The Yellow Brick Road Boutique

The Yellow Brick Road draws you in with it’s beautiful vintage aesthetic. Every shelf or display shows beautiful products, next to quirky items, next to silly gifts. All things that will enchant and encourage you to laugh, but also will keep you in the shop for a while.

Any store that has cute colorful retro styled cardigans in the storefront window is bound to attract my attention. Yellow Brick Road Boutique not only captured my attention but managed to hold it once I had entered too.
It must have been all the pretty shiny stuff that did it.
This is one of the only stores in Auckland that I have found that sells these ‘bones’ necklaces, bracelets and hair ties. They come in all different pastel colours and are super cool. I bought some in Christchurch a year back and have been looking for the same up here but have yet to be successful. Until now.
They also stock some great looking ‘display books’ — you know the ones, books with pretty covers and deep material that you keep on your bookshelf so your friends can see how well read you are.

This is a cute shop. No denying it. It draws you in from the road with some very cool clothing on display in the window, and a glimpse of the other treats within beyond.
However, my friend and I, who were walking down Ponsonby Rd at the time, and were drawn it to explore further, were both left gasping by the price tags.
A silly looking bone necklace that looked like it was for children or a mini dog’s toy cost about $ 30. As was a beaded friendship bracelet you could pick up on the beach in Thailand for about $ 1.50.
I did see a beautifully made, retro-​style sundress, complete with scalloped hemline. But at $ 260 I think I’ll break out my mum’s Bernina sewing machine and Vogue dress patterns from the 80s instead.
Some cutesy notepads and other gift items but still a bit on the pricier side.

A new addition to Auckland’s Ponsonby Road, this is a really cool shop. They have some lovely clothes for women; pretty tops and dresses that you won’t find everyone wearing because they aren’t mass produced.
There was some great wallets and bags (cute change purses started at $ 13) and a general array of wonderful gifts. Funny /​retro candy, stationery and jewellery are also in store. I found some cute hair ties with a gold bow on, two for $ 15 (there was also polkadot scruncies and fabric bow hairclips). I also purchased some daisy stud earrings for $ 10.
The shop assistant was pretty busy doing some painting (as you do) when I visited, but The Yellow Brick Road is definitely worth a look — especially if you are looking for a gift for someone.
Though you may, just like me, end up buying something for yourself aswell as said gift!

A cute and funky boutique located on Ponsonby Road, I’ve driven past Yellow Brick Road countless times and finally went inside this week. It’s brilliant! Beautiful 1950s and vintage inspired clothing — I loved every single dress and even tried on a few.
Yellow Brick Road also stocks an array of fun knick-​knacks, including magic sets, diaries, postcards, stamp sets and pencil cases. Everything in the store is made from lovely vintage and retro looking materials that provide a unique and homely feel to each product.
The hair accessories are also fantastic. Huge patterned bows and big flower clips — I was in seventh heaven! Likewise the jewellery is all really funky and bold and is exactly what every girl wishes they had. With a wall display of sunglasses as well, there really was no going wrong in Yellow Brick Road!
That having been said, the service was pretty average. There were two sales assistants in the store while I was there and neither of them approached me or even said hi. It wasn’t until I asked to use the changing room that they acknowledged me at all.
Service aside, Yellow Brick Road is a fun and funky wee store that definitely deserves a looksie!

The Yellow Brick Road Boutique is one of my favourite shops to get unique gifts for my friends or to just indulge and treat myself on some of the awesome stuff they have on offer. The boutique used to be located in Parnell, but now it is in a new Ponsonby location, which was probably a good business move — the Parnell location was quite tucked away off the street so there were less random drop ins by passers by. The shop is very beautifully merchandised; a really cute atmosphere with vintage inspired dresses, old-​fashioned wall hangings, pretty notebooks and stationary, and other various goodies around the store. A lot of the stock is hand-​made from NZ and international designers, and is surprisingly well priced (I got a leather clutch handmade in New Zealand for $ 79). The owner, Ruth, is very friendly and helped me out to find a nearby café for lunch. Their Facebook page always updates with their new stock that arrives regularly, so I’m sure if you popped in every couple of weeks or so you would find new and exciting cuteness to rave about.
