Wellington’s best new foodie secret. This small, sleek café is tucked in an alleyway off Dixon St and serves a limited but delicious range of breakfast(and other) fare. Deceptively simple in appearance, Egmont St Eatery serves coffee that’s delicious(even by Wellington standards) and the French Toast is a perfect size and accompanied by a harmonious choir of poached pear, stewed rhubarb, fresh strawberry, cream and hazelnuts. I look forward to returning to try the omelette with pecorino and truffle oil, the scrambled eggs with sausage it black pudding and the presses breakfast sandwiches that I spied at neighboring tables. Shh, don’t tell anyone about this place. It’s great!

Walking in to Egmont St Eatery, the first thing that blew me away was the décor, it’s amazing. It was all cool toned and dark wood, sleek and modern. I grabbed a table«downstairs» opposite the kitchen. I ordered a long black and then looked over the menu, opting for the Corn Bread and Beans as a friend had recommended it to me to try. The food was presented well and was delissssh. Huge portion size and was great to see a variety of beans used in their homemade beans, including black eyed peas — which I love! The cornbread was good, perfect texture but tasted a little different to what I expected. The coffee was good, if not a little bitter(but now I’m just being picky). The reason I’m giving this a 3 rather than a four is the staff, while super friendly and attentive when dealing with me… I felt the bromance that the waiter and chef had(more times than once) at their open kitchen was a little unprofessional and could’ve been quieter — there was plenty of quiet moments but a few too many disruptive moments. But this could’ve been an isolated thing to happen, just happened to be right in front of me. While I was eating, trying to enjoy a quiet brekkie alone. Definitely a place to check out if your in Wellington, I would recommend the corn bread + beans meal, but honestly the whole menu looked yumm.
