More of a bungalow on the inside than the outside, this viaduct watering hole is decorated with bamboo rafters and paper lanterns and tropical fish tanks. A good venue for a South Pacific themed party and it even has a heated balcony that can be used for feeling like you are on tour own island. The beers are cheaper than many of its neighbours, but don’t expect too much from the cocktails. No Tom Cruise here either. Put on your best Hawaiian shirt, invite your new best mate JK and party like its 1949!

5 dollar beer nights at Bungalow 8 are a great time to visit. Not are posey as some of the Viaduct places that look directly out onto the water mean it takes a while for this place to fill up but by the second shift, after the sensible people have gone home, it kicks off pretty good. It feels a little run down on the décor and I am not sure if thats the look they are going for or whether they need to decorate. Supposedly this is the place the celebs go to, if you believe the marketing, but I find that difficult to digest.

I really like the word bungalow, it has good connotations of a little ocean fronting hideaway on an exotic island somewhere. You can definately see that is the look they are attempting to revive at this bar. From the cool fish tanks lining one of the inside walls, to the rattan/cane outdoor furniture, beachside ‘chic’ is a resonant theme at Bungalow8. For a Friday night, it was a little quiet compared to some other bars, but it was beginning to pick up by the time we left. The dance floor was going off though, thanks to some sweet moves by me and a decent d. j playing some foot stompingly good tunes. I don’t know if this is a student bar or what, but the clientele seemed to be super young. There were some dudes playing at being adults with a pitiful excuse for facial hair, and some manky suits, that looked so young that if I had been guarding the door I wouldn’t have let them in.

I always used to walk past this bar when I was a fresh 18 year old in town and think that this bar looked really classy, too classy for me in fact. Well yes at the time it was but now, 5 years later and I am feeling very much the opposite. What was once a sophisticated bar is just yet another club crawling with pre teens and not even good looking ones at that; ones that look like ProActive before shots. ALTHOUGH they still have the beautiful fish tanks outside that make the place look extremely upmarket, it’s a shame the crowd let’s the place down because it is a great venue, very big.

Yet another club and bar on the viaduct that promotes itself as trendy and upmarket. This is one of those places that will charge you a $ 10 cover charge, on some nights you will be disappointed and on some nights you will enjoy yourself. It’s like most clubs, some nights are good, some nights you want to smash the DJ for playing shit music. On the occasions I have been to Bungalow 8, I have been served what tasted like watered down cider and a decent red bull & vodka. Might have something to do with the bartender. It is a great place to head to on a Friday night to have a few drinks with your workmates and friends. The bar is located on the fringe of the viaduct which makes a few other bars and clubs a few minutes walk or stumble away. If you want to get a feel of the vibe at Bungalow, I suggest standing outside and listening to the music and peering through the balcony at what people are doing. Sometimes those long lines, aren’t a good judge, as to whether the night is a good one.

A good place to go after work on Fridays for their happy hour specials, and they have a cool outdoor balcony area flanked by fish tanks, making it unique. The only issues I have with Bungalow are the music and the drinks. Twice I’ve asked for Mojitos and ended up with lime juice and soda water. But hey, I get it, Mojitos aren’t the easiest drinks to make, but for a place that sells itself as an upmarket bar in the Viaduct, a cocktail staple should be something you get right.
