Why bother writing anything… it’s gone baby gone. Before there was a Unilocal, before it had it’s ‘cool’ phase. A bunch of friends and I hung with George and the crew of alcoholic regulars. This is many years ago. That Roll-N is very missed. Even the ‘cool’ version is sort of missed… the new guys(The Railyard) –I think they own the shopping center… are trying to walk the tightrope of keeping something(bartenders) that feel like the old Saloon/dump while completely gutting/updating the place. It will never be the same, but what in life is.

So, you want to go to a dive bar in River Oaks, Houston’s classiest neighborhood? Done. Roll-N is right there serving up your drinks for cheap, at least on this side of town. And since it is in a good part of the inner loop, there’s not too much to worry about while you wile out, except for the ocassional loud train horn passing by. The place is small & old inside, but cozy to any seeking places reminiscent of times past. Like the sign outside says, the TV is large… if it were 20 years ago. I’ve never seen it too packed, so you’ll almost always have breathing room, unlike the crowded washington or midtown scenes that are in bloom as of late. Roll-N is for those looking for something authentic Texan & non-pretentious. Houston, we have solved your problem.

Ah, the Roll-N, what debauchery thine eyes hath seen. For the longest time, the Roll-N was a standard move for our group. Out on a Friday or Saturday, hell, even a Tuesday night, when the clock struck midnight, no matter how fancy a place we were patronizing or event we were attending, we were taking our pumpkin carriage over to the Roll-N to hang with our favorite bartenders Mark and Tony. Only one at a time though, they alternate nights. You might be thinking, what, one bartender? Yep, this is a pretty small joint: the bar on one side, a few tables on the other, and a pool table at the back. Oh, and the legendary jukebox toward the front. Well, it’s really the side I guess, since the entrance faces the railroad tracks. They used to have $ 1 «train shots» whenever one went by, but TABC put an end to that. Anyway, they’ve got the old country crooners and the heavyweights of rock. There’s nothing like ordering a round of beers and shots, and pumping that jukebox full of Styx, Scorpions, Quiet Riot, and Night Ranger. The resulting jovial mood is evident on the patrons’ faces, as well as the years of pictures and scribblings that adorn the walls. In fact, there’s still a picture of the gf behind the bar from a surprise party we threw for her a few years ago. Whether you’re looking for a dive to hit up after your company Christmas party, or just looking for a place to grab a few beers, watch a game, and play some pool, the Roll-N has got you covered. Hell, they don’t win Best Dive for nothing. I even heard a rumor Playboy Magazine once recognized them as well. But I’ve never picked up or perused that publication every month the day it’s released.

So I have been hearing about this place from several friends for months now and I finally made it in. Loved it! It’s like a dive bar for rich people… lol. Well I can’t say for sure that it’s rich people, but when we pulled in all I saw was benzo’s and porsche’s in the parking lot. Not to mention that it is in River Oaks. The bartender was really friendly, and the drinks were stiff and cheap. They had a jukebox with a large selection of 80s and 90s rock. I will definitely come back to this place with friends.

If you are looking for a dive bar, then stop right here. Small, friendly, cheap. It’s quieter M-W, and that’s my preference. The bartenders know me, and remember my order. Heck, I even took a a sapphire/diamond ring off to put on my lotion one night and left it sitting on my table. I didn’t know what had happened to it and went back a few weeks later, asked on chance, and wha do you know, they handed it right over.

It’s a classic Houston dive bar. Very laid-back and cheap. There’s not much else to say. :)

I know some people who find this place really charming. It’s not bad, but it’s not great. Beers are cheap(and I do recommend beer — maybe I’ve only been here on off nights, but the beer is definitely more reliable than other offerings), the crowd is quiet but friendly, and seating is largely in wooden booths. There’s a big TV and a pool table. Dress to… be dressed. In my book, this is «just another dive bar with a cool sign outside,» but you are free to prove me wrong. I get the impression that crowds come here to watch«sports».
