While this is not the best YHA I have experienced in New Zealand, this is really not a bad hostel. It needs a little freshening up but the rooms are decent. Walls are paper-thin though so if you are a light sleeper this might not be a good choice for you(as no hostel would be, probably…) The bathrooms were generally clean and the kitchen well equipped and quite lively. It took me a few nights to make friends but the atmosphere was very open and people seemed to talk easily. The staff was helpful whenever solicited. Worth noting that towels are provided for a small $ 1 fee.

I’ve always had great experiences at YHAs around the world, and the one in Auckland is no different. The building is pretty basic but it’s massive and our double room was nicely kitted out. The location is primo, near the top of Queen Street and an easy stroll to the CBD or back over to K road. The building might be old but the sound proofing is great. When we stayed it felt like we were on our own. But once in the kitchen and common area it was nice and lively. The staff at the front desk were super friendly and helpful. I was also really grateful that they gave us honest opinion on what activities we should do, helped the difficult decision making process a load!

My experience of YHA Auckland was through a very close friend that came to stay during the Rugby World Cup. I have stayed at the YHA in Wellington and by the sounds of what my friend was saying, our stays were pretty similar. The staff at YHA are super friendly and I imagine they are really great ambassadors for New Zealand when foreigners come to stay. The lobby area is really easy to navigate and is really welcoming. there is a huge range of leaflets and information on activities to do in the area and the place places to eat, visit, drink, shop and more. YHA has a slightly older clientele so is relatively chilled environment, in other words, if you’re looking for a 24⁄7 party place, this probably isn’t the place. That is, unless it is during an event like the Sevens or of course, during the Rugby World Cup. The rooms are simple and clean. They have everything you need and nothing you don’t. The kitchen and bathrooms are the same, although there are some options of ensuite style bathrooms. The location is smack bam in the middle of town so great for travellers without cars.

I stayed at this hostel while I was first getting settled in Auckland and couldn’t have been happier with my stay. Because it’s a YHA, it seems to attract an older generation of guest, so it’s nice and quiet at night but not somewhere you’d want to stay if you were a party-a-night kind of traveller. My two bed dorm was very clean, as were the bathrooms and communal area. The kitchen feels a bit dated but has everything you need in there and is always very clean(another good thing about YHA guests is that they tend to wash up after dinner!) It’s in a great location, right at the top of Queen Street and feels really safe as you need to have a key card to even get up to the rooms. The staff are really helpful too. They obviously know a lot about Auckland and New Zealand and booked a trip to Rotorua for me, as well as advising on things like local supermarkets and fun things to do in Auckland. Would definitely recommend this place for a novice traveller like myself.
