The Phở is awesome! So much flavor you don’t really need hoisen. Also the condiment plate was overflowing. I came for phở but tried a taco as an appetizer and ended up taking 3 more home, the shells are exceptional. If you like Phở or tacos, Speedy’s is definetly worth a try.

This is the best place ever to have existed in Norfolk. Phở, tacos, Philly cheesesteaks were what me & the boyfriend usually ate in one sitting. Their broth was even more flavorful than the Phở place on Holland Road in VB. So sad it’s closed. I’ve been telling friends about it since we’ve been here, it was definitely divey but the staff was great & the food was great. I did see a fly in my food once during the summer time but it didn’t bother me all that much… I grew up in the Philippines. lol Will have to pour one out for one of the best local dives around.

I’m so, so sad this place closed down. They had the best phở, banh mi, and spring rolls. The staff were incredibly friendly, and knew both me and my roommate by name and order when we came in. Evidently, if you want catering for a large party, you can still call them to do it for you, but no more can you roll in and have a chicken taco and a small beef ball and flank steak bowl when you’re sick. I’ll miss you forever!

For my first time & my 9 year old daughter being as picky as she is… We both enjoyed our visit! Ordered 3 tacos, fries, & a bowl of phở w/steak we shared. The tacos I think were our favorite. The SHELL! Soooo fattening but, the only place I know of that fries their own. I was looking for salsa or something to add a kick tho. So, I threw in some of my jalapeños from the phở. My daughter & I liked that they added sour cream w/out asking. I ate the taco over my bowl of soup so all the shell crumbs can fall in. Phở was good! Def great for the area! I thought the portion was smaller than I’m accustomed to but, by adding ALL of the fixings & sauces… MUAH& hit the spot for a cold day! My daughter said it was better that T Bell and that she wanted to come here for Thanksgiving! REALLY??? Then, continued to say she liked it better than BChon. I’m so confused. I’d go back.

At first I was a bit discouraged to see a Vietnamese food place that said tacos on it, but when I tried it out it happened to be some of the best phở in the area. The broth is a lot more authentic then it’s competitors, and the owner grows his own Thai Basil as I saw out side. This place makes a nice little phở haven here in this part of VA, I am from California with a large Vietnamese population and phở being available everywhere. But coming to VA there are only a few places, but none the less the phở here reminds me of home

My husband and I Loveee Phở soup, after they close our favorite spot we been looking for good phở for a while, we have passed this location several times, but because of its appearance and location we never tried it. Till today we thought we gave it a chance, what a great surprise! The food is delicious! We had phở soup ofcourse, spring rolls and crispy rolls. I wish we visited sooner! We will def go back ! Don’t let the outside fool you :) I saw some people eating tacos and burritos and they also looked amazing. Now I know where to get tacos for my kids :) I was in between 4 – 5 star but I gave it 4 because even tho the food was great, I think the place can use a little clean up :)

The variety on the menu is astounding! The man running the counter was friendly, and humorous. I really wanted mexican today, and i had been driving past this place for ages, so I finally decided to investigate. I’m so glad I did!!! I got the taco and burrito(with chicken— they charge extra if you want different meats on each) combo special– And believe me when I say that the person who mentioned the taco shells being perfection, is telling the truth!!! I also had their lemon sweet tea(kept in a container next to the soda fountain) and it’s just the right blend of tart and flavourful tea. I appreciate that more than the next person probably, since I don’t drink soda. My companion got the Bahn mi. It was generous with the toppings, and packed plenty of heat. I“ll definitely go back to explore the rest of the menu! This is one of those times when you really need to look past the outside appearance of a place and just go and enjoy pigging out on the food!

I moved to Norfolk from San Diego, California. There is a large population of Vietnamese in California, which of course caused me to fall in love with their cuisine. This, is what led me to visit Speedy’s. Of course I was skeptical at first because it seemed to be a Mexican restaurant. But despite the name, the fact that It looked run down, and is near one of the worse neighborhoods in the area, I gave it a go. Needless to say the Phở was good. Even though they can be a bit hard to understand sometimes, the owner/operators are very friendly and funny. I am a regular now. Everything on the menu is fantastic. If you don’t like it, they will even make your meal free or prepare something else if you would like. If your kind of on the fence about visiting this place, please do. You won’t regret it!

With a name this bad, you have to give it five stars or at least a try. So, I’ve given it a try twice now and will probably go back just to say that I’ve been there a few times. The food is food, but crazy. From cheesesteaks to vietnamese vermicelli dishes to mexican food, I’m not really sure what I want to order when I walk in. I went with a noodle dish as it was a little too hot for some phở; my mind keeps going to the Vietnamese side of the house, but next time I’m going to have to go with the cheesesteak, I think. I did ask why they don’t have any Vietnamese beer and was told how difficult it was to get it. That would boost my rating to the full five stars. The ambience is like a cheap diner and the kitchen enables you to wear home the smell. All of this adds to the authentic nature of the place, except that this place is fairly clean. Check this place out and make sure you wear your best set of flip-flops!

On a whim and in dire need of good phở, I ate here today. The spring rolls were delicious and the #2 phở was delicious. I will definitely be returning to try some of the sandwiches and tacos because the concept behind this place is curious. They also serve beer! I was happily surprised by this. It looks precarious on the outside, but walk on in and the folks that run the place are very friendly. :o)

Conceptually this place makes no sense. Kind of like Filipino Halo Halo. Nobody in their right mind could concoct the idea that Vietnamese Phở, Mexican tacos, and Philly cheese steaks should all reside under one roof and on the same menu. It has to be the product of somebody drunk dreaming at three o’clock in the morning. But somehow it works. I don’t know how but it does. I tried the Phở on today’s visit. The tacos and cheesesteaks will have to wait for future visits. As Phở goes, it isn’t bad but it isn’t the best by any stretch. The broth lacks that deep, umami sensation on the palate that you get from simmering bones and aromatics for long periods of time. However, that is why the Sriracha and Hoisin sauce are on the table. Enough squirts of Sriracha and Hoisin could probably make dog piss taste like nectar. And on John G.‘s advice, I checked my Thai basil for cooties. None found. Bonus.

I really should kick myself for not trying this place sooner. Thankfully I lack the flexibility to do so. I ordered phở w/brisket & well done flank, the boyfriend ordered a mushroom cheesesteak w/fries, & we shared a coconut juice because we’re cute like that. The phở was ready in the amount of time it took for us to pick a spot to sit. No lie, it was less than 2 minutes. His cheesesteak & fries came out about 3 minutes later. Everything was delicious! In my opinion, this is some of the best phở I’ve had in Hampton Roads. Nice & beefy broth, with a hearty portion of beef & noodle. The cheesesteak is HUGE, with lots of cheese & fillings so you’ll need a fork & knife to enjoy if you wanna stay dainty. If you’re in the area you must stop by and give these folks your business. The service is very friendly, the food is both flavorful & plentiful, and everything is very reasonably priced. It may not look like much on the outside, but really, who picks restaurants based on the exterior décor?

I love going here. It’s a place to get some good food quickly and at a decent price. Since I enjoy phở I heard this old spot was under new ownership and they were not only going to serve Mexican food(like past owners) but they would offer subs and phở. Phở Hung is less than a five-minute drive from me so I headed over. When it comes to the food I was fairly impressed. As I touched on earlier, there are three separate menus available — Vietnamese: which is where you’ll find phở, banh mi(Vietnamese sandwiches) and spring rolls; Mexican: tacos, burritos, nachos; good ol’ American: subs, specifically cheesesteaks. The phở is delicious — the broth is what sets it apart from some of the other phở spots I’ve been to. Although you can have it anytime, it seems best to have a hot bowl during the winter months to warm up. I’ve tried their flounder burrito which is also excellent. It’s very tasty and it will fill you up. And yes, their cheesesteak is stellar. Is it the best around? Probably not, but it is still very good and worth checking out at least one time. For me, I’ve gotten into the habit of ordering the rice vermicelli. It’s essentially a bowl of the rice vermicelli, which looks like noodles(same that’s served in phở) and it’s mixed with vegetables and some sort of meat. The one I order is the beef and chicken combo, and this one bowl is a hearty meal. More often than not I can’t finish it, but it’s always fun to try. Along with the friendly service, I will always champion Phở Hung. I think the only thing that may turn people off is the visible wear and tear. The place could use an overhaul, but I personally don’t mind it, not as long as they keep making good food. JV

I love the novelty of this place. Phở, cheesesteaks, tacos… awesome. And this place looked like a dive, so that just added to the charm for me. Thing is the food was only okay. I had the cheesesteak, Jeff had the tacos, and our friend Asia had the Phở, all bases were covered. The steak could have been seasoned a little better, the bread was a little stale, and I would have preferred more cheese. Asia said her Phở was lacking in flavor. Jeff liked that the tacos were freshly fried there and was overall satisfied with the taste and portion size, but not in love by any means.

So I fudged a bit. I did come back to hang out with good company and give them another chance. My rating still stands. I wish I could at least give another star for the friendly and quirky waiter, but unfortunately he was not able to improve the bland Phở broth and watered-down tea/lemonade I was served(picture). I’m not sure what was worse, my greasy spoon or the fact that my cup smelled like bubble bath. Sorry PHSG, but we just can’t be friends.

I’ve put off coming here for quite a while, since the name change actually. I had no desire to go into a Phở place. It’s just not my thing. However at our last UYE several Unilocaler’s raved about the place and it’s Cheesesteaks. So what the heck, a UYE was quickly thrown together and several of us got together yesterday to check it out. First thing, it’s a dive. Not a total mess, but it could definitely use some TLC inside. We had a few tables pulled together right on the side of the kitchen and the quirky waiter came around and took our orders(one at a time) and then went back to the kitchen to have it prepared. Guess it was his first time. When it came to the part of my order where I requested my drink I asked for a Mt. Dew. The waiter said«The Pepsi machine is destroyed, I don’t know what I did to it, but it’s destroyed». You had to be there, the delivery was very funny. My companion and I each ordered a #1 special which was 3 taco’s any way you like and a drink. Then we split a small cheese steak sandwich. The taco’s were unique, the restaurant makes their own hard shells by deep frying a wheat tortilla which was a welcome change from the standard corn one you get at 99% of the other places. The taco’s were decent sized and had plenty of beef. The taste was ok, but a bit on the bland side. They aren’t much for Mexican seasoning it seams. The cheesesteak was also good, but the order was incorrect. Apparently by default they put lettuce and tomato on their cheesesteaks. I specifically asked for just cheese and onion… We ate it anyway. All in all, not a bad place, but not the greatest. We got out of there for about $ 15.00 which isn’t bad at all for 2 people. Will I go back, probably, but it’s not on the top of my ‘must do’ list.

It’s not organized, it doesn’t make sense, but the food is very very good. I went once for the Phở, and came back this week for the cheese steaks. First the Phở: It was OK. The flavor was good, but there was not much meat. The basil is grown outside the front door which sounds great, but the basil I got had leaf miners(google it) in it, which grossed me out. So, that kind of sucked. But for some reason I decided to come back this week and order a cheese steak. I knew they use Amoroso rolls, which are the legit Philly rolls. So I placed my order for a cheese steak and a hard taco and waited. and waited… and waited… They lost my ticket. I waited 20 minutes then asked the guy what was up. 10 minutes later they brought out my food. I was pissed it took so long. I was already thinking about the 1 star review I was going to give them. Then I ate the taco. Dang that was good. Then I ate the cheese steak. For the record, I eat a lot of cheese steaks, and this was the BEST one I have ever had in Hampton Roads. The Amoroso rolls are awesome. The meat was lean and there was a LOT of meat. The grilled onions and cheese were present in the correct ratio and I was loving it. Soon I forgot all about the 1 star review, and now I am singing their praises. Check out my cheese steak list to see how this stacks up against other local places.

I really like this place. I stumbled across it a year and a half ago while out exploring for the sake of exploring. I couldn’t figure out what the hell it was as it has speedy gonzalez plastered along the side of the roof but Phở Hung over the front door. WTF? Just my kind of divey place, so I went in. I have been back a few times and always enjoy the food. Every time I have been, I have ordered spring rolls, leave out the shrimp. Simple with some greens, bean sprouts and pork. Very tasty. The phở has always been enjoyable. The first time, I ordered the large and it was a bit too much. So, now the small is just fine. This last time, I went with a fellow Unilocaler and we both had rice vermicelli. It was a warm day and hot soup didn’t sound great. I had the chicken dish which was seasoned very nicely and quite good. Between the spring rolls, chicken dish, and drink, it was about 14 bucks. Not too bad price wise. Besides the phở and rice dishes, you can also get tacos and I think they have burgers, fries and philly cheesesteaks. Don’t hold me to the burger part though! It’s a strange hodge podge of foods that just seems to work for some reason. As others have said, the place is a little run down but I guess my definition of sketchy is different than everyone else’s because it doesn’t seem like such a bad area. I ain’t living there, mind you… but I’m not scared either :) I definitely put it in my favorite lunch places in Norfolk.

Maybe it was an off day but the phở did not wow anyone in our party. It was ok… but not as rave review worthy as I expected. We did try the tacos and they were great for cheap tacos. The only phở place we’ll go down here is Phở 78 and I think we’ll stick to it if we’re craving phở. I think I was a bit off-put by the basil that lacked flavor… and didn’t know why it bothered me. As we were leaving, my husband pointed out that is was growing around the perimeter of the restaurant… same grey-looking basil growing in a not-so-ideal environment. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who thought the basil quality wasn’t the greatest… I agree with you Vince L. Tacos yes. Phở… maybe not for me. Still, not a bad bargain and place to drop into if you’re in the area. Sketch area but really clean inside… and nice staff too.

Wow! Phở and tacos! Who would have thought? You probably drove by this place many times and though it was closed. Nope, open. They actually have a very long list of items on their Vietnamese menu from steamed spring rolls to Vietnamese sandwiches. Great selection of phở as well with everything you would expect going to places like Phở 79 or Saigon 1. I got the special with all the«weird» meats in it. Great. The soup base was probably better than Phở 79. What’s great(as I eluded to earlier) is that they also serve very American/Tex-mex foods for your friends who are scared of tripe and sriracha! The philly cheesesteak was surprisingly tasty and they have a whole lot of other things on their menu. Given that this place is closer to me and it has other non Vietnamese foods for my Asian-Food hating friends(should they really be my friends?), I think I might have found a new phở-home!(ET phở-home?)
