I absolutely love jewellery! And what I love even more than jewellery is finding a shop that stocks really unique and amazing jewellery by New Zealand designers that doesn’t cost some ridiculous amount of money! And this is what I think New Jewellery is. Now don’t get me wrong I have a lot of respect for Karen Walker and I’m a little bit decked out in rings from K Dub, Boh Runga and Meadowlark but let’s be honest. Their stuff can get old. Some of it is overpriced and dangled on the bodies of every girl in Auckland. So if you’re not into that scene and you want something beautiful that really is a bit unique I’m sure you will find it here! There’s an insane amount of jewellery in here all categorized by the different designers. The prices vary a lot, which is good because amongst the great pricey pieces there are some awesome little finds. My most recent find was a tiny pair of skull earrings. Who needs Kdub skulls when you can have these. They are really gorgeous and only $ 20! If you’re walking up or down High Street you have to go in here!

Being a boy, jewellery doesn’t really appeal to me all that much. But being someone who appreciates design flair and technical proficiency, New Jewellery very much appeals. They have jewellery from local designers and do a good job of promoting this fact, with the pieces organised by who created them, and with a profile of the artist on display. I was particularly taken with some stuff by John Walters, who makes intricately detailed pop-culture icons out of silver. They also have a good range of goth stuff(skulls, scorpions, those weird pointy finger-armour things that Marilyn Manson wears sometimes) which didn’t appeal to me but no doubt will to some people. The prices range, so although you’ll pay quite a bit if you want a big piece, you can get smaller things like earrings for less than thirty bucks. The lady behind the counter was friendly, and was happy to let us try anything on if we wanted.

I really like this store because it has an interesting and unique range of jewellery. It’s just a small place but it has some really cool looking pieces in a range of prices, although probably more on the pricier side(it’s possible I only think that because I’m a student). That being said, there’s some expensive stuff and other things that, despite my low-income student existence, even I could afford. There are some colour-themed sections, but not in a tacky overpowering kind of way. The layout of the store and its contents is aesthetically pleasing and I’d happily go back again just to have a look.(In fact I have since been back and had a look for ages.) I don’t really wear a lot of jewellery but this is the sort of place I’d go to look for something(either for myself or for a gift) that suited me/some lucky gift recipient and wasn’t generic-looking. They also do piercings here for $ 15 each.
