Uto Kulm

You would think that because this restaurant sits at one of best spots in the city, that is, at the top of Zurich (and locals and visitors alike flock there for the incredible views), the prices would be outrageous. But actually, it’s not bad and the restaurant is enormous. It looked like there was a sizable dinner buffet with chicken, sausages, pasta, salad, etc. (perhaps for the hotel guests). The menu is pretty extensive and my large party got a variety of things, cordon bleu (which came on the bone) on a bed of saffron risotto, pasta, the large cheese burger, and everything was very tasty. I didn’t order the wine myself, but I imagine it’s pretty pricey. Desserts, I didn’t care for, but they did have this classic meringue dessert from Bern.
There are several dining rooms, all with great views. There are just as many tables outside on the huge deck that overlooks both the lake and the other side of the mountain, I believe overlooking Zug (or the neighboring area). The sunsets here are breathtaking. I’ve been to Uto Kulm on both cloudy and sunny days and the view is still wonderful when there are lots of clouds.
The older waitress who tended to us was amazing. I’m sure she speaks several languages but it was clear she spoke Swiss German, German and English at the very least. You’re free to go outside and come back in however many times you want but I was there when it was not so crowded. (There was even a romantic date going on at one of the tables and the wait staff had strewn fresh rose petals on the white tablecloth!)
I would highly recommend hiking, running or taking the train up here. If you take the S-​bahn train to Uetliberg, you walk up some stairs and then «hike» up a small hill before you get to the front door of the restaurant. Not sure if there is handicap access from the station to the hotel/​restaurant so I would call the hotel/​restaurant to find out if you have any special needs!

We came here during on New Year’s as our last group dinner in Europe. An absolutely gorgeous winter scenery trek up the mountain before you reach the hotel restaurant. Everything surrounding it was beautiful, all framed by tall trees covered in snow and lit by moose lamps. The surrounding area has many hiking paths and in the winter a dedicated sledding area. People sled late into the night.
When we reached the peak and dined at the restaurant, it all went down hill.

Cheese fondue is a big bowl of liquid cheese, definitely more than a cup of melted cheese per person.. If we had to redo, just get cheese fondue for max 3 people. It’s fine the first 3 bites, but my tongue is bored and it doesn’t come with anything else to dip except the complimentary bread. The bread is yummy.

Tolle Ambiente, wunderschöné Aussicht, immer super feines Essen, die Preise sind entsprechend teuer aber es lohnt sich auf jeden Fall!

Wir sind den Berg hochgewandert (wie wahrscheinlich viele) und wurden vom Empfang sehr herablassend mehrfach gefragt in wir denn auch wirklich essen würden und nicht lieber in den Biergarten wollten. Kein guter Start. Das Restaurant ist Top gelegen, ohne Frage, der Weinkeller vorzeigbar mit einer Vorliebe für Rothschild, die Karte liest sich gut (trotz der auch für Zürcher Verhältnisse hohen Preise), das Essen wird toll präsentiert, enttäuscht aber die Erwartungen sehr. Kein kulinarisches Highlight, auf der Berghütte einen Berg weiter haben die Rösti wesentlich besser geschmeckt. Eine Gurkensuppe war lasch und die Dorade schon aus (um 13uhr!). Naja der Blick ist wirklich einzigartig und die Wanderung macht Spaß, allein schon deshalb kommen wir sicher wieder. Wahrscheinlich dann mit Vesper im Gepäck.

Alleine die Lage ist schon einen Besuch wert. Man sitzt buchstäblich auf dem «Top of Zurich» und kann während dem Essen einen Blick auf die Stadt und den See werfen. Vor allem im Sommer super!

Nach guten 2 Stunden durch Wald, Eis und Schnee stand ich dann auf dem Gipfel des Ütliberges. Top of Zürich nennt sich dann dieser Punkt mit Hotel und Restaurant. Der grosse Wintergarten bietet einen genialen Blick auf die Stadt so man dann einen Fensterplatz bekommt. Am Wochenende sollte man dann schon schnell mal anrufen und reservieren. Service war freundlich, routiniert und aufmerksam. Essen war gut, hier und da vielleicht etwas teuer geraten. Vegigericht, Bündner Pizokels mit Lauchgemüse für gute 33, — CHF. Kürbiscremesuppe für 9,50, — CHF okay aber auch geschmacklich nur okay… ja nun aber wie gesagt der Ausblick entschädigt für vieles.
Wer Menschenaufläufe verhindern möchte sollte sich dieses Lokal nicht gerade für Wochenenden oder Ferienzeiten aussuchen. Aber ausprobieren sollte man es in jedem Fall.
