Great wine and beer selection, and a tasty assortment of gourmet italian foods. The staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Prices are quite reasonable. Each and every wine they’ve recommended was excellent.(not ever«skinky» or «musty» like the wines I’ve bought from Kappy’s). This place is the real deal. The store is bright, clean and well-stocked. I love this wine shop and will be going here to buy my wine and beer from here on out.

Beer nerds, start your engines. This bright, new, beer-and-wine-only storefront is located on the retail strip of Oak Grove Village straddling the Melrose/Malden line(it’s actually in Melrose). They have quite a host of quality wines to chose from as well as some gourmet foodstuffs. As neither is my bailiwick, I’ll focus on where they hit a home run– the beer. Sure, you can get American macro brew here. You can also get macro micro. What distinguishes McDonough’s is their mind-boggling selection of craft brew… heavy on New England, but representative of the rest of the country as well. Let’s go through some names– Mayflower(MA), Cisco(MA), Newport Storm(RI), Pretty Things(MA), Wachusett(MA), Dogfish Head(DE), Maudite(Montréal, QC), Full Sail(OR), Abita(LA), Ithaca(NY), Lagunitas(CA), Left Hand(CO), Bear Republic(CA), Rogue(OR), Blue Hills(MA), Berkshire Brewing Company(MA)… you get the picture. MVP: If they start carrying Gritty McDuff’s and Hale’s Ales, I will upgrade to five stars. Also, no lottery, no smokes. LVP: Beer and wine only. I can only imagine the exotic strains of rum, bourbon, scotch and tequila they would have if Melrose allowed a full liquor license. A bit pricey, but I will gladly support the quality of beer with a quantity of cash.
