I’ve been to Degree several times over the past year, as I used to live near Victoria Park. This bar and restaurant is in a great location at Viaduct Harbour, close walking distance from car parking and Britomart. You can choose to sit indoors, or outside near the marina(separated by the Viaduct walkway). Pick the latter if its good weather! They do a good variety of pizzas, however I don’t find them to be anything special; my partner said she would prefer to get pizza from Dominos, they’re cheaper and you can eat them at home(though I disagree, there are some amazing restaurant made pizzas — just not here)! Their Free Range Pork Scotch is absolutely delicious, and comes with roast pepper and barley risotto, spicy plum gel, and apple sauce. Expensive, but will leave you feeling very satisfied! They were also doing a great range of curries at one stage, but having a look at their menu online, I can see that they’re only doing a caribbean chicken curry at the moment(which I haven’t tried). Degree often have international staff from the UK or the US, and they’re usually super friendly — but stress levels do rise on a busy night, as they can anywhere else. If you sign up with their newsletter online, they frequently send out some good meal offers, so worth a look if you eat here regularly(or would like to).

Food wasn’t good. Gave it 2 starts, location great, nice place, clean cute bathroom, good service. Ok for a beer? Bad food. Got steak on stone. Cool concept, bad steak. Thai salad. Weak. Flavorless. Liked the dipping sauce for ciabatta bread, tasted like tomato relish. Appletenni, tasted really weird, not good!

Came here for drinks and light food. On Thursday they have $ 10 mojitos which were pretty good(although a little bit on the light alcohol side if you know what I mean). I shared some Louisiana fried chicken and hummus and pita bread. The fried chicken was actually pretty tasty. They fried up some chicken strips with some kicked up breading. The hummus and pita bread was pretty generic, nothing really too spectacular but not bad. I do appreciate that they have a variety of specials during different days of the week, so I know I will be back to try something else next time.

Friday lunch here with a friend. This place has plenty of seating, in the heart of viaduct, which means awesome outdoor view on a nice day! They have a menu ranging from small dish, salad, pub food, main to stonegrill! Good for a big group to share plates. We order a stonegrill taste plate and a squid ring entrée to share. Portion is just right for us. But won’t consider it generous for the price! However they have some $ 14 lunch special eg fish and chips and chicken qusadella Our dish come with 3 sauces and a hot stone which we get to cook the meat ourselves to our liking. Fun! Overall experience is good. Will return to try their lunch special!

Showed up for dinner on a Sunday night. Was seated promptly as the restaurant was pretty empty. Waited for about twenty minutes until I could finally flag down someone to take my order. Could not understand why I had to do that as it was not busy at all. Waited for 30 minutes and food had not arrived. Noticed two other parties that had arrived maybe 10 – 15 minutes earlier had gotten their food already. No follow up from waiter. After an hour had passed since I arrived I just got up and walked out. Thanks for the water

Great location, friendly but not overly attentive staff. I had the prawns(which were good) albeit NZ$ 25 for a pint felt a lot. Drinks we’re relatively cheaper although the selection of beers was not great. Bit of a scene but not too bad.

Although i was here quite some time ago, i feel that i am obliged to post this up as this was by far one of the top 3 worst dinning experienced i have ever encountered anywhere in the world. If you like bad signature burgers and no service, than this is the place for you. Not sure how a place such as this can get even more than 1 star. After being seated, numerous waitstaff passed by and didn’t acknowledge or even bother to ask if I wanted anything to drink or if I was ready to order. It’s like I had serious bad odor or looked as I came from outer space. After being ignored for about 10 minutes, I flagged down a person to take my order and drink. Are your really that short staffed or extremely busy? Either way, your policy for acknowledgement of guests at your restaurant sure is due for an overhaul. Luckily the pint of beer came fast, but wait there is more. Drink almost gone, no burger in site and being ignored again by waitstaff did not make things any better. Flagged down a waitstaff and told her the situation, she finally came back and said it would be another 3 minutes. Seriously, 3 more minutes? Needless to say that i was not happy about this and she probably sensed it. At the sometime another waitstaff came by and said(with fake smile) «I was gonna come by and apologise for the wait, can I get you a complimentary drink while you wait.». She must of got the heads up from the waitstaff that i had flagged down. The complimentary drink was appreciated, but does not compensate being ignored the previous 30 minutes. I can make a burger in less time then that at HOME, needless to say at a well equip restaurant. When the cold burger arrived with the side of stale cold fries came out, I was speechless. Almost like a Master Card moment, PRICELESS! The burger patty was seared to a perfect well done charcoal black. The«greens» that came with the burger appears to be «rocket», it was so wilted as if it was sauteed. Haven’t you heard that hot food should be hot and cold food should be cold? Why would you want to assemble the burger for your guests and combine the hot items with the cold items. How can you call this one of your so called«signature» burger? If the previous waitstaff who offered the complimentary drink really did care about my experience, she could off just simply came back to check up again and ask. It was evident that the apology was not sincere or she just simply didn’t care, as she was now where in sight after my meal. She must of been part of the management team, as she had the authority to comp drinks. At least they are consistent in one thing, which is ignoring people. Most people go out dining for the food and service experience, unfortunately I didn’t get either this time around and felt as i have been cheated for paying the service charge.

Degree has a lovely atmosphere and a contemporary feel. I was seated outside with a great view of the harbour(Degree is in a perfect location). The staff/service are very cooperative, kind and nice. The food took around 20 – 30 minutes however the food was worth the wait, I ordered the beer battered fish and chips which is served with tartare sauce and a side salad. This would be a understatement but the food was DELICIOUS! Absolutely magnificent! The price was reasonable, the fish was cooked to perfection and the chips crispy. I could not recommend this restaurant enough!

Just visited Degree for the third time ever, and first time in over 10 years. It’s changed a lot but they still have the thing I most remembered, the great stone grill menu. I enjoyed it back on my first trip to Auckland as a teenager and it’s still enjoyable now. Unfortunately it seems that while that has remained the rest of the restaurant has changed significantly, it’s now much more focused on being a pub, and service has gone downhill. The food is a solid 4 stars, very tasty and at a very good price considering the location. I enjoyed the President and it was great, I was able to cook it to medium rare and thoroughly enjoy. Unfortunately the service wasn’t on par with the food. I had to wave down the manager just to pay my bill. The weirdest part of the entire experience though was that I was nearly denied entrance despite showing TWO forms of ID. They said that I needed my passport to be able to eat(I didn’t even plan on drinking). I only carry around California Driver’s License but they insisted that I needed a passport. I ultimately showed them all my credit cards matched my name and they let me in. If you’re going to run a restaurant though I don’t see why you must be so insistent on having domestic IDs, especially in a location that appeals to tourists like this. I’ll visit again… and bring some additional forms of ID but this restaurant has definitely lost the luster it had back in its early days, though still not a bad choice.

We ate here our first night in New Zealand and for just walking around the harbor looking for a place to eat it turned out pretty well for us. It seems it’s a rather popular bar in the evenings, we were there a little too early for that crowd though. We were seated quickly and they have a gluten free menu available which makes navigating what to order super easy. There is a pretty substantial menu in general and their gluten free one isn’t bad. Service was pretty average and our food came out in decent timing. The gluten free pizza bread was awesome! It was probably my favorite thing I had there that night. We also shared a seafood platter– the degree ocean selection. It had a few things I could have on it including the mussels, smoked salmon, and prawn shooters. The fritters and calamari were obviously off limits to me. The seafood was good, pretty fresh tasting, though the salmon had a bit of a fishy taste to it. The mussels were great and cleaned well, prawns had good flavoring. Portions were just about enough for two people. It’s pretty darn expensive on this side of the world as it is but this seemed even more so than usual. 10 for the bread and 55 for the seafood, and then naturally drinks in NZ are always expensive. Pricey night but food was pretty good, I wouldn’t be opposed to trying it again if I’m ever in the area.

Yummy pizzas in the evening overlooking viaduct and a great electronic vibe with good beer at night. Adore the music at this place… far better than its neighbors lol

Dined in as part of a pre-booked large table on Saturday night. Very lax service, it took several attempts to catch a waitresses’ eye, one of our party ordered a drink that never arrived, so he had to almost grab a waitress to order again. One of our party’s meal arrived late… Well after the rest of us had finished dinner, one if our dining party had finished his dessert, and I was waiting for my dinner plate to be cleared to ask for a dessert menu… And still my friend’s main hadn’t turned up. We had an apology from a male waiter, who offered a complimentary dessert(before the meal came out), but by the time he’d finished his main, that waiter was nowhere to be seen, and an enquiry about the free dessert to the only waitress who would stop by our table, showed that the offer was apparently only for that moment(again, BEFORE his main came out, which makes no sense to me). The food was yummy,(hubby had surf and turf stone grill and I had the duck), but for the price, I would’ve expected much better service. Waiting almost an hour for dinner plates to be cleared, and having to almost force a waitress to bring a dessert menu, when they weren’t exactly run off their feet, is just silly. Oh, and I’d signed up to the loyalty card the week before, but it didn’t arrive in time to use it on this visit. Not sure if I’ll be back, so I’d suggest signing up at least a month early if you’re going to try this place, we missed out on a shed load of points from our group!

Restaurant by day club by night, Degree definitely is bringing anything new to the table, a very standard experience, but it does have a great location. Whereas the restaurant attracts a reasonably sophisticated crowd during the day, the night club hosts a slightly younger crowd — a whole lot of drunk students getting their boggie on to latest poppy dance hits. They let far too many people in to the club, maybe I went their on a busy night, but I couldn’t even move, the toilets were disgusting, it took me 15 minutes to get a drink, and dancing involved grinding against a whole crowd of strangers in what was essentially a mosh pit — good times.

I had my birthday at Degree once with about 16 other people for a Saturday night dinner. I’ve always enjoyed the food here but this one particular experience was the last time I’ve been there. I had called a week in advance to book our table, then again two days before to confirm. When I arrived 15 minutes early, they claimed I had not booked a table with them and tried to convince me that I’d made a reservation at another restaurant further down the viaduct. After another 15 minutes of fluffing about, and most of my friends already arriving, the manager finally came out to speak with us and gave us a few free drink vouchers. While the rest of the night went well, I was more than a little pissed at the fact that we’d spent a lot of money there that night, yet I couldn’t even make a simple reservation– twice. Not too sure how they missed a reservation for 17 people, but negatives aside, we did have a good night and the staff were really efficient with waiting our table throughout the night. Unfortunately, bad experiences are rather memorable so I don’t think I will be visiting Degree again anytime soon.

As a club, I can definitely take or leave Degree, there’s only so many times you can hear the same tunes, BUT, as an option for a meal, I am much warmer to them. With a prime location opposite the Maritime Museum in the heart of the Viaduct, it definitely works for them, getting some awesome afternoon sun and people watching options on. The main drawcard for me is their stonegrill option. There’s nothing more enjoyable than having a great big piece of eye fillet delivered to your table sizzling away on the stone, cooking it to perfection AS you eat it, and served with a decent portion of chips of steamed veggies, really can’t go wrong there. Sure it’s priced as a sometime meal, but still worth it for that alone.

Degree as a bar does not have a stellar reputation, but it always looks like the crowd inside are having fun and there are some signs about cheap drinks on the windows. I still think it’s best avoided in the evenings. It is however, as Oliver G has pointed out, a great place to eat. The location on the sunniest corner by the big boat has to be one of the best in the viaduct, and they have plenty of outdoor seating, as well as big picture windows for those who arrived a bit late. The food is reasonably priced for the viaduct, it’s tasty and portions are large. I have not tried the stonegrill, as why pay to eat at a restaurant then cook yourself? It does come highly recommended by others though, and the chefs will probably thank you for choosing that option too.

Degree is a fairly decent bar to visit on a night out. They play pretty generic dance music but they do have a nice little balcony upstairs with its own bar and dance floor which is nice if you’re there with a group and want to get away from the crowds at the main dance floor. It’s one of those bars you go to when you want to dance to a variety of music and sing along.
