The Avalon Theatre

I was in a wedding this weekend and couldn’t believe how amazing the staff was. The appetizers were amazing and my whole family had an awesome time.

Newly redone theatre is great, have sat front row and in first balcony section. Both times was great! Love what they did with the old building!

For me, the most important features of any concert venue is the acoustics, followed by aesthetics (lighting, décor, etc), bathrooms, and then (of course) service. These are the essential criteria by which I judge a venue’s quality, everything else is just extras. I recently caught a symphony concert at the Avalon Theatre and I believe the acoustics are solid, however, my seating position in the theatre wasn’t in the «sweet spot» to judge accurately, and there were moments where the woodwinds and brass both weren’t projecting well. I suspect that this was more of a personnel problem, rather than an architectural one as the symphony seemed understaffed.
Aesthetically, the Avalon is a lovely theatre with a neutral yet handsome color scheme in the main hall that exhibits a venerable feel. The interior of the new addition is also pleasing. From the outside though, I find the new addition to be jarring: the annex contrasts against the brick façade of the old building. A sleek and shiny growth on the coarse brick façade. But I digress, the addition serves a functional purpose.
My only serious complaint for the Avalon is that there aren’t enough bathrooms. I was only able to find two during intermission and both had lines out the door. I admit this is partly my failing for not exploring further, but it is odd that (among the men’s bathrooms) there were only two toilets (though I likely missed a bathroom on the second floor).
As for the service, I have nothing unpleasant to report. The concessions staff, the ticket handlers, and the ushers were all helpful and efficient. Overall I find the Avalon to be a quality venue and I will be returning for future events.
