One of Ponsonby Road’s classic corner bars, Chapel is at its best and liveliest on Sunday afternoons and in the evening. At lunchtimes, the vibe is much more laid back and you can move around without bumping shoulders with well-dressed strangers. The lunch menu includes tasty tidbits such as mussel sliders and duck pancakes as well as a range of their famous pizzas. The service is friendly and the venue offers a peaceful respite within which to contemplate the world outside. Amen.

For sure one of my favorite bar by far, love it’s location, the view on the sky tower as well when you are hanging out outside, the atmosphere and also the décor is really nice. Service is good and efficient, and also if you register to their news letter they have many promotion. Sunday afternoon is the best day if you want to rock it a bit. Starting from pm there is dj and it starts to get wild! A must go in ponsonby anyway

My Dad and his mates hang out here on Thursdays so it’s not really a place I tend to frequent. Not because I don’t like my Dad(he’s pretty rad), just because I don’t really think it necessary to drink at the same place as he does. Chapel’s a bit of alright though. It does get pretty packed. If it’s sunny outside there’s always people spilling on to the street, especially on a Sunday. The clientele are a mixed bunch — all walks of life and all ages(18+, of course). Their pizzas are surprisingly legit for a pub and they always seem to have some sweet drinks specials.

I went to this little gem on one layover to Auckland a few years ago. Not going to lie, I was pretty tipsy already, ate some random guy’s pizza which was delicious! I remember a big red horse head on the wall. The drinks were pretty well priced — we were drinking white wine. The bar was well layed out, and the company was wonderful! ;)

Popped in for one, stayed for hours. Cold wine, decent beers, v good cheesy garlic bread. Friendly and buzzing. Definitely worth a drop-in.

I’ve frequented Chapel many times. It used to be the place to be, especially on a Sunday. But now it’s full on letchy guys and very drunken women. Still ok now and again, but Kingsland is calling.

I went here for the first time last week for a girly catch up and a bite to eat. We went here on a Friday so it was packed with after-work-drinkers and people wanting to watch the rugby game that was on. Before I went, I was actually under the impression that this was quite a classy bar… and maybe it is when it’s not a Friday night with a rugby game on, but that night it certainly wasn’t. I’m not sure why but it seems like whenever men see a group of girls together they immediately assume they’re single. WRONG. Yucky guys aside, we liked the pizza and the huge bucket of fries we ordered, it was enough to feed the three of us with some left over. The service was a little annoying though. Whenever our drinks got below the halfway point we were immediately badgered to order a new drink. I don’t know how many times we had to say«no, we’re fine». I think I’ll try it again on a different night when there’s a different crowd.

I have a few things to say about Chapel. 1. If you are female, expect to get hit on. 2. Sunday evenings seem to go off. 3. The pizzas are pretty good. I’m not really partial to Chapel based on the usual patrons, but them aside, it’s a nice bar in a good location with outdoor seating. There are often lurky guys that hang out there, jocks, girls who wear heels to the supermarket, the odd cougar. If you can deal with potentially seeing that, you’re all good.

Ponsonby is still the undisputed hangout for Auckland’s young and trendy, and with all the elite bookstores, divine coffee shops and designer boutiques, this title is not likely to be challenged soon. So it comes as no surprise that the best after work, drinks destination, finds itself in Ponsonby What I like about Chapel Bar is the coolness factor, the fact that you can say to anyone to meet you at Chapel Bar, and they know where it is. Of course the staff, menu and location adds to its value, but that coolness factor gives you the high. You want to drink there, because you feel good to drink there. Watching Auckland’s beautiful people go about their business helps me build up a thirst; barman — I’ll have another.

Chapel Bar is where you can sit, and sip a cider in the sun in summer time and watch the world past you by. Or in winter cosy up at long tables with your mates eating yummy gourmet pizzas and grooving along to the latest hip DJ in the mix. After dinner, stay longer and as the bistro becomes a bar/club watch people mill in one after another till your packed in all intimately. I do enjoy a Sunday night at the Chapel, you never know who you will strike up a conversation with, and all the Retro tunes seem to come out on those nights too. Great music, good company, class service, and fine beverages to choose, makes this a hit on Ponsonby Road.

Popular bar and bistro located on the corner of Ponsonby Road and Anglesea Road, it couldn’t be in a better spot. Chapel is the ultimate place to grab a bite and drink and sit outside in the sun with friends. Always pumping, Chapel caters for a wide range of ages however is most popular with middle aged folks. Despite its glowing reputation, there has always been something about it that has put me off. Often referred to as the ‘place to be’ in Ponsonby, it may be this reputation that has helped influence my opinion. Chapel has such a strong following within its target age group that I feel somewhat intimidated going there. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t warrant a visit. Driving home from work on a Sunday afternoon, I often pass Chapel and am impressed by how busy it is. Constantly packed with people, Chapel hosts regular live music and gigs, and offers a range of food and beverages from oysters and pizzas to top-notch wines and beers. There is even a kids menu available, so parents don’t feel like you need a babysitter to go to this one!
