Tucked away in a corner block of shops on Gladstone Road, Catch A Fish caught my attention as it had won some award so I thought I’d check it out. The burgers were awesome, massive in size at a reasonable price. They have a unique tartare sauce, with a particular flavour other tartares don’t seem to manage. However over the last year or so, the tastiness has seemed to deteriorate slightly, with the burgers having a more simple selection of ingredients — basically lettuce, tomato and red onion, as well as the filling obviously. Regardless of any perceived decline, Catch A Fish have persisted in making great quality fish and chips at a reasonable price, unlike some daylight robberies occurring around Auckland for the same food, if not inferior.

A tiny little fish and chip takeaway that you would hardly notice, unless you went looking for it — it’s just off Gladstone road at the dairy. The local Parnellites know all about it though and it packs out on Friday/Saturday night. It’s simply of the best fish and chip shops in Auckland — the fish and chips are quite dry and not the greasy shit you get in some takeaways. I always go for the snapper and the fish is good quality as is the batter. I often think the secret of good fish and chips is the batter and they get it bang on in this place. They also sell takeaway shellfish and you can get a little pot of fresh mussels to go with your fish and chips. I think the fish in chips in New Zealand is far better than you get in the UK and this is one of the best places to find it.
