Nice atmosphere in a good downtown location. The staff were friendly and offered to deal with any issues we had. Unfortunately the issues kept mounting up throughout our meal. We ordered two starters, «Jimmy’s Grandma’s Sausage Roll», and the«Tokyo Fried Chicken». However, we were delivered a fried prawn dish and the sausage roll was cold and had what looked like a pubic hair in it(we were informed this was how it was supposed to be delivered — cold I mean, not with a pubic hair) we sent the sausage roll back and the staff rightly offered not to charge us for this dish. The prawns were actually quite good. We then ordered our mains, «Peking Duck Salad» for my wife, and«Sirloin(250gm) with chunky fries and an egg» for me, medium rare, and a side of mashed potatoes. The table next to us had also ordered the duck salad as it turns out, and it arrived minutes after we ordered our mains. It was delivered without the duck… uh-oh. It was replaced within minutes though. My steak arrived and was medium to well done and was not seasoned at all. My wife’s duck salad however had large chunks of rock salt throughout. Over all a very disappointing dining experience, we very rarely send our food back or complain about our food to staff if theres an issue but there were just too many things wrong this time so we had to say something.

First time visitor and so disappointed. Amazing space and definitely somewhere I’d want to visit on a regular basis and bring visitors and clients but the service and drinks offering is sorely lacking and needs attention. We visited for pre-dinner drinks before a reservation somewhere else. Having not been there, and with seating in the bar area full, we hovered for a while near the entrance by the bar and no one greeted us. Eventually a manager type showed us to some lounge seats at the back of the restaurant area where we waited for what seemed like an eternity and still no one served us. The staff appeared pleasant enough but just not professional hospo staff — they were just milling around. One of or party walked back on the bar and when we eventually got someone’s attention she advised that there was no cocktail list(seemingly a huge miss for a place that’s so well suited to cocktails and great quality drinks). Vodka choice was really poor — no premium vodkas(again a huge miss). We weren’t offered menus, even though we likely would have ordered snacks with our drinks. What also seems very strange is the staff uniforms. Waitstaff were in green polo shirts, and some were wearing running shoes — completely not up to the standard of the incredible interior design — such a miss. Didn’t stay for more than one drink. Feels like the place needs new managers…

What has happened to this place? It has completely fallen off the radar, so much so that when I got asked to meet for a drink there last night my immediate thought was — is that place is still open? It’s actually a bit perplexing since last year the architects(Fearon Hay) won the supreme award from the NZ Institute of Architects for their revitalization of the building. And deservedly so, the space is fantastic. I am in love with their internal courtyard. It’s surrounded by brick and features a single white cherry tree. It makes you feel like you are a million miles away! We came here for an after-work drink and easily got a table. I thought the service was great, especially considering were just in for drinks. When we ordered at the bar the waiter brought us over water when we sat down, which was much appreciated and rarely happens in bars these days. It wasn’t my shout so I can’t comment on price but I imagine it would be on par with other bars in the area. Even thought we didn’t eat, I did notice that when we left just after 7pm, the courtyard was reasonably full but there was still no one eating in the restaurant. Makes me wonder, do they still even serve food?!

This is clearly a late night place. At 7:00 pm there is almost no one here! Very cool looking place with a small bar, couch seating and tables as well. Entrances on Queen Street and Fort Lane — but hard to find from the street as it is all upstairs, i.e., no store front. Seared tuna with watermelon, wasabi cream and citrus was a delicious appetizer. Pork belly ramen with nori, mushrooms and soft boiled egg was excellent as well. I didn’t have the sake, though they had a large selection. They had Kirin on tap and it was great though pricey.

Unlike other restaurants where the drink menu is more or less designed to accompany the food, this place’s food is actually designed to accompany their extensive sake offerings and other drinks. A nice twist in my opinion and after all, goes with their name Izakaya. Highly recommend the lotus root chips, cured snapper, the duck leg and the chicken wings. Great setting too, reminds us of a few places in Sydney that we had great experiences in. Keep it up!
