Clay’s Curbside Grill

If hot dogs were art, these dogs would be hanging in the Nelson. Now you may say a hot dog is just a hot dog. Clay’s knocks that statement in the mud. I have had four different dogs They are as follows:
The Chicago Dog — ¼ pound dog on a poppy seed roll, neon relish, sport peppers, celery salt, pickles, tomatoes, mustard.
The Bacon Cheddar Dog — ¼ pound dog on a Roma Bakery roll, cheddar cheese sauce, onions, and half a pig worth of bacon.
The KC Dog — ¼ Scimeca’s Italian Sausage (KC original) on a Roma Bakery roll (another KC original), topped with Gates BBQ sauce (I don’t need to say it do I?) and a half a pig worth of bacon.
??? — Now this was made spur of the moment. ¼ pound dog on a Roma roll, cheddar sauce, onions, bacon, Gates BBQ sauce, and pickles. I say it should be called the Porker.
The prices may seem a tad high, but when you see how much you get, they are just right. I also love this place because it is a local guy and not a chain. he takes great pride in the freshness of his product. He grills every dog fresh to order and stocks everything fresh daily. You can’t beat that.
I highly encourage everyone to support this great local business, you will thank me for it I am sure.

I love this place, you can’t go wrong. I highly recommend the KC with bacon, onions, pickle, sausage and good old Gates sauce. Never had a bad sandwich here. The kids like it too.

So yummy and quick. Chicago dog was spot on and the hotdog with bacon, onion, and cheese had a TON of bacon on it. Highly recommend for lunch or just a quick bite in the NKC area.

When I moved here from OK several years ago I greatly missed Coney I-​Lander in Tulsa. I looked for a KC restaurant that could take its place, but nothing comes close. Until I found Clay’s thanks to Unilocal,and tried it last week. The dogs here are totally different from the coneys, but in a good way.
Great service, and the bacon dog seemed like it had half a pound of bacon on it. The temperature outside was about 15 degrees but the guy at the grill was staying warm with all the rushing back and forth he was doing to keep up with the orders. This is the type of place where I’ll be a regular.

This is definitely the place to go to get a big, fat, juicy hotdog! It’s made to order and grilled to perfection. I got the bacon, cheese dog and they were very generous with the bacon. The service was top notch too, very friendly, helpful and attentive to our needs without being overbearing. And you can’t beat the prices. I already can’t wait to go back!

Hot dogs are large (not those skinny grocery store dogs) all beef. Great warm and soft bun. A plain grilled dog, chips, and I drink set me back $ 5. I’d want my dog well-​done next time. I like my kind of charred.

I have driven by the place probably 500 times without stopping. You have to be in the mood for a hotdog. What an idiot I was. This place is great! I had a Chicago Dog and I was a wonderful mess. I’ll be back.

Tried to dine there for lunch last sat. They were closed! Store window says they are open on Saturdays. Their recorded phone line says they are open on Saturdays. What gives? Is it seasonal?

Really good. I wandered by and had a spicy meatball grinder that was one of the best I’ve ever had. Tax is included in the price and the guy manning the grill was really friendly.

I like this place — quick, clean affordable good food.
Pros: Quality product, simply the best freshest buns in town, awesome chips (I cant remember the brand) wide variety of drink options (can only).
Quirky but efficient service. Just plain odd. Woman behind counter is nice but kind of like the «Soup Nazi». Examples over a few visits.
One visit I added relish to my hotdog and told her husband behind the grill and she sort of got on me. «Don’t talk to him, if you need anything run it through me.»
Next visit she picked up my tray from table and said,” I will do this just once because we are not busy, but next time you need to bus your own table.”
Another visit,” Don’t even think about moving those tables together — tables are not to be moved.“
I will take quirky service over slow or bad service any day. So I will keep going back. I like to be reprimanded on my lunch hour.
On a final note — they add a «service charge» on your credit card for using it. I don’t like that. It is a cost of doing business — build it into your prices.
I recommend Clay’s — give it a shot. Just remember to bus your tables, don’t move the tables, don’t talk to the chef and bring cash!

Friendly service and EXCELLENT food! I got the Hawaiian Dog (bratwurst with pineapple and teriyaki) and my SO got the hickory dog (cheese and bacon hotdog).
Definitely my new favorite place for lunch in the North KC region.
One quick note: other reviews mentioned philly cheese steaks, but they no longer carry those as of four months ago. It’s okay, though, because all of the dogs and sausages they carry are awesome!

Found Clay’s from a friend that drove by. I told my friend that I was craving a Flint (Mich) Style coney dog and he directed me here. This place has every dog available, but a Flint Style Coney. Didn’t take the owner long to offer me his own style of a KC Coney. Which was tasty and a lot of meaty dog, with onions, mustard, and cheese. On a fresh Roma bun. All KC product’s. The menu offers many varieities of dog’s. Very, very friendly and genuine people that own it. Can’t wait to try another flavor.

First time visiting. Super friendly staff. Got the Reuben dog. One word: wow! They definitely don’t skimp on meat and condiments. Recommend for a quick, delicious lunch. Super place!

Not only do Adam and Jennifer take the time to get to know each of there customers personally and make you feel like family, but it doesn’t hurt that they also have the best hotdogs in the city. A few of my favorites are the KC dog, Chicago dog, and the Italian sausage dressed in grilled peppers and onions. Great service! Great food!

The Phillys were great. Also I had a bacon dog also great. Love this place. There’s no better place in the north town

Tried their sirloin Philly not too long ago and it was delicious and they don’t skimp on the meat!

Went to this place at the suggestion of a friend. When I approached the building I wasn’t 100% sure where the entrance was at, but I managed to find it (right past the grill.) I went inside and I’m warmly greeted by the lady behind the counter who mentions that she hasn’t seen me come in before. After that I was welcomed to the establishment and I ordered a big chilidog with cheese onions and mustard. They don’t have a soda fountain but instead cans and water in a cooler.
As far as mood it seemed like it was relatively busy with many regulars being greeted by name, very nice touch, personal.
I would definitely go back to see what other menu items are like, and I appreciate the down-​to-​Earth sincerity of the staff.

I got the KC. The Italian sausage was huge and included not tiny bits of bacon, but several full strips of crispy goodness on a slathering of BBQ sauce. Delicious.

Super quick and friendly service. And actually a place on Armour Rd that has parking!
Tried the bacon dog and it comes with an obscene amount of bacon on it. Chips and cans of soda for $ 1. Tax is already included in the prices. Cheap meal!
Next time definitely trying the Philly! Will be back!

This guy knows what he is doing. I stopped by for lunch one day to try out the place and was very pleased. The hot dogs were grilled perfectly and the toppings were fresh. Highly recommended
