Carpark seems to be a popular joint to go to for after work drinks and pizza. I used to go there after uni on Fridays for the good, cheap pizza then have a few drinks and move on. This place gets packed out on Friday and Saturday nights are often there are uni parties held here so beware in advance. Many a great time is to be had at Carpark but it is definitely for the younger crowd. Recently I have seen photos of fire breathers and performers outside Carpark entertaining the long lines of people waiting to get in on Friday and Saturday nights which is a cool feature.

Don’t tell anyone, but I have reached my forties, and I’m not too happy about hitting this major milestone. It is not that I’m worried about getting old, or hitting a midlife crises, nope, none of that. It is that I’m not a kid anymore; I’m not in my dirty thirties, where you are still excused for behaving like a free spirit. To celebrate the big day, I invited a select group of friends to enjoy a few drinks, and hit the town big time. The plan was to enjoy a quiet one at The Carpark, and then hit the Viaduct afterwards. That was the plan, in reality we got stuck eating their $ 5 pizzas, watched the Super Rugby on the big screen, and danced the night away. The bar staff are awesome, the prices reasonable and the layout excellent. The only negative must be the limited bathroom facilities. But overall it is a go to bar for anyone looking for a good night out.

Carpark is a decent pub for after work drinks or as a rendezvous point when other bars start closing earlier during the week. If you go later in the evening you will have to fight through a cluster of people, as the outdoor seating is in the entrance. Earlier in the evening you can enjoy the standard bar pizza on the wooden road-side benches, hidden behind a stunted shrubbery. Late nights and weekends may incur a door charge and a scuffle to reach the bar(even though it goes right through the center of the venue). Pool sticks and girls screeching to Top 40 hits will help push you toward the bartenders, who I’ve never seen smile. Carpark is a mediocre sports bar that tries to be a club by staying open late.

The Carpark is that one place in town you never want to end up in, but at least one friend ends up there and you have to pay an unfortunate $ 5 door charge to drag them out. The last time I was there, I believe I was amongst a massive crowd of teenagers dancing(if you could call it dancing) to the ZM Top 40. This is my main gripe with this place as their music sounds more like daytime radio than club music. Despite this, it gets packed inside and out here, but the security does a pretty good job with weeding out the troublemakers. The Carpark has a great layout that separates the dancefloor really well from their seated area, with convenient access to the bar from all sides. The only other redeeming quality of The Carpark is the bar; they make some excellent Skittles and Snickers shots and they can serve a long line at a decent speed so you don’t have to wait too long. For me, The Carpark just isn’t my cup of tea when it comes to music and its patrons. The general demographic is just a little too young for the 21 and overs.

The many times I have stumbled out of The Carpark, drenched in sweat and still fist pumping to the song in the club is too many to count. The Carpark is one of those places you don’t want to suggest as your first choice, when it comes to clubs but somehow you end up there. It is also a club where you befriend complete strangers, well not really befriend! Last time I was at The Carpark we ended up running away from this girl who had ditched her friends to dance with us. At first it was okay, but then she started getting rather aggressive, each time my boyfriend or my friend would try to dance with me she would start flapping her arms. I don’t know if that was a dance move but I decided it was time to leave, When she turned her back we did a runner. Yes, be weary of strangers at The Carpark. The music and staff are friendly but I don’t know if I can say the same for the crowd.
