This is your classic tourist bar — very casual vibe with a load of different mix of people from all walks of Earth and drink specials at certain times. It certainly does not blend in to the rest of the bars in Auckland Central that is for sure. This one is very, VERY casual and because basically everyone are tourists they aren’t as, well, unfriendly as Aucklanders tend to be. Lets be honest. This bar is set in a handy location with all the rest of Auckland City bars and clubs at your finger tips. This place is usually a handy place to start with their great happy hour deals.

This is the least pretentious bar you will find in central Auckland, really it’s a fun, down to earth backpackers bar. Sure does represent the world if you have a drink at this little bar on Fort street, talk to your fellow neighbour you’re bound to learn a few new things of the world around you. Great way to make a few new friends from around the world, just you might not remember who they were the next day. They have happy hour specials during the week, which is always great for a catch up with a mate, and are close enough to a strip of other bars and clubs should you feel like a bar crawl. Great music and a fun atmosphere.

The Fat Camel bar always seems to be the starting point to my nights out. However, thinking about it, I have no idea why as it plays terrible music and never seems to be particularly happening. It is, first and foremost, a backpacker bar(it is attached to Nomads Fat Camel hostel) so it’s important not to forget that. It’s cheap, the staff are friendly and they have game nights like beer pong tournaments going on regularly. But for a night out, it’s definitely not the one. Every time I go in there, the music is the same selection of cheese I’ve heard a million times before and the place rarely feels busy other than when filled with people beginning their bar crawl on a Thursday night. Seeing how Fort Street Union blossomed from being the rubbish bar attached to the other Nomads hostel a few years ago, to being one of the coolest eateries in the area now, I can’t help but wonder if The Fat Camel bar also needs new life breathed into it.
