I have distinct memories of coming here when I was younger every Friday after school, specifically to get a cupcake to eat whilst reading my newly loaned puzzle book I had just picked from the library down the road. Writing this down over ten years later makes me realise how nerdy that whole ordeal was that I would participate in religiously every week, but regardless of this I have to say that whenever I have been back since then their cupcakes have remained exactly the same(minus a few minor variations, such as introducing pink icing one time and mixing up the M&M on the top for a strawberry jelly). I should probably add that this bakery does in fact have other baked goods available other than cupcakes — their pies and sandwiches are pretty large and tasty, and not hugely expensive either. I think thats what I love about this place — they haven’t seemed to compromise size, price or taste due to commercial purposes like so many other businesses seem to do.

Fantastic bakery. It has an excellent selection of all the usual fare — pies, sandwiches, slices and all that jazz — at reasonable prices and super delicious. It’s nice to see decent vegetarian sandwiches — I had one with carrot, egg, beetroot, avocado and probably something else in there as well, but it was good. And you can bet that I had a go at their caramel slice as well. It’s a perfect spot to pop into and then head just across the road to the beach and enjoy all things good in the world(bakeries and the seaside, obviously). Look out to Rangitoto while you chow down on your pie or nibble at your ginger slice. Kick off your shoes and feel the sand between your toes while thinking about what you’re going to get at the bakery tomorrow. Life is good.

There are a lot of nice places to eat in St Heliers, but you still can’t beat grabbing something from the Breadwinner Bakery and walking the one minute to the beach, stretching out under a tree, and enjoying a little picnic all to yourself. Everything at Breadwinner is yummy — my favourites are the massive sandwiches, the pies, and the cream buns. It’s all your standard kiwi bakery stuff here and a massive variety of it. Everything is made to a high standard and the prices are very reasonable. They have some seats inside and n the footpath, and do coffees and teas to have in or takeaway, but with the beach so close, it’s a no-brainer.
