Old-world elegance(14-foot ceilings) with new-world conveniences(wi-fi and Grohe bath fixtures), the Beseda is on a quiet street between the old & new towns, an easy walk to almost anywhere. People at the reception desk spoke good English. The engineer in me was fascinated by the walls, looked to be almost 3 feet thick. 3.5 stars, rounding up. My single room was long, narrow and quite comfortable, with old-fashioned double windows that you could actually open wide. Didn’t hear neighbors or traffic noise. The bed was great, the Wi-Fi was dependable, but the television was pathetic; that didn’t matter, I didn’t come to Prague to watch TV. I didn’t see any evidence of air-conditioning, even with the floor fan in my room it could get rather warm here in the summer. Had a mini bar with high prices. Lacked a bedside clock. I enjoyed a generously sized brand-new bathroom with those fancy German faucets, endless hot water too. Only problem was that the shiny shower stall only had a glass panel on half of it, weird, so even being careful I flooded the floor every time. Outstanding buffet breakfast! Huge spread included yogurt and cereals, sliced meat and cheese, bread and rolls, cooked vegetables and sausages, fresh fruit, juices, and one of those million-dollar coffee machines that makes you an espresso, a cappuccino, or whatever you like at the press of a button. Closest tram stop is Lazarská, which is served by lines 3, 9, 14 and 24. Formerly known as Hotel Christie, and judging from signs in the rooms you could be forgiven for thinking that’s still the name :-) I’m a fan despite a few carpet stains and wall scrapes. I had to prepay to get a good rate that included a multi-night discount.
