Redlands Grill by J. Alexander’s

Superb date night or business lunch place. The food at J Alexander’s is outstanding, but it is the SERVICE that really stands out here! Something so rare to see these days. Positively impeccable and consistent! Have been for lunch, dinner and even just dessert/​coffee and always the same experience: friendly, professional and very knowledgeable servers who are very attentive but do not «hover». I have never waited too long for anything I’ve needed.
The managers are top-​notch too… my husband’s salmon came out a little too rare for his taste and manager Nick came by to ensure his satisfaction, wearing a stylish suit and tie. Very professional and impressive.
And the food! Wow. I love the Thai Kai Salad and the Crispy Shrimp Tacos! Their deviled egg appetizer is amazing too, topped with candied bacon pieces. And if you ever catch the Monterey mushroom soup as the soup of the day, it’s creamy mushroom perfection. As many others have noted, the warmed carrot cake is TO DIE FOR and they serve THE BEST full-​bodied, smooth brew coffee. I had to ask the brand, it is so good!
You have to try this place! Ambiance, food and service make this a triple whammy — a quality dining experience, worth every penny!

First let me this was literally the best service experience I have had in Memphis possibly ever, seriously whatever they are doing training hiring wise needs to be given a state metal. Friendly with out being fake, knowledgable our waitress knew the menu and wine list and I mean she freaking knew it inside and out!!! She was available when we needed her but never when we didn’t, just a great experience.
Sad when great service is the thing that starts a review but it truly was something you just don’t seem to get anymore.
Oh, the food. Well it was also great. Tasty fresh and bigger than expected portions.
Of course it isn’t cheap but you don’t leave feeling like you paid more than you should have and to be honest it is more than fair for what you get.
The only question left is why was this my first visit? I promise it will not be my last.

We had a great meal and great service from Amanda. She was helpful, attentive and extremely friendly in serving us. The food was outstanding as we had the tuna steak rare and the French Dip sandwich. Both were cooked perfectly and service was spot on. The spicey tuna roll was great starter also. This is a must try place when in town.

Fabulous menu revamp that now includes sushi. My husband loves the sushi, but it’s not my favorite. I like Kroger sushi, though, so what do I know? I do know that I LOVE the fish taco platter! Yummy, perfectly fried cod in 3 grilled flour tortillas (I like corn, but they were delicious), topped with cabbage and spicy mayo. The old favorites are there (creamy chicken soup, carrot cake, crab cakes) and the new additions are so refreshing. I like the new J. Alexanders so much better! It’s more like Houstons and right in our back yard.

Do yourself a favor and eat the Thai Chi chicken salad. Just delicious! Always consistent. Always great service. If you can’t tell by my reviews consistency is important.

Our server was a delight and the prime rib sandwich was humongous. Loved it!

Things are rarer than most places so order one step more done.

Redlands is my all time favorite. Steak Maui with the Mac and cheese is my usual. I absolutely love the taste of the steak Maui. It has a semi– sweet glazing that gives it an extraordinary taste. Service is usually very attentive. My favorite place for a nice meal.

The waiter was under educated about gluten items and menus but the manager assured just about anything can be accommodated. I ordered the ahi salad since they have GF soy sauce! Absolutely delicious!!!

I have eaten here three times now, all have been lunch meals. The service is always good, staff is friendly, efficient and the place is clean. I have mixed reviews on the food, and the desserts, something they brag about, if pass on.

Outstanding service and dining experience! We enjoyed our lunch as the food was served hot and in a timely fashion. Our waitress (Jasmine) provided excellent service ensuring our order was taken, food was served and our glasses were kept full at all times. The atmosphere is cozy with great ambiance in an elegant environment. Their signature key lime pie was an excellent end to an outstanding meal.

Arrived before the dinner hour. Not busy at all. We were seated and then waited for 15 minutes. Not one person came over or even acknowledged us. We got up and walked out. Went down the street to Abuelos. It was wonderful!

Vibe: dimly lit, romantic, intimate, classy.
Service: top notch. Just what you would expect from a nice steakhouse.
Food: wonderful appearance. I got the filet mignon with bearnaise sauce and a baked potato. All of it was great. Not Ruth’s Chris good. It quite tasty. Portion sizes are great for the price.
Overall: it a very nice place. Busy but no problems waiting at the bar enjoying a nice glass of Pinot noir. Overall very please and I will be bag.

Food was great, service was good, lighting was very dark. Came here on a weekend and waited over an hour for a table for two. Which is a great way to make us upset.

When visiting Memphis this was my first time at dining in. I was impressed! The service was over and beyond. The servers were polite and on time. My fiancé and I enjoyed: potato soup (mashed potato type with thick chunks of bacon and cheese), sushi (nigiri (salmon and tuna)), pork tenderloin (very tender pre cut into bite sized round pieces, covered in a thick sauce that might I add is exceptional! Served with mashed potatoes thick kind skin and all) and steak tacos (steak, lettuce, cheese and pico de gallo on warm tortilla shells). Everything as far as the food was melt in your mouth great. The management was super nice and courteous. I will most definitely be returning

Their carrot cake and prime rib is awesomely good. I go home and dream about the carrot cake, that is how good it is. But then I am a foodie who loves to eat, eat, and eat some more with the occasional drinks thrown in.
Being on a budget I usually get the prime rib sandwich and cake instead of the prime rib dinner. Yes, it’s a smaller portion but it still fills you up and leaves room so you can have the carrot cake.
Always looking for ways to budget and enjoy good food.

Extremely disappointed in this restaurant today. We attempted to visit today for a family birthday. We called ahead and were told they had no wait, but couldn’t take our name down. We arrived at the restaurant 12 minutes after our phone call we arrived and put our name on the list.
5 minutes after putting our name on the list, a stewardess approached our group of 6 and said the wait was now 1 hour and 45 minutes. I’m really confused as to how much can change in 12 minutes at 4pm, but apparently a whole 2 hour wait can appear for a party of 6.
So after asking both the stewardess and the assistant manager, neither of whom could do anything but apologize for the ‘miscommunication’, we left. Neither offered to do anything, any sort of free appetizer or dessert, nothing. They were both rude and neither cared about their mistake.
If I could rate this negative stars, I would. I’m looking forward to my call with the full manager — who wasn’t working tonight — tomorrow morning.

Whenever I’m in Memphis I love going to this restaurant & sitting in the bar area. Always friendly service & delicious food. They have hands down THE best Caesar salad — I dream about those croutons! — & their carrot cake is to die for.
We have spent the last few New Year’s Eve there & this year was the best yet. Lots of great energy & awesome service from Kayla!

Upscale restaurant service was great. Salads, fish and prime rib was really good however pretty pricey for families. If you want good food and good service this is the place

Came in. Sat at the bar. 5 or 6 people behind the bar.
12 minutes without even so much as a nod.
Got up and left.

The food was delicious! We tried the grilled artichoke, it was delicious but I think it was a little too well grilled, most of it was chewy and I wasn’t able to swallow it. What little of it I had it as delicious though. I also ordered the Maui Steak! It was really really good. Steak was tender, well seasoned and cooked the way I requested it. The place was crowded and we had to wait approx 30 mins for a seat. It was worth it though. We knew it was a hip hopping place when we first got there because parking lot was full! Everyone dressed casual and appropriately. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone.

Great place for first timers! The menu is easy to read with much to choose from! I enjoyed my dinner! I had the rotisserie chicken and mash. The place is a bit on the dark side but romantic and cozy for an evening off with a date! Now time for the dessert! Chocolate cake with ice cream! Yesssssss

I always sit at the bar! The bar tenders are class act’s! Food has always been cooked properly! Ahi Tuna Steak is great! Get Wasbi mayo on the side!

A crowd favorite that never disappoints. An awesome experience that satisfies again and again. Perfect date atmosphere, in case you were wondering. Go and life is good.

They have changed their name to «Redland’s Grill» — per the staff nothing else has changed — ownership, menu ect. — still the same. Just new name.

My most recent experience here was great! From the moment I stepped on, it was apparent that customer service is supposed to be at the forefront of the minds of the staff. Someone ged the door open for me, asked how my day was, and immediately led me to a nice booth even though I was eating alone. From there my waiter (Ryan Herd, I learned from my receipt), immediately came to get my drink order, then again to ask if I wanted an appetizer or salad to start. I opted-​out. I explained that I hadn’t been to this restaurant in quite some time and that I may need some help choosing my meal. Ryan was more than happy to go through the ingredients and preparations of the menu items I was interested in. With his help, I finally decided on the veggie burger. It was fantastic!!! It actually takes the cake as my new favorite veggie burger (followed by the oat burger at Otherlands). The thick, juicy burger was oat based and was comprised of a whole host of other veggies including beets (BEETS!!!). It came with lettuce, cheese, red onion, tomato, and pickle on a delicious toasted bun. I chose broccoli (which came sprinkled with parmesan! Yum!) as my side. I finished held my meal, then got the rest wrapped to go. I decided to follow this up with the Crème brûlée, which was the special desert of the day. It was absolutely perfect. It was creamy and decadent, filled with vanilla beans, and topped with that perfectly crisp sugar crust that Crème brûlée is known for. Then they put a dollop of whipped cream on top with berries and mint. It was a huge and heavenly; I went to bed dreaming of having it again.
Other things to note:
My waiter was so attentive.
I can’t remember a moment that my water glass had less than a sip missing from it.
My mom has gone with a group of friends and had the same waiter. She had nothing but high praise for him!
Other people brought out my crème brûlée and answered questions I had with a smile! I really enjoyed the customer service and the food. It was a fantastic overall experience!

If I want a good meal in a relaxing atmosphere, J. Alexander’s is a great place for lunch and dinner. The first few years, the service was excellent, but inconsistent now.
The food is still great and you can’t beat the prime rib and the fried chicken salad! (There is plenty for another meal.

We were in town for the holidays and haven’t been here in years so we remembered we liked it and thought we’d stop in and have a nice dinner. We called to check on the wait and were told 30 mins and that we could be put on call ahead to be seated. We arrived and had to wait another 45 mins.
After getting seated we were rushed. We ordered an appetizer because we were starving but our salads came out before it, then our meal arrived after we were done with out Salads so we ate our steak. As we finished our steak our waitress came up and asked to box up our appetizer and we hadn’t had any of it, so we were frustrated and annoyed so we said yes. When we got home we found less than half of our cheese dip and no salsa.
We were at our table for 35 minutes with a $ 70+ check for 2. Extremely upset and warning everyone to stay away, try something else and spend your money on a place that respects you and takes good care of you. Firebirds, Rafferty’s, just about anywhere else at this price point.
Paris our waitress seemed to be in another world, disconnected, and lost. I know they have to turn tables but my goodness!
I will say this, everything we had was really good. The Steak Maui and Side Salad and Queso (which we ate when we got home) was really good. No bread but… the sweet tea was good as well.

I haven’t been to J Alexanders in awhile and decided to come here with a group of guys to just hang out.
Our server was very attentive and made sure everyone got their food and if we needed a refill on our drinks.
Majority of us ordered steak and prime rib. My filet was cooked just right (med rare) while my other friends had the ribeye. One had a slightly overcooked ribeye (med well) and was offered an apology and a new steak. Even the manager came to apologize afterwards.
Our table was rewarded with some chocolate cake and ice cream for the trouble afterwards. That just hit the spot at the end of our meal and was much appreciated.
