A solid Dominion Road performer. Designed to be a haven for spicy Chinese food and we were about 80% happy. Had the spicy vegetarian noodles, gong bao chicken and spicy shredded potato. The noodles and potatoes were very hot and very tasty. However, the gong bao chicken was a disappointment. This is a traditional spicy dish yet seemed to have no heat whatsoever. There were a few other dishes I’d like to try that looked good that other tables were getting including spicy fish fillets and beef in spicy sauce/oil. Service was standard dom Rd — the bare minimum. And they served standard black leaf tea instead of green or jasmine which was weird.

This review is based solely on the food, because Spicy House isn’t really interested in creature comforts such as décor or atmosphere. This place is incredible and I don’t think I’ll ever tire of it. The pricing is very reasonable, especially considering how delicious everything is. The setting is incredibly simple, no fuss, with all emphasis placed solely on the food. For this reason Spicy House is a breath of fresh air amidst restaurants that serve nothing but style and atmosphere with very little skill in the kitchen. Menu standouts are: Boneless Chilli Chicken, Lamb & Cumin, Fried Pork Dumpling, Garlic Pak Choi and Egg Fried Rice. This will set you back around $ 45 and can feed 3 people easily. Pay them a visit, keep your mind open to the quirks of the place and just sit back and enjoy the incredible food.

Highly disappointed in both the service and the food. The chilli chicken dish was ok but the crab dish we ordered was mostly salt, and the crab tasted off. The manager refused to admit that anything was wrong with the dish and would not swap it out even though we had barely touched it. We also ordered dumplings and they were bland; I’ve had tastier dumplings from the supermarket. Will definitely not be returning here again.

What a rollercoaster! Spicy House was down to a D, but is now back to an A hygiene rating, so we can all carry on as normal. Panic over, everyone.

Don’t go to Spicy House if you’re addicted to upmarket niceties such as décor and cushions. Before you sit down, a man will scrape the remains of the last set of customers’ meals off your table into a bucket. It’s okay. Don’t worry. Because soon afterward you will be served the best cheap Chinese food anywhere in Auckland. The meals come within minutes. I have waited longer for a Big Mac than I have for half my orders at Spicy House. They must just load the plates from a vat filled with chicken and pig. Despite that, everything’s always perfectly cooked, filled with flavour and a mouth-burning amount of chilli. The best things at Spicy House: Chicken with fresh chilli Pork hock Hot and spicy beef Green beans Many other things The worst things at Spicy House: There are no bad things at Spicy House.

When I first came to Spicy House, I was expecting a bad time. Not for any culinary reason, but because of the name. How could a place could Spicy House hope to hold a candle to somewhere called Spicy Joint? Luckily, I managed to put aside my overanalytic fascination with names and focus on the menu. Spicy House does all the usual dishes that Balmoral offers — which is to say, if you haven’t been here before, not much of it will seem very«usual.» I went for my usual favorite, the cold sliced beef in cucumber and chilli sauce — it tastes a lot better then the name sounds. We also had dumplings, a chicken dish full of super hot chilli, and some pork buns. Everything was good, and I left the restaurant happily spiced, with the endorphins from the chilli destroying any negative thoughts about the house/joint distinction.

When I’m after a fat attack, dumplings are always a go! You just can’t go past them. You’ll find on Dominion Road that there a are large number of dumpling houses, but which one is the best to go to? We’ll we came here the other night because our usual dumpling joint was far too busy and couldn’t seat us. We came to Spicy House instead! Its hard to go past your favourite place, but Spicy House definitely lived up to my expectations! The pork and chives dumplings are certainly my favourite from here! They’re great and freshly made outback! If you’re after a cheap and cheerful meal this is certainly the place you need to come to! With a large range of steamed, boiled, fried meals, your certainly going to find something to tickle everyone’s taste buds! Their bok choy is fantastic if you’re after some green veges also!

We happened upon Spicy House because Barilla dumpling was too busy — after seeing a line pretty much out the door, we decided to find the next busiest eatery on the Dominion Road strip and chance our luck. Our luck paid off! The food here is incredibly speedy, well seasoned and ridiculously cheap — I love it. My favourite dishes are quite simple — the chinese greens cooked in garlic, the vegetarian noodles and black bean tofu; particularly the tofu. My partner digs on the sweet and sour pork and so do my flatmates — there’s generally so many leftovers that they get to sample it too.

It looks like just another mid-to-low level restaurant in the swathe of mid-to-low level restaurants that is Dominion Road, but Spicy House is one of the better ones(good food beats bland presentation every time). And one of the more accurately named — Goddamn, their food is spicy. I recommend the chicken with fresh chilli, but with a warning — even at a place called Spicy House, this was one of the hotter dishes. Delicious, but painful. Actually painful. There are also other less aggressive dishes, so if you’re eating with someone who’s a bit timid about having their head explode then you can probably find something for them too. But I mean, you read the sign outside. You know what you’re getting yourself in for at a house of spice. And with that in mind, you won’t be disappointed. Plus if you have a blocked nose, it’ll sort you right out.
