Macaroons have been the big thing for quite a while. I have tried plenty of varieties, and whilst Ladurée claim to be the best in the world, I must emphasize that nothing even comes close to Pierre Hermé’s in Paris. Ladurée is almost synonymous with the ‘macaroons’. The shops are always elegant, the macaroons and teas beautifully presented, the prices pretty steep. It is convincing in its presentation of itself as an independent patisserie/tea room, despite being a by-now international chain. On sale are very expensive teas(around 25 swiss Francs in Switzerland), amazing-looking but untouchable jams(jasmine and rose caught my eye, but were out-of-reach at 14 Swiss Francs)… I could justify taking one macaroon, and opted for the most exotic flavour-Rose petal. It was pretty delicious, not too dry, and melted in the mouth. I checked before ordering-they were all gluten free! One macaroon costs 2.50 Swiss Francs. The girl I am au pairing for and her friend opted for a raspberry and a coffee flavoured macaroon. Apparently they were equally delicious. This is definitely a place for an occasional treat, though I would feel bad spending too much money in this shop.
