If you want a shake, you go to Grill and Shakes. It’s in the name — literally. I asked whether they’ve been taken up on every flavour offering, and they indeed confirmed that they have. But do yourself a favour, if you go with your partner, get one and share? They’re massive and really filling and quite sweet. One between two would be more than enough. Otherwise perhaps you can skip dinner? They have a cool upstairs area as well, so head up and enjoy the outlook.

Amongst the chaotic clutter of bars and restaurants in Kingsland last night, we stumbled upon Grill and Shakes, after being drawn in by their promise of having 69 flavours to choose from. The location itself is a bit cliché with its neon lighting, exposed brick motif and couch seating upstairs, but it does deliver on its product offering, and the array of milkshakes on the menu list is impressive. The flavours are based on all your favourite local and international chocolate bars, with the shakes themselves just being a blend of the physical bar with other milkshake staples(). If you want a shake that literally tastes exactly like your fave choc bar, then look no further. Featured below is the dark chocolate shake, which being a dark chocolate addict, I quite enjoyed! For a no fuss milkshake, which delivers on its flavour promise, Kingslander’s look no further

Went in here for the first time to try out the shakes. Very disappointed with the service. There was one staff member who didn’t even bother acknowledge us and spent 15 minutes making small talk to the three other customers. Needless to say we walking out after being treated like we were not welcome. A real shame because I won’t go back and neither will I recommend the place to anyone. Another small business doomed to fail?

This is the first time went to this place. First off there is literally nothing to write about the décor. It is boring. The menu is bizarre, on one hand you have flatbreads with meats of various kinds. I had a meatball flatbread sandwich. It was a slightly spicy, super juicy quite yummy three napkin mess. The other thing that is the gimmick of this place was the gourmet milkshakes. I was skeptical that this would be good, it was awesome! So awesome I had another one to takeaway. I got a chocolate cake milkshake and it tasted just like a liquid chocolate cake. My takeaway one was an Oreo milkshake. That one was a bloody winner. The problem I have is that they are $ 7.90 each. I’m afraid but that is quite a cost especially for the size of the milkshake. Truth is I don’t know when I will go back, but I might consider if I’m bored of drinking NZ natural milkshakes which to be honest are bigger & compared to the ones I had, more chocolatey. Sandwich yummy, but messy. Milkshake, delicious just small & costly.

Think your local«kebab shop» with a difference. Grill and Shakes has the best milkshakes in town — and so so sooo many to choose from. My personal favourites are 100 and 1000’s and Banana Cake ! I love the chunky cookie bits and cake that you get throughout the shake. Also so pretty — and totally insta-worthy. The lamb can’t be missed — that yoghurt sauce matches it perfectly ! From the starter menu — the potato skins and popcorn shrimp won’t disappoint ! If youre not into dairy — they also have some pretty fizzy organic sodas that just the kind of «guilt free» sweetness you’ll be after whilst everyones indulging in cream topped shakes. The staff here are also so helpful, efficient and friendly — and the food always comes out within 20minutes. Definitely a local fave !

I’ve been to Grills and Shakes twice now and would go back again! The milkshake list is huge and they’re really good. I tried the soda’s as well but they aren’t quite as impressive as the shakes. Food was good, I had the flatbread the first time and the second time I decided to go for two entrees although one of them wasn’t available so I had to change my order which was a bit disappointing. The service was good but a little slow especially the second time around as we had a few more people with us. Would definitely go back again but probably in a smaller group.

The milkshake list is huge — I wouldn’t be surprised if there were 30 on there. Unfortunately I’m not a fan of them. Although a friend of mine had the hokey pokey and gave it a 9⁄10 which is a pretty excellent recommendation. Shared the mozarella sticks to start and was disappointed. Pretty tasteless without the sauce. They probably need to use a more flavourful cheese to improve these. I had minced lamb with the spicy sauce. It comes with a great salad and flatbread. It was fantastic. And the other menu items looked great as well. Next time I’m in Kingsland for a quick, tasty and healthy meal this is gonna be my first stop.

I don’t usually have a reason to find myself in Kingsland, but now I have 69! Their amazing menu of milkshakes will make your head spin, and will keep you coming back to try another flavour only to find they are all delicious! But if you’re also a carnivore like myself, you’ll find their charcoal grilled meats with such delicious homemade sauces, and tasty flatbreads are just as addictive! I’d also highly recommend their organic fountain sodas, I tried the Cherry & Pomegranate and the Raspberry Lemonade and they were so flavourful and delicious!

Full disclosure, a good friend partly owns Grill and Shakes, however we agreed that I would write an unbiased review and if he didn’t like it I wouldn’t post it, but I wouldn’t change it. So with that out of the way, we went to a menu sampling evening on one of the coldest nights in the 2014 Winter. Grill and Shakes has an attractive front of shop, with slightly rustic décor, Auckland’s Kingsland is not known for its modern appearance so in a way, it adds to the feeling you’ve walked in for dinner to someone’s home. That feeling is slightly marred by the massive grill you can see as you walk up the stairs(if you’re dining in) but at the same time its fun to pause on the stairs and watch a meal being made. Speaking of meals, we had both chicken and beef which were well cooked, came with delicious seasoning and arrived to our table with sauces that almost overwhelmed the palette if you had dipped too much. Honestly, it was sometimes hard to choose between the seasoning on the meat and the rich flavourful sauces that came with it. The cheese filled pastries were freaking amazing, and on a cold winter night I could have eaten those snacks for the rest of the evening, but it was not to be, we were asked to try the milkshakes … we had the grill, but it was time for the shakes. We tasted five flavours of the eventual sixty nine. Some were not to my taste, but my wife tells me they were delicious. The three that I did enjoy were well made, blended nicely and left me with a smile and a predatory look at the other tables to see if people had drank all of theirs. Grill and Shakes has a natural element to it, the soft drinks are not the normal commercial stuff, their ingredients are specially sourced and the flatbread dough is made and baked right there, every day. I can honestly, hand on heart, say that I will be back for the food and I fully intend to work my way through the 69 flavours of shakes in the next year or so. Without opening myself up to claims of favouritism, I think I might have found a new favourite place to eat. Highly recommended.
