Figlmüller Bäckerstraße

I loved everywhere we went in Vienna, and we chose this place from Lonely Planet and my partner’s need for Schnitzel. We went to the one around the corner, as the main one was fully booked. There are two around the corner from one another. This one was far quieter and we were sat right away. The waiter was nice and offered us drinks straight away. I ordered a cabernet, which was very nice and going veggie the only real option was spinach dumplings in brown sauce and parmesan. We had a table upstairs which was nice and felt very relaxed. Our food came quickly and was well portioned. My partner really enjoyed the Schnitzel and although it is massive, it is so thin it didn’t feel to heavy. It wasn’t greasy either, and seemed to be what everyone else was having. My dumplings were absolutely delicious. Not what I expected, as they were round balls of potato packed with spinach, heavy, but tasty. The butter sauce was so nice, and I enjoyed every bit for it. I also ordered a rocket salad, which had a very nice mustard/​honey sort of dressing, and was very nice along with my meal. I would recommend this for meat eaters and if you are veggie, prepare for a delicious and gluttonous venture into dumpling heaven! Our meal was around 40 euros for two drinks and our dinners, do it is definitely a bit of a splash, but worth it!

Came here during the afternoon for lunch instead of dinner to avoid the wait and it was a great decision. My party walked in with no issues and was seated on the upper level immediately.
The menu has all of the traditional Austrian favourites but do as everyone says and get the schnitzel! The traditional pork schnitzel is pounded thin, to roughly the circumference of a beach ball before being breadcrumbed and fried to crispy perfection. It is served with nothing but a few refreshing lemon wedges but please do yourself a favour and get the mixed salad as a side. It is very flavourful and contains several layers of delicious surprises. Not your ordinary green salad! My companions got the wiener schnitzel which is veal and loved that too.
Service is prompt and courteous. Will most definitely be back again!

If you’re looking for schnitzel, come here. Come early and be prepared to wait in line. The salad is also amazing!
We walked in around 6:00 PM on a weeknight and had to wait about 15 minutes for a table. I didn’t mind, but by the time we were seated, the line was way out the door, so if you dislike waiting, keep this in mind when planning your mealtime. The menu includes much more than just schnitzel, but there’s no reason to try anything aside from the main attraction.
Our waiter was very friendly, and although he was busy, he was really nice in all of his interactions. I managed to finish my meal (many people don’t based on how huge this schnitzel is, but I can tell you, if you are sufficiently motivated, you’ll be able to do it!), and he was extremely surprised– when he saw my plate, he looked at me and said «I was not expecting that» in a joking manner. This became a running joke for the duration of my travels with my husband.
So: efficient service, centrally located, well-​priced, delicious food. Try it!

Ein Figl-​Ableger für «nur» Wiener wäre der Burner oder ein Take-​Away, denn: man trägt jetzt Schnitzel!

Le Figlmüller est une institution à Vienne car c’est là que le Schnitzel, spécialité autrichienne, a été inventée. Du coup, il est impossible, en période touristique, d’y manger sans réservation. Mais l’établissement a prévu le coup: quelques 200 m plus loin, on trouve le Figlmüller Bäckerstraße. Le cadre est moins authentique mais reste dans l’esprit de brasserie.
Comme nous le conseillait notre guide papier, nous y sommes allés pour goûter LA spécialité de la maison, et pas autre chose; apparemment, il n’est pas spécialement conseillé de porter son choix sur un autre plat de la carte.
Il faut dire ce qui est: l’endroit est une vraie cantine à touriste. Le service est assez peu aimable, un peu «brut de décoffrage»; le mobilier est celui d’un bistrot de quartier, et le niveau sonore est assez bruyant. L’établissement brasse du monde en permanence.
Mais goûter un plat dans son lieu de naissance, c’est la clef pour découvrir la recette inchangée depuis X années.
Nous avons donc commandé deux Schnitzels, sans salade ou pommes de terre suggérées en accompagnement; c’était midi, nous né voulions pas trop charger nos estomacs et l’appel du dessert dans un salon de thé à côté était trop fort. Grand bien nous en a pris: le Schnitzel déborde de l’assiette, et personnellement, je n’ai pas pu le terminer.
Il faut dire, qu’en plus d’être servi en part généreuse, c’est aussi assez consistant; il s’agit d’une escalope de veau, très fine certes, mais enrobée de chapelure frite. Ce n’est pas LE plat le plus merveilleux du monde, et je pense qu’on l’apprécierait plus en automne /​hiver, mais ça mérite que l’on y goûte au moins une fois lors de son séjour à Vienne.
Côté prix, comptez environ 14 € pour le Schnitzel (qui vous fera un repas complet à moins d’être totalement affamé !)

Who gives a crap if it is an alleged tourist trap, because my goodness is the schnitzel delicious. Having had a good amount of schnitzel in both Prague and Vienna, the lightness of the batter made the dish lighter and more flavorful. Served with the potato salad that was ok, but loved by my husband. While he isn’t into shnitzel, he got the tafelspitz and enjoyed it. All in all, so worth it. Get a reservation through as you will surely not be seated elsewhere.
I had original reservations for lunch at the Wolfzen location, but stupidly cancelled and couldn’t get back in. After going there and being turned down, we found ourselves able to get seated quickly, as the tables do move quickly. Good service and delish meal.

My parents and I came here for dinner spontaneously on Wednesday night. There was a bit of a wait but it moved quickly. We made another reservation for lunch on Friday at 14:00 and it wasn’t as packed but still pretty busy. We were seated on an upper floor. Our waiter was professional and attentive.
On both occasions, the food was done well. For dessert, get the pancake-​like things with plum compote (sorry, don’t remember the name). If I’m ever back in Wien, this will be a go-​to for me.

Really enjoyed this authentic meal that was also reasonably priced.
We managed to get a seat quickly and saw others were being sent to queue in the other location due to the place being full. The service was quick. We had bread waiting. At the table but found out it was 1.9 € a piece which I felt was deceiving (I rather you asked if I wanted bread — I did think it was complimentary at first).
The Wiener schnitzel was large in size and delicious. I also highly recommend their potato salad. We had the seasonal grape cider which was sweet and refreshing. I’d definitely return anytime in Wien.

I was having an allergic reaction and I came in the restaurant to request assistance with calling an ambulance, as it was in the same building that I was staying. The manager on duty was unwilling to help. Luckily a VERY nice waiter called me an ambulance and made sure it came. The waiter deserves five stars but the manager deserves zero. I understand I wasn’t a paying customer but it’s OK to have a little bit of compassion.

Eine typische Touristenmassenabfertigung mitten in der Wiener Innenstadt. Immer voll, wir mussten trotz Reservierung einige Minuten auf einen Tisch warten. Ober flott und nett, leckerer Wein passend zum Superschnitzel. Der Kartoffelsalat war auch sehr gut.
Lokal immer sehr voll, Ambiente daher nicht so toll. Fürs Wiener Schnitzel lohnt es sich aber.
Ich würde wieder dahingehen, als Touri.

Para os interessados em conhecer comida tipicamente vienense, não existe lugar melhor e mais tradicional do que este. Por conta disso, as vezes pode estar bastante lotado, por isso é sempre bom fazer uma reserva, somente para garantir. Porém, este restaurante em específico (existem dois) é maior e as chances de você não encontrar uma mesa são bem menores se comprado com o outro.
O atendimento é bom e de ótima qualidade, mas atenção aos que visitam Viena durante o verão, o restaurante não tem ar condicionado e nem ventilador, já que é um restaurante de 1905, portando pode ser bastante quente lá dentro.
Não deixe de provar o famoso e clássico Schnitzel (porco frito à milanesa). Não tem como ser mais vienense do que comer Schnitzel!

Very good meal. I had the Figlmüller Schnitzel with the potato salad (and of course a tall beer). I don’t think the Schnitzel is the best in town, but it is very good — and you won’t go wrong eating here. I really liked the potato salad. Some others have more of an acidic taste but theirs is a little sweeter. I thought it complemented the Schnitzel well. Made a reservation to be on the safe side and they seated me promptly when I arrived. Service was good.

Fast and friendly service. I opted for the Wiener Schnitzel (veal) as opposed to the pork schnitzel which is their namesake dish.
I thought the Wiener schnitzel was great. Golden, light breadcrumb crust. Tender veal perfectly done. The side salad was also tasty and an interesting treat for a non-​native. It included greens, a small dollop of potato salad, a small amount of coleslaw and some pickles too.
Add a beer and lunch was perfect.

Make a reservation. I cannot stress that enough. Everyone and their dog goes to this place all the time, ever, so you should reserve your spot.
I very much enjoy the atmosphere inside the restaurant. The bizarre layout somehow makes what would otherwise be a loud, tourist-​laden hellhole feel very cozy, almost intimate. The waiters do seem to be very busy at all times, which reminds you of how frequented the place is, but the service has never been bad in my experience. The food, likewise, is warm and fresh and has no mass-​produced feel to it.
My go-​to meal here is the veal schnitzel and the potato salad with pumpkin seed oil. I know this place is famous for its pork Schnitzel (all forty acres of it per serving size), but come on, while in Vienna, you’ve truly gotta go veal. It’s not as humongous as the pork one, but it is tastier and the texture is more amenable. You get two filets that more or less fill the plate put together. They look fat, but that’s because there are pockets of air between the meat and the breading. I’ve also had their very good cordon bleu, from which loads of scalding hot cheese ooze out when you cut into it.
The indisputable surprise, as many may have pointed out, was the potato salad. It is tangy and juicy and the potatoes are soft, but firm. Their Apfelstrudel, too, is quite competitive, and makes an excellent dessert with some whipped cream.
Do not hold off on this place for fear of falling for a tourist trap; the food is great and plentiful.

Top Restaurant, hier gibt es auch richtiges Wienerschnitzel mit Kalb. Das Essen kam recht schnell und ist sensationell. 19.50 € finde ich für die Qualität und für die Menge eher zu tief als zu hoch!
Bedienung war freundlich, ein bisschen gestresst.
Die Rösterdäpfel haben uns nicht so geschmeckt, ich glaub da war Anis drin.
ACHTUNG: Wer nicht 30 – 45 Minuten anstehen will, muss unbedingt reservieren. Wir wurden ein böse angeschaut als wir uns an der Schlange vorbeigedrängt haben und unsere Reservierung ‘angemeldet’ gaben.

Hier gibt es das für mich beste Schnitzel überhaupt. Dazu dann noch den Erdapfel-​Vogerl-​Salat … einfach nur köstlich. Die Kellner sind sehr nett und auf zack und man hat keine übermäßigen Wartezeiten. Eine vorherige Reservierung ist empfehlenswert und ganz einfach online zu machen zum Beispiel. Bei einem Wien-​Besuch ist ein Schnitzel beim Figlmüller einfach Pflicht.

I thought that this place was very touristy and a bit of a trap. So, I’ve avoided it for the first 2.5 years of living in Vienna. What a shame!!!
So, it might be full of tourists, but it is absolutely amazing schintzel. I’ve gone back a few times and every time the experience was absolutely great! Without a reservation, they’ve accomodated us (only 2 people, so they helped us out). The service, food, atmosphere… has been amazing every time.

Yeah, this is the place all the tourists go for Wiener schnitzel — for good reason. I had schnitzel three times during my winter trip and this was, by far, the best. Perfectly crunchy outside and tender inside. Bonus is the amazing potato salad. Get the mixed salad if you can’t finish a huge amount of potato salad because it comes with a decent sized taste of it. Service is lovely and the restaurant feels cozy. Add comfort food and you’ve got a win.

Uns wurde empfohlen zu reservieren, was auch über die Internetseite bestens geklappt hat. Wir hatten auf 13 Uhr reserviert und waren sogar etwas zu früh da. Sofort wurden wir in das toll arangierte Kellergewölbe gebracht. Wir fühlten und sehr wohl. Die Raumtemperatur war zu kalt. Die zwei bestellten Schnitzel kamen innerhalb 20 Minuten und wir freuten uns riesig!
Das Schnitzel war fantastisch! Die Kruste war kross gebraten und das Innere war sehr zart. Man merkte kaum das es Schweinefleisch war. Die Dicke war perfekt und es hatte niergends Fettstreifen oder Knorpelstücke, was wie auch nicht erwarteten. Die gebratenen Kartoffelstücke waren super als Beilage. Die Portion war gross, mit Beilage zu gross für zwei junge Frauen ;)
Das Figlmüller hat unsere Erwartungn erfüllt und wir empfehlen es gerne weiter!

Most people know this place as the original place of schnitzel and best in Vienna. Such a grande topic is debatable till the end. Whoever they actually offer great mittagmenus (lunch deals). They are great value for quality. Each week new menu comes out. If you’re curious about the schnitzel or want to try lunch menu go to this one as the small old one in the side street is over rated. Same thing happens just a couple meets down and there is generally space there for small group. I’ve yet to be disappointed with the quality.

I agreed with Andy — this place is pretty good and I don’t understand the reviews for this store is lower than the original store given that they are identical! We ordered the famous Schnitzels (with the potato salad recommend on the menu) and the chicken Cordon Bleu. The crumbs were perfect. We really enjoyed our meals here. Service is good too. b

Der Figlmüller in der Bäckerstr. hat ein angenehm, uriges Ambiente mit einem schönen Kellergewölbe, wo es sich gut speisen lässt. Die von uns gegessenen Gerichte waren das Figlmüller Original und die glasierte Kalbsleber. Beides war durchweg sehr gut, wenn auch die ganz, große Besonderheit nicht dabei war, was aber, denke ich, an der Wahl des eben einfachen Gerichtes «Schnitzel» lag. Die Portionen waren nicht nur beim bekannten Schnitzel, sondern auch bei der Leber sehr groß, man kann also von einem guten Preis– Leistungsverhältnis sprechen. Wer ein solides Wiener essen sucht, was nicht nur aus gutem Schnitzel besteht, der sollte hier einkehren. Wir waren vollends zufrieden, das beste Schnitzel habe ich dennoch bisher in Nürnberg gegessen, bis jetzt konnte dies mit seiner Senfpanade noch von niemandem geschlagen werden. Daher gibt es einen Punkt weniger, als die Bestbewertung.

Das Figlmüller Schnitzel ist kein richtiges Wiener Schnitzel, da es ein Schweinsschnitzel ist, aber diese Schnitzelformel kennt ohnehin schon jeder. Aber who cares, denn ich finde es geschmacklich einfach phänomenal, bin immer total erregt, wenn ich das zarte, panierte Fleisch in den Mund stecke, es schmeckt einfach verboten gut! Der Kartoffelsalat ist auch exzellent. Zur Wildsaison gibt es auch immer großartige Speisen, die Küche ist makellos, von der Suppe bis zum Dessert.
Im Gegensatz zum Ursprungsfiglmüller sind die Kellner hier extrem freundlich und noch wichtiger: nüchtern! (Der Figlmüller in der Passage zur Wollzeile hat mich nie wirklich zum Einkehren bewegen können, da gab es Kellner die haben schon gelallt und haben wankend das Essen serviert)
Die Einrichtung ist rustikal und unaufdringlich, es gibt zusätzlich einen Keller und einen ersten Stock mit Platzmöglichkeiten, also ein wirklich großes Areal und trotzdem sind Warteschlangen zu bestimmten Zeiten keine Seltenheit. Natürlich ist es ein typisches Touristenlokal, aber Touristen sind ja meist angenehme Zeitgenossen, sind durch den Urlaub meist gut drauf, verströmen Harmonie, positive Vibes…
Die Homepage ist auch toll, sehr übersichtlich und man kann schon von zu Hause sich überlegen welche Köstlichkeit (en) man dann später essen wird:

Am Flughafen von Wien angekommen, ist mir die Werbung vom Figlmüller ins Auge gestochen. DIE Heimat des Schnitzels? Okay. Muss ich sehen. Leider waren meine Erfahrungen nicht sonderlich gut.
Das fing damit an, dass ich mir — wie auch immer — beim Öffnen der Tür den Daumen zwischen Tür und Zarge eingeklemmt habe; was sehr schmerzhaft war. Den Daumen pustend und schüttelnd, das Gesicht schmerzverzerrt, wurde ich vom Kellner hochnäsig geprüft. Als ich kein Mitleid oder auch nur eine Nachfrage erhielt, meinte ich knapp «Eine Person». Ich wurde wieder von oben bis unten gemustert und in die hinterste Ecke geschoben.
Es sollte DAS Schnitzel sein und bekanntlich ist das Schnitzel nur echt mit Kalb. Also dieses bestellt. Dazu einen Salat. Überall um mich herum hatten die Menschen diese Monsterlappen auf dem Teller, ich nur zwei kleine Schnitzelchen. Dazu wird nichts gereicht. Nur eine Zitrone. Das Schnitzel war okay. Vom Hocker hat es mich nicht gerissen. Nur der Preis! Aber das wusste ich ja vorher schon. Nur nicht, dass ich das Schweineschnitzel hätte nehmen sollen …
Also viel Geld in einer sehr unfreundlichen Umgebung für ein so-​lala-​Schnitzel hingelegt. Einzig der Kartoffelsalat war lecker. Der kam mit einer Portion Feldsalat, übetrträufelt von einem sehr leckeren Dressing daher.
Ich habe Bekannten empfohlen, nicht ins Figlmüller zu gehen. Schade.

Figlmüller is a restaurant that is a must for every tourist at least once when visiting Vienna. Most of the people sitting in this place aren’t locals.
That said, Figlmüller serves a solid pan fried pork schnitzel called the Figlmüller Schnitzel. The schnitzel is big and tender, but it is not your classic Wiener Schnitzel, although they have that on the menu as well.
Since the restaurant is pretty famous and located in the touristy 1^st district, Figlmüller is more expensive than most other local restaurants serving comparable product. For example, Figlmüller is one of the few places that does not include the potato salad (or another side dish) with the order of schnitzel and the side of potato salad is fairly expensive EUR 4. Another place that comes to mind that does that is Schnitzelwirt, where schintzels are just as good (and big) and almost 50% less expensive.
Anyway, the atmosphere is typical Austrian and the food is good. Everyone visiting Vienna (or living here) should try Figlmüller at least once.

Ich sage es ja nur ungern, aber ich hätte mir mehr vom Figlmüller in Wien versprochen. wir waren in der Filiale in der Bäckerstraße und haben eine Woche vorher einen Tisch über die Website und OpenTable reserviert. Ging einfach, kostete nichts und bereits eine Woche zuvor waren bestimmte Zeiten schon ausgebucht. Daher: Unbedingt reservieren!
Oben wurden wir bereits freundlich vom Kellner in Empfang genommen und zum Tisch geführt, bzw. konnten wir uns diesen aussuchen, da es noch leer war. 20 Minuten später waren die knapp 10 Tische im untersten Raum voll. Das Ambiente ganz nett und rustikal. Das Essen dreht sich um das Schnitzel (das Figlmüller wirbt mit dem bekanntesten Schnitzel Wiens), aber auch diverser Touristenspeisen, also Gerichte welche die Touristen mit Österreich verbinden (Tafelspitz, Gulasch) zu doch eher etwas gehobenen Preisen. Das Schnitzel Wiener Art, also vom Schwein, überragt zwar den Teller, aber kostet auch ohne eine Beilage stolze 13,90 €. Der dazu empfohlene Erdapfel-​Vogerlsalat kostet 4,20 € extra. Schnell kosten so die Gerichte an die 20 €. Die bestellten Schnitzel waren in Ordnung, die Größe gut, aber besonders waren sie leider nicht. Sie schienen eher schwach gewürzt und ein wenig lasch, der angesprochene Salat war gut und die Kombination aus Kartoffelsalat und Feldsalat schmeckte.
Erfreulich war der Kellner, sehr bemüht, freundlich und er nahm sich auf für Fragen Zeit, trotz des relativen Andrangs. diesen Andrang sah man auch bei unserem Verlassen gegen 19:30 Uhr. Da standen locker 40 Personen in der Schlange vor dem Laden und warteten auf einen Platz. Warum der Andrang so groß ist fragten wir uns nach unserem Besuch schon, es scheint als hätte die Marketingabteilung des Figlmüllers gute Arbeit geleistet, denn mehr als mittelmäßig empfanden wir die Küche nun nicht und für die Leistung doch eher schwach. Nicht schlecht, aber eben auch nicht so überzeugend, dass wir das nächste mal wieder hier sein werden. Wahrscheinlich geht es dann wieder, wie ursprünglich geplant, zum Schnitzelwirt am Neubauring, den wir dieses mal nur nicht besuchten, da dieser Betriebsferien hatte.

Ich war schon so oft beim Figlmüller in der Wollzeile.
Das original Figlmüller-​Schnitzel ist einfach eine Schau!
Es ist vom Schwein und nicht vom Kalb und es ist auch nicht das beste Wiener Schnitzel der Welt. Aber nahe dran. Vor allem weil es hauchdünn ist. Es ist also auf jeden Fall etwas Besonderes.
Dieses Mal waren wir das erste Mal im Figlmüller in der Bäckerstrasse, weil das Stammhaus in der Wollzeile zu hatte.
Und in Zukunft werde ich nur noch in die Bäckerstrasse gehen.
Aus mehreren Gründen, die ich Euch gerne nenne.
Reservieren sollte man in beiden Filialen.
Ohne Reservierung muss man aber in der Bäckerstrasse weniger lang warten, denn der Laden ist viel grösser.
Und man fühlt sich hier nicht so getrieben. In der Wollzeile hat man immer das Gefühl, dass man nach dem Essen am Besten gleich wieder den Tisch für die nächsten frei machen müsste.
Und hier ist auch die Karte umfangreicher.
Ausserdem gibt es hier auch Bier, was es in der Wollzeile nicht gibt.
Dann war unser Ober auch noch wahnsinnig nett und ungespielt lustig.
War echt ein angenehmer Besuch!
Da ich ja schon unzählige Figlmüller-​Schnitzel hatte, habe ich dieses Mal die Kalbsleber gebacken probiert.
Ich dachte mir, ich nehme mal was, was nicht so viel ist. Man hatte ja noch mehr für den Abend geplant. ;-)
Aber drei Scheiben Kalbsleber, hauchdünn und total fluffig paniert waren schon eine Herausforderung. ;-)
Aber soooo lecker! Mein Spezl war mit seinem Figlmüller-​Schnitzel ebenfalls extrem zufrieden und seine Verlobte von ihren Spinatknödeln ebenfalls sehr angetan.

This place is worth the hype. Sit down to a schnitzel the size of a plate that is thin and tender and make sure you order some tasty potato sides. The wine and fresh sodas are lovely and the service is efficient.

If you’re a lover of wiener schnitzel and are in Vienna, this is a place you don’t want to miss. Actually, their specialty is something called figlmuller schnitzel, which is a fried pork cutlet that literally is as big as your plate and as delicious as it is big. The wiener schnitzel is no slouch when it comes to taste, either, but its size is at least a human portion, whereas the figlmuller appears to be something out of «Man vs Food».
We had lunch reservations, and were seated upstairs overlooking the main floor. The day was unusually hot (roughly 90 degrees F), and there was no breeze or cooling upstairs, but the cold beer, the excellent schnitzels and potato salad made up for the heat.
Our server was efficient, but not particularly friendly or helpful. Maybe he was an exception to the overall personality of the restaurant?

Warum war ich da noch nie??? Wahrscheinlich dachte ich als Einheimischer hat man viel bessere «Geheimtipps» als diese Touristenhochburg. Falsch gedacht! Das Figlmüller hat genau das was man immer hört — die ALLERbesten Schnitzel der Stadt! Genauso muss es sein — dünn, trocken und tellergroß und der Erdäpfel-​Vogerlsalat ist dann noch die Krönung.
Die Reservierung hat super geklappt, wir haben einen schönen Tisch oben bekommen und offensichtlich kann man auch ohne Reservierung kommen — viele Touris hatten keine und bekamen flott einen Tisch zugeteilt. Ok, vielleicht sollten man den Asiaten nicht beim Essen zuschauen, aber wir tun uns ja auch schwer mit den Stäbchen…
Die Kellner waren super freundlich und flott (glücklicherweise haben es jetzt fast alle Gastronomen begriffen, dass grantelnde Kellner nicht typisch wienerisch sind sondern geschäftsschädigend).
Sorry an alle anderen Schnitzelwirten, aber da habt ihr alle noch einen Weg vor euch!
Ich bin ja nicht der «Sterneschleuderer», aber alles unter 5 Sternen wäre gelogen…

I’m not really sure why the Backerstrasse location gets such lower reviews than the original one in the passage, but the food, service, and quality are IDENTICAL.
Figlmüller is the king of schnitzel. Instead of deep-​frying, their schnitzel is pan-​fried leaving it crispy but not greasy.
After living in Vienna for several years, I can tell you that their schnitzel is the best and their potato salad is (if possible) even better!
The Figlmüller schnitzel is the standard order (a larger-​than-​your-​plate sheet of thin pounded pork). This time I got a Wiener schnitzel (veal) to compare. Honestly, the Figlmüller schnitzel was much better and bigger. There’s no need to spend the extra 6 eur for the veal unless you don’t like pork (there’s also a chicken schnitzel).

Its A-​OK.
That’s right. its schnitzel. its not bad, its not really great (there are some great schnitzels in this town). There’s a line out the door, its huge inside (nice seating, you’re not on top of one another, at least downstairs). Exposed brick walls gives it that cellar fell, but not in a old moldy way.
No dark beer. Merf.
Price is relatively high. We shared one, one small beer, one nothing special wine, one little side salad (which was really small), total of around 26 Euros. The schnitzel itself was about 14 Euros. I could still eat after. Our other friend ate a whole one on his own (but then he was quite full…) I have a feeling I could have also, but not worth the money really.
I would not say the schnitzel was so enormous as they hype and pictures make them out to be. Also, thin meet, so not so juicy, and I do not believe it is the original Viennese veal schnitzel (although there is an option, normal size, about 16 Euros if I remember correctly).
There is a line out the door, so use their website and reserve online where on one page you see the availabilities of both locations (which are right next to each other really). its really a long one, still there until past 21:00 on an early week day. Service was at first a little huff and puff, and slow, but after we joked a bit (apparently they never saw someone put on so much lemon), then all was good.
Overall: well, just do it so you can see for yourself to check it off your to-​do list and have no regrets. However, its not a place I have ever heard anyone returning to.

What is the «I’ve got the hugest schnitzel in Austria» fuss all about?
We were recommended this restaurant by our hotel since we wanted to try the local cuisine.
My husband and I both wanted to try the famous schnitzel. This was the first time we hadn’t mixed and matched our orders when dining out. We ordered 2 of the same; 2 schnitzels and 2 potato salads.
The schnitzel was good., but got boring very quickly, and there was so much schnitzel! We would have been better off having a nugget feast (because thats what jt tastes like. chicken nuggets) at Burger King for a lot better price.
But, the potato salad was superb!
Don’t waste your time waiting in the line wrapped around the building. But if you must order the schnitzel, please only order ONE!

Das erste Mal waren wir noch als Wien Besucher beim Figlmüller. Nun einige Jahre später leben wir in Wien und haben selbst den ein oder anderen Besucher zum Figlmüller entführt.
Natürlich gibt es zu solchen Anlässen das riesige Figelmüller-​Schnitzel mit Erdäpfel-​Vogerlsalat. Ich bin kein großer Fan von Schnitzel, aber dieses schmeckt. Der Beilagensalat kommt mit steirischem Kernöl und ist sehr zu empfehlen.
Beim letzten Besuch hatte ich keine Lust auf Schnitzel und habe die glacierte Kalbsleber mit gebackenen Zwiebelringen, Bratapfel und Rösterdäpfel probiert. Die Leber war sehr zart und mit den Zwiebelringen und Bratapfel echt lecker. Die Rosterdäpfel waren mir persönlich leider mit viel zu viel Kümmel gewürzt.
Es ist definitiv ein sehr «touristisches» Restaurant. Da Reservierungen nur in Ausnahmefällen angenommen werden, kann es schon mal vorkommen, dass man für einen Tisch anstehen muss. Bei schönem Wetter ist das sicher nicht so schlimm, im Winter wäre es für mich ein guter Grund woanders Essen zu gehen. Da es immer sehr voll ist, ist es auch entsprechend laut. Also für ein romantisches Abendessen sollte man sich ein anderes Restaurant suchen. Mit den Kellnern hatten wir bisher weder besonders gute noch schlechte Erfahrungen. Mir kommen sie immer sehr gestresst vor, was leider manchmal dazu führt, dass ich mich fühle als müsste ich mich mit Essen beeilen. Ein Gefühl, dass ok ist wenn man Mittags zwischen der Arbeit schnell was isst, aber nicht wenn man Abends mit Besuchern und Freunden Essen geht.

Das Essen ist sehr gut, aber die Preise sehr unangemessen hoch. Und die Kellner unfreundlich — offensichtlich fand unser Kellner das Trinkgeld zu wenig, so dass sich dieser freche Mensch ohne eines Dankeswortes oder einer Verabschiedung den Beleg und das Geld gekrallt hat und damit verschwunden ist. Das werde ich mir merken.

Die Schnitzel sind sehr groß und einfach schmeckt.
Platz reservieren ist notwendig

Das Figlmüller serviert die Wiener Pizza das berümhte, tellerüberragende Panadeschnitzel mit der obligatorischen Zitrone. Unsere Freundin hatte glücklicherweise einen Monat im Voraus einen Tisch reserviert, sonst hätten wir uns auf eine min. einstündige Wartezeit einstellen müssen. Das Schnitzel war hervorragend: sehnenfrei, zart, mit einer feinen Panade. Der Wein war für ein Toristenlokal dieser Kategorie wirklich gut v.a. der weisse Prälatenwein bestach durch Ausgewogenheit und Tiefe. Unsere Bediienung war trotz des enormen Touristendurchlaufs freundlich, routiniert und humorvoll.
Fazit: Alles in Allem eine ziemlich runde Sache, wenn nicht die extremen Warte– und Reservierungszeiten wären.

Das Essen war sehr gut und die Bedienung sehr aufmerksam von einer Massenabfertigung war nichts zu spüren. Die Preise sind zivil und angemessen.
Ein Besuch ist zu empfehlen, aber vielleicht nicht gerade während der Stoßzeiten am Abend.

Lage: zentral im 1. Bezirk
Service: zwar schnell aber alles viel zu hektisch und ungemühtlich, man fühlt sich wie im Fastfood …
Essen: wer gute Schnitzel liebt sollte lieber anderswo essen. Die Schnitzel sind incl Panate ca 4 mm stark (wohl mit der Straßenwalz platiert). Geschmacklich normal aber kein REISSER. Beilagen ok.
Ambiente: ungemütlich, stressig und sehr Tourilastig.
Unser Fazit: in Wien gibt es genügend schöné und gute andere Beisls.

Kurze Wartezeit, dann ging es an den kleinen Tisch. Das Schnitzel ist mit 13 Euro nicht ganz günstig, aber super groß und lecker. Die Kartoffelbeilagen sind super lecker. Sowohl der Salat als auch die Rösti. Kostet leider extra.
Mit Getränk gibt man pro Person also ca. 20 Euro aus. Nicht günstig, hat sich aber gelohnt!

Nachdem wir ca. eine Woche, vor unserer Anreise nach Wien, erfolglos versucht haben, Online einen Tisch im Figlmüller zu bestellen (alles ausgebucht!), sind wir an einem Samstag Abend im Advent auf gut Glück ins Figlmüller gegangen und haben nach ganz kurzer Wartezeit einen schönen Tisch bekommen. (Siehe Foto unten) Wir haben zwar in die Karte gesehen, aber, wen wundert es, dann doch Schnitzel Wiener Art bestellt. Wir hatten nicht den Eindruck, dass hier verschleiert werden soll, dass das Schnitzel nicht vom Kalb ist, ganz im Gegenteil, man ist hier stolz auf seine Schnitzel die seit jeher vom Schwein stammen.
Nun also zum Schnitzel, es ist tatsächlich flach, tellergroß und zart.
Der dazu bestellte Kartoffel-​Vogler-​Salat (Kartoffel-​Feldsalat-​Salat) ist ein Gedicht und eigentlich gibt es nichts auszusetzen, bis vielleicht auf den Preis: 13,90 nur für das Schnitzel, Salat geht extra. Aber so ist das halt, Angebot und Nachfrage bestimmen den Preis, und Nachfrage ist eben mehr als genug da. Mir persönlich schmeckt ein Kalbschnitzel besser, aber das muß jeder für sich selber entscheiden. Trotzdem hat mir dieses Schnitzel sehr gut geschmeckt, wenn auch mein Mann mir fast die Hälfte abnehmen musste, es ist einfach zu groß!Daher gibt es die volle Punktzahl, auch für den fixen Service, der trotz des später einsetzenden großen Andrangs, die Ruhe behält. Fazit: Wenn keine Reservierung mehr angenommen wird, früh am Abend einfach mal vorbeischauen, mit Glück ist doch noch etwas frei. Und es lohnt sich.

Ein recht bodenständiges Lokal mit netter Bewirtung. Platzreservierung wäre sinnvoll. Lt. Personal wird jedoch nicht alles voll vergeben so dass man innerhalb kurzer Wartezeit auch zu einem Platz kommt. In unserem Fall dauerte das keine fünf Minuten.
Zur Ganslzeit stand hauptsächlich Gans, Ente und Schnitzel auf der Speisekarte.
Meine Begleiter hatten ¼ Gans mit Erdäpfelvogerlsalat. Von der Größe absolut ausreichend und sehr lecker. Ich selbst gönnte mir ein echtes Wiener Schnitzel vom Kalb, das über den Rand des Tellers hinaushing. Da es sehr dünn geklopft wird, konnte ich es trotz der Größe ganz gut aufessen. Dazu hatte ich lediglich einen gemischten Salat. Absolut empfehlenswert!
Die Nachspeisen «Mousse au chocolate» und Mozartknödel mit Vanillesoße waren beide sehr lecker. Nur der Mozartknödel war nach dem Riesenschnitzel vielleicht doch etwas zuuuuu viel.
