Many of the aspects of Yum Cha may not sound very exciting. Sun World is always packed, it’s common that you must wait for a seat and when you do get one there’s a time limit due to high demand. Somehow, these things only made my dining experience more enjoyable. There was an air of excitement to the place that made it feel like an event rather than a run of the mill eating out. Due to the time limit I felt an unfamiliar need to soak up every second of the meal. Each dish was very flavourful, far more so than similar items I’ve tried at other Yum Cha. Staff were lively and quick, always ready with a fresh pot of tea or the dish you’d been hoping to see roll out of the kitchen. While lacking is interior design flair, Sun World has undeniable charm which is why it’s always busy and why you should give it a go.

Sun word yum cha is very packed during the weekends and when you go during the week, they don’t make as many varieties of the dishes that they make during the weekends. However it is a alright place if you don’t mind waiting for a while(10 – 40 minutes) for a seat. They also give you a time limit as to one hour, and when you do pass one hour they stop serving your table so you get the point. And leave. I personally want to take my time eating. Instead of being rushed and not fully enjoying the meal.

Before today, I hadn’t been to Yum Cha in well over 5 years and i’d completely forgotten how much of a gorge-fest it is. Plate after plate of tasty morsels all for only $ 18 per person. That shit cray. No wonder people are fiends for it when they’re hungover! Anyway, back to Sun World. I came here today for a lunch date with Dad, thanks to a recommendation from fellow Unilocaler, Arthur C. We arrived around 1pm and the foyer was packed but within 10mins we were seated and ready for the feast to begin. Dad’s a bit of an old hand at Yum Char so I left the ordering up to him. Without fail he always orders the pork buns and sticky rice but today we also tried: — Shumai — Spring rolls — Combination seafood dumpling — Steamed prawn dumplings — Black bean beef The pork buns were definitely my favourite — they had the perfect filling to bun ratio and the pork was sticky and caramelized. I was also a huge fan of the Shumai. The filling was moist and flavoursome and the casing was delicately thin. Perhaps it was because it was the last thing we ate and I was incredibly full at this stage but I probably could of done with out the spring rolls. They are huge and lacking in the flavour department. I’ve also gotta say, that they service here is great. The staff aren’t too pushy and when Dad put in a special order for sticky rice it came out within minutes. When we were leaving Dad actually realized that he knew the Maitre D from a Yum Cha spot he used to frequent in Onehunga called The Joy Inn. She told him she hadn’t seen him in 10years and that he had less hair now, which I thought was hilarious. A great end to a great meal!

Had a family lunch for our group of nine, and had an absolutely wonderful experience! We had made a booking in advance, and would recommend you do so also as it was very busy and the line was going out the door for those waiting for tables. We arrived early, but they still seated us as soon as we arrived– the staff were very friendly and accommodating, with most speaking some to very good english. The atmosphere was buzzing, with the usual hustle and bustle you get with any yum cha restaurant. The tableware and furniture could do with an upgrade, with some of the seats still bearing evidence of the previous diners meals– however the china and tablesettings were clean and acceptable. We arrived quite late in the sitting(12:30pm) but there was still a good amount of food being sent around. We started with the prawn toast and prawn wontons which were served with mayo. The prawn toast were a mouthful of crispy goodness, whilst the wontons were a little overcooked. We also tried: –Beef Rice Rolls –Pork Rice Rolls — Green Vegetables — Curried Fish Balls — Prawn and Coriander Gyoza — BBQ Pork Steamed Buns — Spring Rolls — Pork Pastries — Shao Mai Pork — Pork Dumplings –Prawn and Spinach Dumplings — Banana Pancakes –Ice Cream balls –Pork Sesame Balls –Black Bean Pastries Favourites were the pork pastries, steamed buns, rice rolls and the pork sesame buns. Coming later meant we werent able to get any Roast Pork or Chicken dishes as they had run out once we tried ordering off the menu. However, the prices for all the dishes were extremely reasonable(I have paid up to twice as much for the amount of food we ate at other Yum Cha establishments here in Auckland. We also ordered Chinese Tea($ 1/person) and Steamed Rice. The only thing I would have to fault our experience, was that at times the staff were too hasty with their carts(something you get used to– and is a regular problem at any Yum Cha you go to) and that the dishes were ordered from the kitchen were very slow to come to the table. Sometimes we had to enquire 2 – 3 times before the items were brought out. Overall, Sun World is an affordable, family friendly restaurant with a fantastic assortment of classic Yum Cha dishes. I would happily recommend this restaurant to anyone seeking an authentic and enjoyable Yum Cha experience in Auckland.

Best yum cha in Newmarket, but I fell in love with this place for Flat Family Dinner. There were seven of us and we pre-ordered two peking ducks. We took a bottle of wine and enjoyed the noise and bustle. The jelly fish salad is great, but if you’re with boring gwailos the lemon chicken will keep them happy(I had to admit, it’s not your average lemon chicken — the sauce is sour, tangy and not overly sweet). The vegetable dishes are freshly flavoured and aren’t drowned in salty sauces.

Things to order from Sun World’s Yum Cha menu: — Spicy salt and pepper tofu. — Prawn dumplings — Spinach dumplings — Ice cream balls — Fried rice rolls with xo sauce Sun World is a Chinese restaurant. It’s pretty traditional Chinese. I don’t usually go there for dinner(although I have before, and I recommend the prawn balls, the whole crayfish or steamed or fried whole fish), it’s more for Yum Cha. You’ve got to be a little aggressive at Yum Cha. If you’re passive, you could end up with no food. The Yum Cha at Sun World is pretty good on the scale of things. That spicy tofu is pretty delicious. Go with friends and order a bunch of dishes(including the ones above) and you’ll go away full and laughing, with a tonne of change in your pocket. Note: It’s difficult to split the bill there, take cash or have one person pay and pay them back.
