Wonder Food Bakery opened in the 1970’s time era. under the management of Paul Wong, oaktown biz wonderkin. not sure if the s.f. or oaktown site was his first branch. wonder changed the business model of chinese bakeries. cheap, excellent deliz pastries became the norm as quality and cheap pricing brought in literally crowds of hungry morning workers. and afternoon shopping moms… eats i like then: –custard egg tart –steam bbq steams –cocktail buns –pineapple buns –coffee was good too. –cash only then

On a tight budget, I came here because I heard the prices were really good. I ordered 32-layer sheets cakes for $ 180. They requested a cash deposit, but I only had $ 10. It was no problem. In comparison to other bakeries, Wonder Food uses less fruit on top and inside. Typical white cake with lightly sweetened whipped cream edged with strawberries, kiwis, canned peach slices, honeydew melon balls, etc. The cakes arrived on time, tasted fresh and the words were spelled correctly.(Seriously, cakes from another bakery for anniversary party came with large words announcing«Happy Annivery») No charge for delivery in Chinatown. The delivery guys came with the invoice and I was able to give them the payment on the spot.(vs. other bakery where they deliver the cakes, but need you to stop by the bakery to pay) Three tasty fruit-topped two-layer sheet cakes for less than $ 200, including cash tips for delivery guys. I’m a fan!

Cheap pastries! Most items are $ 1-$ 2. I had an egg custard tart and custard bread with creamy filling.(Yes… I was into custard stuff at that moment…) They both were well made and tasted«authentic» to me. I grew up in Taipei, and the baked goodies here remind me of my hometown. Did not have room to try many other pastries, which all looked pretty good. The staff was friendly. The atmosphere very casual. It felt more like a cafeteria, with people sitting & chatting around plastic tables on plastic chairs. The coffee and tea are fine(also $ 1-$ 2 per cup), just not their specialty. I would go back to pick up more cheap pastries when I’m in the area.

Aw they’re gone! :(They’ve sold the business and now it’s going to open as Blossom Bakery. Blossom will sell more high end pastries. RIP Wonder Foods. Have to say that my coworkers bought my baby shower cake here before they closed down for good. The cake was nice, fresh and spongy.

I usually go here after work when I meet up with my family to commute back to the East bay. By the time i get there, there usually isn’t much bread when i get there, but hey, I’m not that picky. I usually get the dinner buns, or the hot dog bun. Since I am a regular, the owner pretty much knows what I want and as soon as I get in, he pretty much has it ready.

This place is awesome. Really good pineapple buns here. They keep them in the oven so they come out nice and warm. They charged a dollar for tea though. WTH? Packaged Lipton tea that costs more than anything on the menu? A perfect workday would consist of an afternoon snack here while playing the Hot Spot Lotto game with the other 70+ year-old Chinese men. JONASAPPROVED!

The buns and cake here are AWESOME. My favorites are the pineapple bun, bbq pork bun, hot dog bun, lemon swiss rolls, and this little banana cake thing(soft and chewy like a mochi, not really a cake). All the buns are fluffy. My mom always orders birthday cakes here since my dad works across the street. The cakes are so light and aren’t too sweet. We tried the chocolate cake last time. There’s just a hint of chocolate, but it’s satisfying. This place has the only cake I’ve had so far for which I don’t need a gallon of milk to eat. The only thing that bothers me are the guys who smoke right outside the door.

5 Stars! Been here since I was a little kid. Reason they’re popular? Their breads are fresh and inexpensive… but most importantly like my mom said they’re the only ones that don’t stick to your teeth. that’s how well it is made. my bday cakes, soft, spongy, light creamed filled are always from here since i was young. I live abroad currently and I so crave some of those breads and cake! I would order my wedding cake here except I’ve never seen a good Chinese design before. A tough choice…

I’ve been working in chinatown for a while now and I never really checked out Wonder Food before, and I only tried it because of the previous review. I went there and tried out their cocktail bun and pineapple bun, both of which were quite good. The cocktail bun was not overly coconutty and neither were too sweet. Nice, warm and pillowy. I’m surprised there aren’t that many people who frequent the place — it’s quite quiet except for a couple older gentlemen playing Keno. It’s definitely cheap, but I’m not sure it’s any cheaper than several of the other Chinatown bakeries. Pretty standard for most places aside from Golden Gate Bakery.
