This is a really nice lounge bar hidden on York Street opposite Lone Star. I came here with a friend a while back and was impressed. Small and intimate with some really cool seating options in the form of French antique looking chairs and sofas, Sugar Bar is really nice place to come to chill out for a bit and escape the busier joints that you find in Newmarket. The barman was really friendly, extremely talkative and now that they have completed their outdoor courtyard, they’ve stepped up their game a bit. Every so often they have live entertainment and if you follow them on twitter @Sugar_Bar_NZ they tweet out any specials, musings or goings on at the bar.

To me this bar always seemed a little out of place around the back of Newmarket, but with the new construction going on it finally suits it’s surroundings and blends in beautifully. They are very knowledgable about wine here, they have over 70 varieties! When I visited with a few of my girlies we had been drinking for a while and thought we had better order some food so we grabbed a couple of their artisan pizza’s to share. yum! We chose their olive one, and their margherita pizza which I always choose if it’s offered because it is so simple and delicious. I was not disappointed and neither were the girls, we all devoured them! Here they do these things called sugar sessions, I’m not too sure how often they are but they are at least once a week and they have a live singer and usually some drink specials. It’s a really great classy place to come when you just want some quite ones and don’t want to be disturbed by the wrong crowd. They even hire out their venue for private event’s which I am considering for my 21st birthday!
