I agree with Leilei’s comment, funny that they serve coffee last, but I guess thats how you normally do at home? cup of tea/coffee at the end of a meal? I came into this place as part of my ongoing quest for a place to study and use free Wifi. I was initially planning to go to Atomic coffee across the road but they didn’t know their password! Environment– typical café, hip. lots of seating, a variety of large and small tables as well as taller bench top. Gets pretty busy around lunch time, a little noisy but then quietened down afterwards. Coffee– they get it form an organic farmer somewhere, and roast themselves. Got a flat white, was pretty smooth, a little burnt though. Food– decent selection of deli type food as well as cooked stuff. Typical for all the cafes. do catering as well. Service– friendly staff, helpful, Others– free Wifi, fast. Cons– no power outlet? I guess bringing your laptop and camp at the corner of a café all day is not as popular in NZ? overall, I thought was not bad, I managed to get quite a bit of work done today!

Dropped in for a coffee, as a means to get out of the sudden downpour of rain on the way back to the car. A quick glance at the slim pickings in the cabinet I almost thought about turning around and walking down to wishbone. We ended up settling for a coffee and a croissant and for me a tea and scone. I was buttering the last morsel of my scone as my tea arrived. And the croissant was microwaved(!) piping hot, which killed it for the hope of tender flaky texture. So it was a bit of a greasy mess. The coffee arrived well after the food had come and gone. The service was without smiles and felt robotic. At least the coffee was drinkable. A bit of a shame to be average given the excellent location and nice décor.

Shortland St Café is located near the top of the hill and seems to be a flytrap for corporates. I came here based on a recommendation from Vanessa M to try their cronuts. The recco was for the raspberry ones but I couldn’t go past chocolate and hazelnut! It was every bit delicious, sickening but totally worth it. Whilst, I was there I also got a salad to-go and I’ve got to admit, I was a bit taken back when they told me it would cost $ 1 extra to get a mix of two of the pre-made salads. As for the salad itself it lacked seasoning, the coleslaw was clumsily cut and the dressing too acidic. I would return for a sweet treat and a coffee but with so many fantastic lunch spots in the area probably not for lunch.
