First things first, it isn’t really a ‘square’ as such — more of a truncated ovular rectangle. Secondly, Freyberg isn’t some type of challenger to molenberg in the bread stakes, it is named after a New Zealander who was the General in a few Allied maneuvers in the second world war. Freyberg Square is an interesting place, one which changes its populace as the day trudges on. From the business people who fill up the square at lunchtime, to the nighttime vagrants who drink beside the waterfall. This used to be a place which would fill up with emo kids almost every weekend, but thankfully that trend seems to have died, with the various adherents of the trend now starting to pop up among the business people of the daytime. There are a few cafes near by, as well as Rakinos which overlooks the square from its grand balcony.

Freyberg Square cuts a swathe through the high rise buildings and apartments of the CBD and gives business people a chance to see the sky during their weekly incarceration. The high fashion of High, Chancery and O’Connell streets converge here in a modest little square in the open air. A bronze statue gives a reminiscent nod to Lord Freyberg who served at Gallopli and, later, received the Victoria Cross. A clean little square for respite from the city, which also serves as a nice backdrop to the bars or restaurants that surround it, especially with its summery fountain and gardens.

I love Freyberg Square — a nice little public square set right in the middle of the High Street area beneath the Metropolis tower. It’s a favourite spot for the business crowd looking to escape the office for lunch, as well as students and skateboarders who enjoy jumping the skates and sculptures. Being on High Street, there’s always a great deal of pedestrian traffic through the square which means it’s a great spot to people-watch. It aint perfect but I like that it’s not plastic — it’s always full of people and that’s the gauge of a good public square in my book.

This is the go to spot for inner city workers who bring their lunch from home or purchase take away sushi and don’t want to eat it in the office. It can be nice at times. When it is sunny and the people aren’t imposing on your lunching personal space time. But sometime theres the odd homeless guy sitting in the corner counting quarters. Awkward. But in general its okay. The steps are useful for sitting except when they get wet from the water feature. Awkward again. It is also a really exposed area so right out in public. Ive seen better spots in the city where you can chill out for a bit. I also don’t think this spot really suits the surrounding shops and high end lines of cafes and restaurants. Awkward.
