Sam’s Pizza Land

The place looks nice like a real burger place. But once again, in Zurich, the quality of food disappoints me… and meat in my burger was just a defrosted piece of some kind of texture… Sad! Since it’s hard to spoil ice cream, my kid enjoyed ein kugel of chocolate ice cream here anyway.

I came to Sam’s Pizza Land… and ordered the wings. Probably not the smartest idea I’ve had, but hey, I was craving hot wings, and if I couldn’t get the ‘hot,’ I at least wanted the wings, dammit! Unfortunately, they were extremely soggy and not very tasty. The service left quite a lot to be desired as well.

Nun ja, die Einrichtung und die Raumgestaltung von Sam’s Pizza mochte mich noch nie richtig überzeugen…
Das Konzept ist relativ einfach: es gibt diverse Pizzen zur Auswahl. Dabei kann man jeweils zwischen drei verschiedenen Teigböden und –grössen wählen. Weiter gibts noch Salate und Pasta auf der Karte.
Bei meinem letzten Besuch wurde ich positiv überrascht: sehr freundliches Personal und das Essen war relativ schnell zubereitet. Sogar für die Pizza mit einem anderen Teigboden als bestellt gab’s einen gratis Kaffee… Nicht selbstverständlich in Zürich!

It’s quite unfortunate that I have an American boyfriend with an American stomach who enjoys eating things like Pizza and Burgers. The only things in his staple diet that I can approve of is Chipotle’s Burritos and In-​and-​Out burgers, otherwise his requests to go to places like Pizza Hut when we are in places like the Beijing airport leaves me rolling my eyes and eating solo, which i guess is okay as he at minimum doesn’t s shove the American grease down my predominantly Asian stomach that can only take Asian grease.
All this was just to explain how we ended up eating at Sam’s Pizza Land when we were in Zurich. Admittedly, we didn’t do our homework when it came to eating in Zurich. We also did not anticipate the Swiss Franc shooting up our butts two days before we arrived in town. Around noon on a Sunday, we got ourselves in central Zurich from Oerlikon in search for an open restaurant that’s not $ 50 a person with palatable food. We ended up at McDonald’s…well for the free WiFi… and this was when he found out Sam’s pizza land was down the street.
We went and checked out the menu: 20 to 30 FR for a pizza… shouldnt pizzas be $ 10 instead of $ 40??? I was hesitant as I neither liked pizza nor the prices at this place, but pretending to be a wonderful person and a compromising SO, I slouched my shoulder and dropped my head, and walked in with le sigh. The server does not speak any English, and we German. Somehow between my French and English, we got across the idea that we can order a medium-​sized pizza with half of what he wants and half of what I want. As another person had mentioned in the reviews, each pizza is named by a state or city in the US, but I have to add with no rhyme or reason, well except for Hawaii, cuz you do still have the typical ham and pineapple, which is what my bf ordered for his half. For mine, I opted for something that had onions and peppers or something — I can’t remember, doesn’t all pizza just taste like a lot of cheese and grease?
Anyway, the pizza was HUGE and really heavy. Very standard American pizza. After my bf ate his half and a slice of mine, and I had two slices — we still had another leftover neither of us can stomach. It probably didn’t help that we did get a large salad from their buffet salad bar for an appetizer. The salad bar choices were actually great and super delicious, at reasonable prices. A small salad is about 5 FR and the large about 8 FR. We walk away with damage at about 40 FR — I guess it’s okay for Zurich standard. If you are craving from some standard American fare, this is a good place.
P. S., in case my bf reads this review and gets upset, i should mention that he did end up stomaching that last slice, as he firmly believes that no pizza should get left behind.

I feel the need to update my review for Sam’s pizza land from 4 to 5 stars. After so many years in Zurich and after so many pizzas tried here, I can say that Sam prepares the best pizza in town; cheese is great, taste is very fresh and ingredients super tasty. All perfect, nothing wrong!
There were two reasons why I had given it 4 stars instead of 5 previously: the service and the interior decorations. I changed by mind in both aspects after yesterday’s visit: service was very nice and friendly and well, decorations… with nice service, also environment and decorations become thrilling ;)
Full 5 stars and no regrets!

With a name like that, how could an American resist? The pizza is great, and I thought it was clever how each pizza is named after a state. I love that there’s a small salad bar, which is not so common here. The restaurant itself has a bit of an outdated American style, but is very central and close to the train station. Prices might be a shocker for a tourist, but seem quite reasonable considering the location for a local. It’s quite small inside, so expect to be seated almost with another table.

Walked into this place once about 3 years ago and, within 60 seconds, I walked right back out, vowing never to return.
I’m proud to say, I’ve stayed true to my vow… I suppose I was fresh off the boat to Switzerland and not quite yet aware of the modus operandi in terms of customer service.
So anyway, I still remember how we were greeted — not quickly and with a frown, as if we were ruining the guy’s day by walking in. We asked if he had seating for our group. He answered in a baritone «NO!». And walked away. In shock and awe, we looked at each other confused… You know, sometimes I think they forget that without paying customers, they wouldn’t have a job.
On top of that, they have lame pizza combinations and a generally uninspiring menu.
This place wouldn’t have a chance in America, so stop pretending Sam!

Wer mag schon kein Pizza. Der erste Kontakt mit Sam’s Pizza Land war als kleiner Junge in den 90er. Da gab es noch nicht alles aus der deutschen Werbung auch in der Schweiz. Mit der Zeit kamen dann Sam’s Pizza, Burger King etc… auch in die Schweiz.
the real american Taste. Du hast die Wahl: entweder bestellst du eine Pizza aus den rund 40 verschiedenen im Angebot oder du machst deine eigene (geht ja nie mit kleinen Kindern dort hin =)).
Dicker Boden, Vielschichtige Belegung und né Cola aus dem Dispenser. So stell ich mir das in den Staaten vor. Die Einrichtung erinnert ja auch eher an ein Cindy Dinner (so vom Kitsch her).
Nun ja, die Pizza war sehr gut. Die Bedienung richtig schnell und das Portemonnaie ist auch nicht wirklich leer.
aja: und wer nicht so auf Pizza steht, es gibt eine kleine Auswahl an Pasta. Die sah jedoch nicht so lecker aus wie meine Pizza.

Ich bin nicht so ein grosser Pizza — Liebhaber. Meistens passt mir irgendwas nicht — der Teig, der Belag oder der Geschmack. Wenn mir wirklich ALLES nicht passt, dann bin ich im Sam‘s Pizza Land angekommen. Früher gab es einige Läden in Zürich, heute kenne ich nur den neben dem Globus. Spricht also nicht wirklich für die Pizzen dort, oder?
Ich kam aus dem Globus und wollte eben nach Hause gehen, als né Freundin von mir schrie: «Hey Späääätzli, huhu…». Ich drehte mich um und da sass Angie vor dem Sam‘s. Ich hatte Zeit und setzte mich zu ihr und da ich auch Kohldampf hatte, bestellte ich mir ein Pizza Slide. Und wieder mal wurde ich enttäuscht, wie schaffen die das immer noch? Der Teig war matschig und der Belag ausgetrocknet und fad. Es kam mir vor, als das gute Stück schon seit Stunden aufgewärmt wurde. Ekelhaft!
Wenigstens hatte ich wiedermal né schöné Begegnung mit Angie…

Och ja… Sam’s Pizza Land… was soll ich bloss sagen? Eine gute Adresse für den grossen Hunger ohne grosse Ansprüche. Ja doch, so würde ich es nennen.
Sam’s Pizza Land liegt sehr zentral inmitten des Grossstadt-​Getümmel, an der Schweizergasse gleich in unmittelbarer Nähe zur Bahnhofstrasse. Die Lokalität verfügt über sehr einfache und zwecksmässige Einrichtung. Alles sehr amerikanisch halt. Nicht schön, aber irgendwie cool. Im Sommer locken wenige, vielleicht sind es 15 Tische, im Aussenbereich. Dort ist es unter einem Schirm schön luftig und angenehmer wie drinnen, wo einem die Klimaanlage um die Ohren weht.
Bei Sam’s gibts Pizza. Pizza. Pizza. Und noch etwas Teigwaren. Und hallo, ach ja, noch ein ziemlich schönes Salatbuffet. Bei Sam’s sollte man Pizza essen, denn die Pastas sind nicht wirklich geniessbar. Pizza und Salat, das ist OK. Ein herrlich unkompliziertes Essen für die Hüften oder beim Drang nach etwas wirklich Ungesundem!
Die Pizzas sind wirklich gut. Es gibt sie in 3 Grössen (small, medium, large) und mit verschiedenen Pizza-​Rand-​Möglichkeiten (dünn, dick, mit Käse gefüllt etc.). Die Pizzas sind unter anderem nach Namen von bekannten amerikanischen Städten oder Staaten benannt. Zum Bespiel Pizza Alabama. Man bekommt die Pizza auf einem Brettchen im Pfännchen. Es sieht lecker aus, ist immer sehr heiss und schmeckt gut. Gut amerikanisch halt. Wie gesagt, man is (s)t hier nicht beim exquisiten Italiener mit den weissen Tischdecken! Tischdecken gibt’s im Sam’s Pizza Land nicht mal. Dafür gibts unkomplizierten Service, schnellen Service, gute Pizzas und lockere Atmosphäre. Und dies alles für wenig Geld!
Ich gehe ab und zu über Mittag ins Sam’s Pizza Land. Es ist nichts Besonderes, aber auch nicht schlecht. Manchmal habe ich einfach Lust auf «Junk-​Food», und bei Sam’s ist der Food gut und allemal weniger «junkig» als bei Mc Donalds oder Burger Kind.

Jaja ihr Sam’s Pizza Land Liebhaber, köpftmich ruhig für folgende Zeilen. Die Pizza ist zwar Pizza, aber kommt in keinem Fall an die des Italieners heran. Never. Und nein, auch nicht mit extra viel Käse oder extra viel Scharf. Keine Chance.
Ja, sie bieten ihre Pizzen in drei Grössen an. Juhu. Und ja, ich kann drei Teigvarianten wählen. Super. Aber das alles macht es noch nicht zu der perfekten Pizza. Für mich ist das zu amerikanisch angehaucht und der Geschmack, den ich von einer richtigen Pizza erwarte, wird hier nicht getroffen. Ein Pluspunkt ist, dass die Pizzas mit natürlichen und frisch zubereiteten Produkten hergestellt werden und keine Konservierungsstoffe enthalten. Aber eben, es ist American Style und Pizza ist für mich hald nur ECHT vom Italiener!!!

Various kinds of pizzas and an ok salad buffet, rather low prices. Overall quite ok — I was never disappointed. For me the place to go, if I feel like eating an american-​style (served in a pan). The crispy Italian style pizzas are ok too, but better at other places. Centrally located near the main station and next to Globus, rather small and closely set tables.

Pizza mit lecker Mozarella anstatt normalem Käse. Preise im grünen Bereich, freundliches Personal.

Als Student war ich da oft. Und da gab es auch noch viel mehr Filialien in Zürich (z.B. am Central, wo jetzt der Starbucks ist). Die Preise sind nämlich recht gut, die Pizza ist auch nicht allzu schlecht.
Meine Tipps:
— Salat nehmen, es hat nämlich ein Salat-​Buffet und man kann gut zuschlagen (nötigenfalls auch mehrmals.)
— unbedingt den dünnen Boden nehmen. Der dicke Teigboden macht die ganze Pizza so schwabbelig. Ausserdem ist die Pizza mit dünnem Boden viel grösser als die mit dickem.
Das Lokal hier nahe Globus ist allerdings recht eng, meistens fast voll und ist nicht wirklich gemütlich.
