This is a real find — lively place and friendly staff — great for kids. The ice cream is very good and lots of great snacks as well. Highly recommended.

I’m a bit naughty and sneak off to the movies in the middle of the day sometimes, most often to this boutique theatre in Northcote Point(across the road from The Engine Room, one of my favourite restaurants). There are four theatres of varying size(the smallest one has only 18 seats). I can recommend the choc dipped icecreams — movies and icecream just ‘go’ together. Cheap days are Monday and Tuesday. Don’t forget to get a stamp on your loyalty card, see 9 and get one free, bargain.

Hervorragende Bild und Tonqualität, selten so was gutes gesehen. Vielleicht wurde das aber auch vom Film unterstützt. Empfehlenswert!

The Bridgeway is one of those places I think I should get to much more often. I probably on visit a couple of times a year, which really isn’t enough for such a high quality cinema that offers such wonderful art house films. The fact that it was awarded«Best Overall New Zealand Cinema» by the Australian Independent Distributors Association obviously shows that I’m not the only one. When I was there last — which, as mentioned, was too long ago — I saw a French-Canadian film about a sperm donor who discovers he has father over 500 kids. It was a great little film and typical of the fare delivered by the bridgeway. My only complaint is that they don’t serve those old-school chocolate-coated ice creams that used to be a staple at cinemas of yesteryear. Even so, you should get along and support what was voted«New Zealand’s Best Independent Cinema» as well as indie films in general.

It is surprising how much of an affect a good cinema can have on your opinion of the film as a whole. Every movie that I have seen at Bridgeway has been a good one, I think this was made s by the cinema as well as the film itself. Bridgeway is situated in Birkenhead Point, unassuming and quaint. It doesn’t look like your typical cinemas and I love this. It’s small which gives it a boutique feel. The staff are friendly and professional, they are clearly film lovers. You can get ice creams, drinks and popcorn, and there is a restaurant in the same building which is perfect for pre or post movie drinks and food. The cinemas themselves are always clean and the seats are really comfy. The theatres are small enough to make you feel special but big enough to make it seem like a big deal. Get dinner at the great restaurant and make a night of it. They also show film festival movies so get in early.

In these modern days of technology, enterprise and the search for profit, I feel that it is the people who end up on the losing side. Small businesses close down, and franchises replace them, selling food that taste the same, clothing that looks the same and services that are the same. I miss the days where mom and pop stores offered a unique product range, a menu that was only available at that diner and services that could not be duplicated. At The Bridgeway Theatre you still get this taste of the past; movies are shown that don’t cater for the masses, across the road you can dine on food that is unique and overall you will experience something you just won’t get at a big mall. Now don’t get me wrong, I love the modernization of the world, I just don’t like all aspects of it.

This is the Art house cinema of Auckland! Beautifully designed architecture, and vintage style décor, keep the cinema lover’s eyes roaming when you walk in the entrance. The ticket reception and food/wine/coffee parlor are all one, and makes for a busy foyer on an opening night. Watch recent art house releases, a current film festival or a good commercial film here. The cinemas are intimate, and the smallest seats only eighteen. I see there is wheel chair access available, with a lift up to the first level, and access in three separate cinemas which is very convenient if with an elderly patron. Perfect to match with the Café next door for a meal.
