. Right now, they are open Thursday, Friday & Saturday, but as summer arrives they will be expanding to Wednesdays(ladies night) and Sunday Brunch. Saturday night is Karaōke night There is a beautifully decorated large dining area and also a dining area in an art gallery room. The art changes, so catch the ones which are displayed right now. There is also an outdoor dining area where you can watch the sunset. There are delicious daily specials and tapas that are available a really good prices. I had the shrimp tapa which came with a great guacamole. The grilled shrimp had a delicious sauce on them. Finger licking good. I added the fresh bass piccata over linguini. Wonderful fresh flavors with just the right amount of spiciness. The bar is a full service bar with a wide screen TV. The staff will gladly put any U Tube video on the screen for you to enjoy. They have free WIFI. They have free parking. I strongly recommend that you meet Preston, one of the truly nice people of Baja and try his food. You will be pleased by the quality, the taste and the price. You can catch them on Facebook or check their website for the latest entertainment and special events. Sadly, after about 1 year of operations, this business has closed.
