Beresford Square Bar is a cosy wine bar with dim lighting, a great wine list and knowledgable wait staff. It’s pretty much the perfect pitstop for an afterwork wine. They also have a small tapas menu including all the usual suspects — bread and dips, chicken liver pâté, bruschetta etc. The wine list isn’t extensive but it has some interesting options — we tried a delicious Albarino(Sin Palabras) when we were there. If you can’t decide don’t hesitate to ask the bar staff for a recommendation, or if it’s by the glass, a taste — they are happy to oblige.

The original owners of Grey Lynn’s Mondial moved to Beresford Square in the city to create a similar business to their original idea — a nice, dimly lit place to enjoy small plates of great food in a bustling setting. The similarities to Mondial are hard to ignore, but that’s a good thing — I love Mondial and I’m really happy that there are more places like it in the city! The food is quickly prepared and appears to fall more into the snack zone than traditional tapas — I feel like I could start my night here after dinner, have a few nibbles and then head off into the night. On this particular evening we headed there for a meal and really stocked up on plates, enjoying the mushroom and blue cheese bruschetta, a bit of duck pâté parfait and a couple of rounds of salmon. The most impressive thing about this place, however, is the wine list! We couldn’t go past a bottle of sublime Pinot noir and were happy that Manuel the owner helped us pick it… now, to remember the name of it!

Tucked away in Beresford Square is this great little wine and tapas bar. Heaps of wines to choose from, and I especially liked the non-alcoholic options which I have never seen before — merlot grape juice served in a mini wine bottle. Nice. The menu is simple — there’s a blackboard with about 15 or so tapas options. They all looked so good so we ordered a selection. They were all pretty amazing I have to say, ranging from duck liver parfait to a cheeseboard. When you’re at K Road and just need a little place to meet up with a friend, this is it.
