On The Border

I’ve been here a couple of times and why I come back is beyond me. After this visit it’ll be my last! Service is sooooo sssllllloooowwww! The waitress we had spent more time at the bar talking to every one than taking orders! There were three other customers that also walked out due to the lack of attention by our waitress. She spent more time talking about here body piercing than attending the customers at the tables. This was the second time we’ve walked out of this place due slow service. It’s not just her it’s been the last two servers and two times we’ve been here

David gave great service, but the food was lacking. Beans and rice had a skunky taste. Shredded chicken tasted awful. Grilled chicken for fajitas was good. Shredded beef was dry. Kids meal tortilla selection was lacking. Next time I’ll do to old town.

Was at this location Wednesday night with some co workers and I love on the borders happy hour and chips and salsa but our waiter was horrible I had never been so disappointed if they would of been busy it would of been ok but they were not busy at all. I usually sit at the bar and get fast and good service this time was at a table near the bar and never making that mistake twice i hope to re do this review with something a little more positive. Watermelon margarita was great though ! I give that drink four stars on its own service was horrible so unfortunately I am giving them just two starts come on OTB customer service is everything ! Perhaps take some pointers from the Mira Mesa location from frank or Rick. ;)

Went out to enjoy some happy hour drinks only to be greeted by slow service. Our poor waitress was taking care of the outdoor patio area and the bar area – both which were full! One of the bus boys was kind enough to pick up the slack and brought us chips and salsa constantly. The two did their best to be on top of our orders and serve our food in a timely manner. They were great!
Not sure if it was just one of those nights, but the management at this location needs to make sure their staff is supported!

One of the worst waitresses ever!!! Her attitude was unbelievable and her sarcasm wasn’t even funny. We were a party of 10 for a birthday dinner and obviously we started asking for drinks. When we all got ID’d she would ask for everything that was on your ID. I get it that they have problems with fake id’s and underage drinking but she was super rude about it, she had no charisma or I don’t think she has a clue of what good customer service is. Any who so you can only imagine 9 of us got drinks and she asked all of us everything that was stated on our ID. I’ve never had anyone ask that many questions especially at a restaurant. We ordered our food and i took like 40 mins or more. It wasn’t even that full since it was around 10pm. My friend then asks for another margarita and she said I’ll put the order in once you’re finished with that one like WTF!!! who does that hahaha. He was more than half way done and since they take like 15−20mins to get the drinks out why not order a few mins before? We get our food and I paid 20 dlls for the fajita platter. I only get 3 shrimps 4 small pieces of chicken and steak. In the picture it looked bigger and worth 20 dlls. At this point I had it with the waitresses not to mention she had the bitchiest face I’ve ever seen. I get it sometimes it’s a hard day at work but it seemed that she was bitchy, I don’t know how she still has a job there. We then ask for watermelon margaritas, and they apparently ran out of the mix. Never again are we coming here. I could go somewhere else and feel more welcome without the waiter or waitress telling me what i can and cannot order.

Came with a friend for Happy hour! best margaritas!!! they are pretty big and oh so good! our waiter was really nice and was really good about checking up on us. Will be coming back soon!

And love even MORE that I almost always get carded here at 35+!
They can be a bit slow at times but grasp the concept of teamwork that lacks in a lot of restaurants!

My friend and I love coming here for happy hour! They’re beers and their food items are reasonably priced for happy hour. Only knock is they charged my friend $ 1.60 for a side of sour cream… lame…otherwise we love coming here!

It’s been several years since we had a meal at On the Border because, frankly, the food was never that good — and when their corporate organization went through financial difficulties, the food quality declined dramatically. Fast forward to 2016, we thought we’d give it a try again. Very disappointed. Again.
My wife order three spinach-​mushroom enchiladas — spinach and cheese, yes, not a mushroom to be seen. Kinda pricy for spinach and cheese only stuffed into a tortilla. I ordered the Chicken Bordurrito and came away thinking why? Very little chicken and all of it without flavor, I thought I hit the jackpot when I found three little cubes of meat in one corner of the burrito. Seriously, it was merely a tortilla filled with beans and rice, a few red peppers, a few onions, and only a flavorless trace of chicken cubes.
Two inches at one end of the burrito was actually empty, two-​and-​a-​half inches at the other end was also empty. When the waiter came to clear our dishes, he asked if I wanted a container for the rest of my meal. When I showed him the remains were tortilla only, neither with even a residual stain of beans and rice, he just laughed and said, oh, sorry. Taco Bell and Del Taco food are nothing to write home about, but they do a much better job than On the Border in at least delivering a consistent product with some measure of flavor.
The only reason I gave them two stars is because their chips and salsa were quite tasty. If they could only translate that quality and taste into their entrees. «Meh. I’ve experienced better.»

This is my go to for Happy Hour, especially on Tuesdays and Fridays. The mojito, mango or strawberry, is delicious. The appetizer choices are great. I recommend the chicken flautas. It’s also a great place to celebrate birthdays with family or just hang out with your friends.

Two stars for the food however I wouldn’t give none of it wasn’t good. I was refused a high chair for the first time due to a «safety/​fire hazard» I’ve never had a business tell me something so petty like this before. I’m going to assume they have had an accident before with a baby getting hurt. I know for sure that the walk way that was by us was not small and servers would be able to get around her. We won’t be back due to a refusal of a high chair.

The food was good. Our waiter, Tyler was excellent. Price was fair and the food was filling. We had three complimentary orders of chips and salsa brought to us before our meals even came out. The chips were nice and crunchy and the salsa wasn’t too spicy. It isn’t that the food took a long time to come out, we were just really hungry. I had the lunch plate with two beef tacos, refried beans, rice and a coke/​dr. pepper for $ 12. I was too full to order a dessert but will try that next time. I will be going back.

Excellent happy hour on a Sat afternoon. Restaurant is well maintained and seating arrangement perfect for watching TV or socializing.
HH prices and food portions are equally matched and food well prepared. Drink prices are very reasonable and all drinks prepared very well.
Sam is a great waitress and all others there who assisted her were equally as good.
Highly recommend this restaurant to locals or others passing through San Diego area.

Great spot for drinks, dinner, and appetizers. I have always enjoyed the conversation at the bar. They don’t usually have drama. Come on in and have a beer with me!
The regulars are consistent and awesome to hang out with.
Dawn, Jorge, Cesar, Danny, Derek, Christine, Megan, Bailey, Omar, Matt, Tavia, Omid, and so many other great people working here. Keep up the great work!

Upon entering we were greeted by a very nice staff that were attentive, helpful and great at their job.
The food is not what I would call authentic Mexican by any stretch.
I had the corn tortilla quesadilla which was pretty boring. Not good but not bad. The chips and salsa are awesome but the nacho plate was full of limp chips and scraps of meat with a few chunks of unmelted cheese here and there.
Overall, I guess it’s an ok place to meet a bunch of people but the food is for the most part nothing exciting.

Great margaritas and the best chips and salsa! They have lots of happy hour specials ALL DAY on Sundays and Mondays in the bar area. The bartenders and servers are always so prompt and friendly. Megan is the absolute greatest! She’s quick to refill your drinks/​chips and get you whatever you need. I usually get the street tacos with carnitas or steak. The meat is always juicy and marinated and the portions are big. I love that this location is in the mall parking lot so I could stop by and grab a drink after a day of retail therapy. What more can a girl ask for?

Came back here to give this place another try.
The service was much better than my previous visit. The place seemed much busier too.
Lukas our server was very attentive and followed up with us several times during our dinner. He came out with our drinks just as fast as we were drinking them. He came out with extra salsa so that we can enjoy our chips.
When I asked for a replacement fork — as it was dirty, he came right away.
I appreciate servers that care about providing service, not just bringing out your food and drink.
As Unilocal doesn’t allow 3.5 Stars, I’m revising my rating of this place to 3.
If you like Tacos, this is the place to visit on a Tuesday. Their bar and patio sections were full of happy looking customers.

Food was only average, the wait was HORRIBLE
Over thirty minutes which is unacceptable at 230/​3pm
It was as if the entire kitchen staff was on break since all tables in the bar started to get food at the same time, even those that ordered 15 minutes or so after we did
There’s too many excellent Mexican Restaurants here in Escondido /​San Diego for poor kitchen service
Our waitress was ok, but still we waited over 10 minutes for Mercedes Margarita which tasted like mix only. Maybe half price Half the amount of Tequila.
Won’t be back and I don’t recommend this place

If this is Tex Mex I don’t get it, the food is not very good at all. It felt like el pollo loco with a server. I am not a fan of their food, I would seriously avoid this place and find a real Mexican restaurant. In addition to weird food they are cranking the hits of 1985, not sure what vibe they are going for here.

3 things I come here for…
The drinks, the queso & the flan.
Everything else is just «blah». Just a more expensive TacoBell. But it’s a great spot for happy hour after work and late happy hour to hang out at night. Kids aren’t allowed in the bar area but they are allowed in the patio. Which is nice because mom and dad can still enjoy Happy Hour!
We were there last night. The patio was packed, but our server was «on it». Megan (I think is her name) was all over the place and still had super speedy service. We appreciated that so much!
Taco Tuesday is always packed as well. Good deals on tacos, but good luck finding a table after 5pm. Lol
