Having never actually sat inside this restaurant, I cannot say much about its service, ambience or clientele. What I do know, however, is that their takeaways are absolutely delightful. I pretty much always have one of two things: Butter chicken – wherein the chicken is always succulent white meat in a gorgeous rich, creamy sauce – or Beef Saagwala(the fact that an Indian restaurant serves beef still blows my mind!) which, again, is fantastic… just try to overlook the fact that the dark brown sauce looks a bit like… y’know…And I love the fact that all of the curries come with free rice too. A meal for one is usually always under $ 20 including sides; such good value considering the amount that you get. The guy on the phone always says that it will take 40 minutes to deliver, but they are always quicker than that and the delivery guy is always friendly and always remembers me. Highly recommended.

I recently realised Sitar was the only remaining local Indian restaurant I hadn’t checked out. I’d heard good things so in we popped on a Saturday night. The service here is really good and we were seated with wine glasses, water and complimentary poppadoms arriving immediately. They are on to it with replacing cutlery too which is something that annoys me when it doesn’t happen. We ordered a crazy entrée involving chickpeas and crunchy bits of potato smothered in creamy tamarind and yoghurt sauce which was a taste sensation but left us feeling quite full. Uh oh. I’d ordered the Thali because I couldn’t decide between the Butter Paneer or the Dal and it had both. Plus condiments. Which you just gotta have. All was delicious although the curries were majorly rich which is of course how they are supposed to be, but the ghee galore was just too much after the starter. Really really good though and they got my «Indian Hot» just right — not weakly warm. There was no way I was fitting in the ice cream that was part of my Thali and so we rolled ourselves out the door. Sitar is great and you can BYO wine. Maybe best in Mt Eden…

This was our first regular Indian place before we scooted a couple of shops down to Nite Spice, and the only reason we changed was because Nite Spice dropped their prices and Sitar didn’t, and we were cheap students back then who couldn’t resist an $ 11 dinner. However I’m pretty sure they have since matched Nite Spice’s prices. I still come here every now and then with a friend, and I still love the atmosphere of the place. The staff are really friendly and seem to really care about your business, which I appreciate. They have a fantstic palak paneer, which is cheese and spinach, it’s delicious. It’s BYO, and on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays you can get a curry, naan and rice on special, I think it’s $ 12. Anyway, highly recommended!

Sitar in Mt Eden is the mid-point between Titirangi and Glendowie so we chose this place for dinner with our friends and had the most amazing Indian feast. Yes it is authentic, yes it is delicious, yes it is BYO, so it ticked all of the boxes. If it was a Monday to Wednesday we’d have been able to take advantage of the specials $ 11.99 mains. The kids were extremely satisfied with their butter chicken, we chose a few different variations to share amongst ourselves. The kids chose to walk to a local for an ice cream so that left the adults time to catch up. We’d all recommend Sitar in the heart of Mt Eden for delicious Indian cuisine.
