I started lessons with Jake about 3 months ago. I’ve been playing guitar for about 20 years, but I am mostly self taught with some pretty bad habits and honestly no sense of rhythm whatsoever. I also wanted to break out of ruts and ‘expand horizons’ regarding improvisation. The lessons have been fantastic. Jake has tailored perfectly for my skill level. What that means to me is that I’m pushed outside of my own comfort zone, but the goals are obtainable with good practice habits. Jake is very easy to get along with and extremely patient with me regarding the bad habits that I’ve taught myself. Those habits have been setting in deeply for over 20 years and Jake has been great and helping me recognize what I need to do to break them. If you want to learn guitar or if you know how to play a bit and want to push your abilities, then contact Jake. He’s made the whole experience enjoyable for me.

I had taken lessons for a couple years before coming to Jake. I have made more progress in the few months I have been here than the years I spent elsewhere. Jake makes the guitar easy to understand. I enjoy playing now more than I ever have and look forward to my lesson every week. If you are looking for the best instruction you can get in Austin this is the place.

So I have been taking lessons with Jake for about a year now. He has a truly great teaching style that keeps it fun and relaxed. You wont spend hours studying sheet music(most has errors anyway) but learn the why behind the songs. He helps teach when process that went into writing the song so you can learn it easier and also how to adapt that style to your own playing. This really helps so that you don’t just«learn a list of songs» but learn guitarists tendencies. Anyone can learn to play a Clapton song, but can you add in a «Clapton sounding» solo to something new? He keeps the atmosphere relaxed and has a world of patience with students. It feels more like sitting with a friend who is patiently showing you a new trick than a «lesson». Jake is a stellar performer for many years locally and brings that experience to help you learn. You learn what interests you instead of being plugged into a formula of what you«should play». There hasn’t been anything that I can throw at Jake he hasn’t been able to show me. Also, it will help expand your base of music and learn more about some hidden gems of artists you may not know. The last thing I will say is about the price. Jake isn’t the cheapest in town, but also far from the most expensive. You could pick someone, but is he playing on the corner of Social trying to make change or headlining Antone’s? If you haven’t, just run a Google search on Jake Andrews. That should give you plenty to show you who he is. This is a case I really feel you get more than you pay for. I would easily place him with anyone for instruction. If I didn’t I sure wouldn’t be going to him this long. I would recommend him without reservation. Vintage amps, cool guitars, killer tone, and a nice guy to show you how to put it all together –have what more could you ask for?

Jake is a great teacher. As an adult that has never before played an instrument, Jake was very patient with me. He has taught me a lot considering my lack of experience with musical instruments. I am very surprised at the level of my own skill in the short amount of time that I have been taking lessons. The lessons are also fun and entertaining, which was a real concern for me. I was not interested in sucking at something and having my lessons be a ‘chore.’ I am learning a lot and having fun. I definitely recommend Jake Andrews as a guitar instructor.

Jake has been teaching my 9 year old daughter guitar for over 8 months and she has made tremendous advances in her playing. Jake is a patient, professional teacher and I(and I’m sure my daughter) would highly recommend him.
