My coworker and I came here for lunch while in the area, since the restaurant had good reviews on Unilocal.I must say that it was not what I expected. It’s kind of a hole-in-the-wall and although Unilocal calls it «American», I felt like it was more Mexican food based with a couple of American options, including fried food baskets and sandwiches. I ended up ordering the torta with grilled chicken and avocado, with a side of fried okra. My coworker ordered a veggie plate with 4 veggies of her choosing. The food came out quickly and was quite delicious. My sandwich was HUGE! Although I was expecting something completely different, I was pleased with this place and would come here again. The service was friendly and prompt. And although the place is pretty old, it was clean.

Nice little eatery to get an inexpensive meal. The counter is a good place to meet friends for no-frills coffee. The pancakes and juevos rancheros are my favorites for breakfast. Extra points for being walking distance from my house. Places like Hemphill’s shouldn’t be so rare, but for some reason, they are.

The service and the atmosphere here is excellent. The food is above average and the prices are extremely reasonable. I definately recommend this place when you are in the area.

My wife and I had lunch at Hemphill’s on Sunday. This was our first time and we selected it based on the positive reviews — we were not disappointed. We had excellent service from their very friendly staff. My wife had the chicken fajitas and said they were excellent. I had the chicken enchiladas and they were average. Don’t misunderstand, they were good but not any better than you can find elsewhere. We were watching the other food come out and the American dishes — chicken fried steak and catfish etc looked really good. We saw a plate of onion rings go past our table and they got my attention. Good onion rings are very hard to find, so we asked our waitress to bring us an order. They were very good, maybe not the best I have ever had, but I was very happy. So why just 3 stars on my review? The salsa. I thought it was bland. If it was not for that I would have given a solid 4 stars. We will definitely go back and next time try the American food that looked so good.

Been coming here for more than twenty year and I still love it. Not the biggest place but the prices are good and the menu has a good mix. My favorites are the whole cat fish and the chicken fried steak. If you’re looking for glitz and glamor dot go but if you’re looking for good food this is a good place

I LOVETHISPLACE!!! After patronizing this restaurant for the 2nd time, the waitress remembered me and my order. The 2 times I have gone I have ordered the chiliquiles but with white cheese. The portion is HUGE and enough for me to have some leftover for lunch, too! I love their sweet tea. it is brewed and sweetened just enough that it’s not overbearingly sweet. Not only do they have cheap lunch special prices but they even give you free chips and salsa. The salsa is homemade and spicy enough to get your sinuses loose but not running! WIsh I was around this area more often to try out their lunch, but, alas have only been able to make it for breakfast. A really great mom and pop restaurant on the south side of Ft. worth.

Oh, my lil Hemphill street institution. This place is where my wife and I of 24 years had our first date. Laura was our server for that auspicious occasion, and she was our server Sunday while having lunch there. It is a family ran, home cooked Mexican food place with a lil American food flare. Free chips and hot sauce is served with every meal. The Mex food is good, but unlike most Mex places, the American food is good too. And the price is just right! SUNDAYLUNCH: Whole catfish, 2 sides and drink with chips and hot sauce, $ 8.95! Find a better deal, go ahead, try… The folks are real friendly, and you will enjoy your meal at this nice Southside institution. Enjoy, and tell Laura I said Hello!

My husband and I love this place. I have been going here since I was a baby and can not get enough of it. The service is awesome and its quiet and cozy. The best part is that it is ridiculously inexpensive! $ 5.95 for their whole lunch menu can not beat that! Give it a try, you will not be sorry

I love Hemphill’s. if you’re going ask for Martha to wait on you if she’s there. she’s a sweetheart. I can’t find a better tortilla soup. their chicken fried steak, fajitas, quesadillas, torta, & pinto beans with corn bread are also really good. my husband loves their menudo on sundays(only) & he’s pretty picky about his menudo. as a pp stated, this is a working class little restaurant, so when you walk in, it’s a pretty working class restaurant. not fancy, but the people are super friendly & the food is great. I might be a little biased as I’ve been going there with my grandparents, regulars, for years & years, so apply as much salt there as you want. but eat their tortilla soup.

This place is really cheap eats. I’m talking many lunch specials at $ 3.95. The service is prompt and staff is very friendly. The food is mostly average, but the hot sauce is great. The menu is part Mex and part gringo. The Mexican plates are about what you would expect for cheap eats. They do have a decent hamburger and chicken fried steak. The place is what it is, a friendly and cheap restaurant for working-class people and and I kinda like it.
