I like Shaky Isles in Kingsland, but the woman behind the counter at this airport branch needs to learn some customer service skills. Thought maybe the coffee will make up for poor service… Sadly the coffee was scorching and burnt. Would never come again. Pity. The brand is now damaged to me.

I was craving a smoothie before a long flight and took the Kiwi one. Taste and price was ok for an airport. Unfortunately, envoronmental consciousness does not seem to be a thing at Shakey Isles. In order to prepare the smoothie, four plastic one way spoons, one plastic knife, three one way cups and an estimate of 20% of the fruit content remaining in the blender were wasted on the way. Furthermore the staff’s attitude appeared very demotivated.

Once you are though airport security you are at the mercy of food vendors. The food is priced like haute cuisine but resembles the type of food one might see and a government department morning tea. I was feeling depressed about paying $ 9 for a sandwich, so I chose a plain croissant for $ 4.50(and silently cursed the price). To add insult to injury the croissant was microwaved, it was pulpy and greasy and nasty.

The Shaky Isles group of cafes have great reviews and are always a stand out. The coffee is excellent and the food options are superb. Given this, it’s a little disappointing to see a lack of the core menu seen in other Shaky Isles outlets. A large selection of cabinet food is meritable given the audience it caters to on the air side of the airport. The café is slightly more expensive than what you’d expect to pay, and the service is a little lax, but the final product still does not disappoint. A good food and coffee experience despite the slow and uninviting staff, just a little higher of a cost than would be typical.

Costly but who isn’t at the airport. Long black is smooth and the soy hot chocolate came with a dark Whittakers bar melting it’s soul into the drink. Just over $ 18 for those and a gf muffin. Friendly staff makes it that bit better too
