I love these guys. They always have a smile on their faces and are bursting with energy even on a rainy day. The tacos are the best yet in Auckland. They’re jam-packed full of flavour. You definitely get the spicy kick and all the ingredients are super fresh. My favourites are the beef tongue and the spicy chorizo. The ice blocks are made with the guys at Nice Blocks. It’s creamy and oh-so-good. It is perfect to have after two tacos, especially to quell the burning sensation from having too much of their Lucky Taco hot sauce. I am constantly craving these tacos. You can find them by checking out their schedule on the website. They’re usually in Ponsonby in the Flying Fish carpark or recently in Street Food Collective also.

Oi my gosh, this was exactly what I needed today! I have had Lucky Taco’s tacos many times, but today was the first time I tried the De Sesos(lamb brains) and Lucky Lengua(beef tongue) tacos! One thing I have always appreciated was that fact that their tacos have an amazing balance of citrus, creamy(I think it’s the avo cream/sour cream), spice, and savoury. And if it’s not hot enough the jalapeño hot sauce will do the trick if it’s not spicy enough! The beef was divine — whatever they marinated it in was amazing. Literally hit the nail on the head. It was juicy, tender, and slightly spicy. Honestly I didn’t now what to expect anyway as I can’t remember what beef tongue tastes like. If it were a blind tasting I probably wouldn’t have guessed tongue! The brains were… Interesting. It was kind of yellowish-greenish in colour. It was swimming in all sorts of greenery and cabbage though so colour palette-wise it actually complimented well! However it had sort of a weird consistency(what do you expect it’s brains!) and did not have as much flavour as the tongue. Love the Lucky Taco, love what they are doing. I’d go back for the tongue and Horchata(it’s a must and dials down the spice), but I wouldn’t run back for the brains. It’s novel though, so I’d recommend trying it.

My favourite food truck… worth the drive to Ponsonby, even on a rainy day(there’s a sheltered area). Sarah and Otis are super friendly and their tacos are really tasty, little food memories of Mexican holidays. Blackboard menu with lots of choices, today it was pulled pork(compulsory) and chorizo, topped with red cabbage, guacamole, pico de gallo and pink pickles. Help yourself to dollops of green and red sauces or their very own bottled hot sauces. Also, take my advice and try horchata, a lightly sweetened rice milk with cinnamon.

I rediscovered an old favourite this weekend and I’m happy to say its better than ever. From their food truck parked midway on Ponsonby Road(see their Facebook page for information about when they are there), Otis and Sarah put mucho amore into their products and it shows. Their tacos($ 8) are easily as good as any you’d find in Mexico and their horchata(rice milk flavoured with cinnamon) is incredibly refreshing both as a drink and as it’s recent incarnation as an ice block. The pulled pork and beef tacos are safe bets, but if you are feeling adventurous, then try the lambs brain taco that’s currently on offer. Grab a colorful stool, feel your fingers get sticky as you try to savour every mouthful without spilling a bite, tap your feet to the strains of salsa and watch the world go by…

Last year, I discovered The Lucky Taco at The Auckland Food Show and it is definitely one of my favourite foodie experiences to date! Delicious authentic tacos in either a corn or flour tortilla plus an agua de horchata(sweetened, iced rice milk infused with cinnamon) and you’re all set for the day! The owners(Sarah and Otis Frizzell) are so lovely, that you will definitely want to go back! The second time I encountered The Lucky Taco was at The Auckland Food Show this year. They had a great set up at the show and their tacos were just as delicious as the year before. I was also really excited to see Sarah and Otis again and even more excited to try their Pulled Pork Taco. It is absolutely delicious, a bit spicy, but oh so good! They also have a great little set up along Ponsonby Road which I have taken a long time to visit, however, three weeks ago I did! It was the most beautiful sunny day and I just happened to be walking in the area. I tried the ‘Breakfast Taco’ — spicy chorizo sausage plus an egg(ohmygawd delicious!) and a Pulled Pork Taco, which has a great kick! It will forever be my favourite taco! Sarah and Otis were as friendly as ever and there were many people queuing up for their tacos — you will definitely find out why once you try one!(Or two or three in my case!)

It’s really great to see food trucks finally trending in New Zealand. It’s just too bad that they’re a bit late… like 5 or six years??? These guys put Mike Van De Elzen’s truck to shame with an array of scrummy, healthy & innovative menu items on offer. As they are a food truck they move locations often(duh) but can often be found parked at Silo Park & major Auckland events around the city.

Popped down to the Lucky Taco’s trailer at Silo Park market and this place gets a tick from me. If you enjoy a bit of spice, definitely chuck some hot sauce up in your tacos! Tried four of their taco’s and would have to say the pulled pork stood out to me(once again, try it with hot sauce!) Would defs hit up this joint again!
