Yes, it’s nice to have a Dunkin Donuts in Powderhouse Square. There was a glaring Dunkin Donuts void between the Maguon Square, Davis Square, and Boston Avenue locations… not to mention the five or six other coffee shops within walking distance, including one practically next door. So yeah, it’s nice to finally have a Dunkin Donuts in the neighborhood. Seriously though, I’m no DD-hater. I do occasionally stop by this Dunkin Donuts on my way to work, so I shouldn’t complain about market saturation. The basis of this one-star review is the poorly-staffed, abysmally-stocked convenience store. A stoned, starving, well-funded college student could enter Five Corner Convenience and leave without making a purchase, so poor is their selection of food and beverages. They don’t stock 20 oz Coke products… or haven’t the six or seven times I’ve stopped by for a Coke Zero. I’ve stopped by a few times after work, hungry and looking for a snack. Nothing special, just standard convenience store fare. I almost always leave empty-handed. When I’m hungry and foolish enough to enter a Store 24, the allure of plastic-wrapped goodies inevitably results in a purchase of $ 20 or so. Here? Nothing.

As I trudge up the street on my way to work every morning I pass by this little establishment, I sometimes have the will to keep walking. those days are few and far between. As I walk into the convenience store slash Dunkin Donuts the friendly man behind the counter gives me a nod and turns to fill my usual large cup of coffee with half the normal amount of sweetener and creamer(you would be amazed at how difficult this trick is for most of the DD locations I have gone to) He finishes filling the cup and asks how I am doing. We make friendly banter and occasionally I get a muffin. There is an awkward pause and I head for the door as he says«see you tomorrow» Why is this location better than all the other locations of DD? Here are a few reasons. + This is also a convenience store so there are no chairs. It is all business. In and out with my coffee. + Friendly as hell staff. + No seating = no crazy guy who smells like a festering pile of god knows what sitting there talking to his coffee cup while wrapping and unwrapping his bible for the hundredth time in five minutes. + Not staffed by the same people as the one in my neighborhood who can’t figure out that half the normal amount of cream and sugar means instead of 4 scoops it is only 2. If you are for some reason in this neighborhood and have the need for donuts, coffee, etc… Stop by.

I went into Five Corner Convenience yesterday and was amazed at how they turned the space around. The place is clean and well-lit. The staff is super friendly and there’s a Dunkin Donuts! The difference Five Corner is to the old Powderhouse Convenience is like night and day. Though the selection at Five Corner is not as expansive, at least I know everything there is within the expiration date. (Powderhouse Convenience was always really questionable… am I right?) It’s a lovely fit for the area — not to mention that whoever was making the coffee at the Dunks is a pro. Melted sugar in my iced without me having to ask for it? Amazing.

New to Powderhouse Square, Five Corner Convenience has replaced the old Powderhouse Convenience store on the circle. It is a combo convenience mart and Drunkin Gonuts… errr… I mean… Dunkin Donuts, and it has already, in just a matter of days, managed to far surpass its predecessor. The staff: Extremely welcoming and friendly. The atmosphere: Way more clean, open, and enjoyable. The prices: slightly high compared to other local competitors. It’s right by my house, so it earns mad points for accessibility. 20 cents more for a pack of cigarettes, but it sure beats the walk to Ball Square when there are brutal winter(should be spring) winds. With the new law banning cigarette sales on college campuses, Tufts smokers should be glad this place popped up a few days ago. And, compared to the previous establishment… you can have a much more genuine experience.
