If i have a night out in Laverys or MClub(back in the day) I always went to Bishops for a takeaway on the way home So nothing unusual after a few last night although woke this morning and wish i hadnt YYUUCCKK Chips were abit under cooked and the chicken was dripping in grease and half cooked Ended up having to put it in the oven for awhile and even then i couldnt bring myself to eat it What a let down The reason i give it 2 stars was one of the counter girls was lovely and friendly The others front and back of house just wanted to carryon Bishops has defo let their standards slip big time

Oh this breaks me to say this. But what happened on Saturday night. We ordered a portion of chicken goujons with chips and a portion of chips. The chicken was undercooked and batter slipping off it was raw. Had to bring it home and cook it off in the oven for 20 more minutes. This defeated the idea of fast food. The chips with the chicken were fine but the extra portion were half cooked and had to join the chicken in the oven also. To cap it off asked for salt and vinegar on both chips and got only salt on one and only vinegar on the other. A huge slip in usual standards. Also while waiting to order the wait should not include waiting until staff are done chatting to each other about their weekend. Fast is the main word in fast food!

Bishops is a nice spot for a take away or you can alternatively sit in the restaurant part. Bishops is famous for its fixed and chips which I have heard great reviews about, i hate fish so u settled with a chicken fillet burger meal. My meal was delicious and very affordable also. I would visit here again for a meal.

Bishops serves really good chip shop type food and breakfasts. However it’s interior feels a little tired and dated, so it could probably do with an image overhaul. Consists of 2 sections — a take away counter plus a ‘restaurant’ area with tables and waiter service. It was once probably considered the best chip shop in Belfast, however there’s a lot of competition nowadays with a plethora of chip shops, cafes and restaurants on the scene. Bishops is still good though — tasty grub and pleasant staff. Good veggie options also(veggie burger, veggie curry, cheesy chips etc) in addition to the standard fish, burgers, chips and breakfast fry ups.

I do like a Bishops every now and then. It is a chippy that allows you to either takeaway or sit in, and you can even sit in the restaurant section where you get the food served on plates rather than just eat from the carton! The food is tasty and filling and also a great price — they also do deals such as a fish deal where you get fish, chips, a side order(peas/beans), bread and butter, and a drink or a tea or coffee. So you’ll get a good feed! They also have desserts, icecream etc.

Ordered the smoked fish & chips, and was greeted with a mouthful of bones. The batter was soggy and the chips full of grease. In no way was this a pleasant experience. I was disappointed because we had been told this was the best place for fish and chips on Belfast, but it’s obvious that advice was from a distant memory of what the place must have been. Its a shame to see this kind of place on the state its in.

I stopped here on my first night in Northern Ireland. I was extremely jet-lagged, not feeling very well, and needed something quick and cheap. I saw Bishops and thought, «fish and chips would be a good meal!» Ehhh… I think I was wrong. Bishops left me feeling even more sick. First of all, this place cant decide if it wants to be a fast food place or a sit-down restaurant. I was so confused when I walked in because I was not sure if I was supposed to sit and order from one of the menus or walk up to the counter. After ordering from the counter I was not sure I was allowed to sit at a booth because they handed me my food in a takeout box. I will say that the meal is a good value. It was not too expensive and they practically give you the whole freaking fish. The fish is not that great though. I am used to really crispy breading on fish and theirs was just soggy and unappetizing. They also wanted to dump vinegar all over it. I know that is the European thing to do, but that really just makes me think they are trying to hide the flavor of the fish. Is there something wrong with it that they have to pour a bottle of vinegar on it? The staff was not too amazing either. I thought that they might be ignoring me because I am obviously not from the country, but after reading the other reviews I see that the service is just not good. Everyone just stood around talking and ignoring me. Uhhmm, hello?

I used to go here every sunday night… some people used to go to bangor in their souped up cars… well me and a few friends used to go here. It was kind of a game changer for me because it was the first sit in fish and chips shop I had ever really experienced. In its day it seemed to be better than it actually was but recently I fear it has kind of went to the dogs and needs to pull its socks up or it may be relegated to greasy spoon status. I hope this place lasts the test of time and that it is still a popular sunday night spot.

I unfortunately don’t subscribe to the same opinions of those who feel that bishops is worthy of some kind of idol status in the world of Belfast grease. A good friend of mine and I would come here for an occasional lunch in our first year of university and I ate usually because I was just starving rather than because I genuinely really liked the food. I always found the chips here somewhat hard and undercooked. I love a tasty battered cod as much as the rest of the nation, but the fish here is just mediocre at best. The ability to sit in is a plus, and the Maud’s ice cream at the back of the restaurant is a nice touch. The shop also offers a student discount which is appreciated even though it will only amount to an approximate 50p saving! The place is always cleaned well but somehow still has the feel of just being a bit dirty which is unfortunate. There are better ways to clog your arteries than this, and I implore you to find them ASAP!

The fact is that it’s pretty easy to get a lovely bit of white, flaky fish, then cook it to death in a deep fryer. It’s hard to get it right to the exacting standards of people who live in, say, Belfast who’ve been brought up on deep-fried stuff. I’ve always been quite impressed with the fish in Bishop’s. While this place isn’t my favourite restaurant in Belfast by a long shot, the food is good. For a chippy. Next time you’re in the restaurant part though, look up at the wooden /glazed part of the ceiling. It is warped out of shape and looks like it’s going to cave in and kill you at any second. Then, look over at the kitchen area. I’ve noticed a particulary unfriendly-looking manager(with teeth like a burnt fort) doling out bollockings to members of staff a couple of times, in front of all the customers waiting at the takeway bit. Nice. But, you know… fish, chips, bread & butter and a pot of tea is hard to beat when it’s good, and it is here.

Bishops has become a bit of an institution across Belfast and I remember coming here after a gig and thinking it was the dogs particulars. Time has passed, I’m a little older and a bit wiser and I’ve come to admire the standard of food served here yet again. The chips are home made as expected, not greasy and are usually well crisped(however they can be a bit dry something) The fish I cannot comment on primarily because of an allergy(I blame it on being force fed fish fingers as a child but anyway) The burgers are spot on and you can sit in if you want to, it’s quite a large place and it’s open late for the drunken revellers who will inevitably fill this place up come 1am.

This place has a great reputation as a quality purveyor of traditional fish and chips. I seem to remember getting some fish and chips from here after a big night out and they near killed me. Seriously the portion of fish was bladdy massive and as was the tray of chips which were chunky and crispy. None of your stringy McDonalds chips here. Oh no. The fish and chips meal is around £5, which is great value considering the portions could feed a family for a week. You can either sit in or take-away in this Bishops. I would really only partake in eating heart attack food like this whilst recovering from a night out, it’s not healthy but it hits the spot!

Man, this is one of my fave chippies. Forget about the skanky ‘takeout’ bit… get yourself into the proper restaurant(preferably near the fire on a cold day) and order cod and chips with all the trimming’s. Yep, get the mushy peas, cup of tea and two slices of pan loaf. Butter? Yes please and bring some mayo on the side as well. As well as the brilliance of the food there’s a really cool tiled floor and a small stained glass roof skylight which gives the place a bright airy feel. I know sometimes the staff can be a bit inexperienced but they normally get forgiven when the food arrives. On top of all this when you’re heading out to pay there’s an ice cream stall so get yourself a wee cone for the walk home. I would definitely recommend Bishops for that once in a few months comfort food treat. Pros: Great setting, portions are generous. Cons: Staff can be a bit slow.

Bishops is one of Belfast’s most well known chippies and the rumours are true– the fish is great! They’re open from 11am for a great breakfast at only a fiver and remain open until the early hours of the morning for the parade of people spilling onto the streets from the nearby clubs and pubs. Bishops does a mean curry chip which really hits the spot after one too many! Its located in Shaftsbury square amongst the ever popular bars such as Laverys and MClub which means its always busy so you know the food hasn’t been sitting keeping warm for hours on end. I really love their cod and chips and the restaurant itself is really clean and the staff friendly. You’re never waiting for food too long, which is good otherwise the delicious smell would drive you crazy!

I worship Bishops. See what I did there? Anyway as all the other reviewers have mentioned Bishops is a traditional Fish and Chip shop that generally has a really good reputation. The reason I am reviewing it is because last night I found my new drunken specialty in Bishops. It was a Peppered Chip, this is basically peppered sauce on chips, but it is the type of peppered sauce you would expect to find on a juicy steak. The chips literally swim in the stuff, so make sure you get a fork because no one likes a guy/gal with sauce all over them. This delightful dish only costs 3 quid and is unbelievable. Trust me. So next time you stagger out of Groovy train on a Friday night head to Bishops and experience the beautness(made up word but I think it is fitting).

Isn’t it so rewarding when there’s a really good fish and chip shop at your disposal? I mean, anybody can fire some random food into a deep fat fryer, but not everyone can deliver proper fish and chips with the type of consistency as Bishops do. I’m very rarely up that end of town on a night out anymore, but when I did used to hang out around the university a lot, I used to head to Bishop’s for a cheesey chip at the end of the night. It’s a huge place that’s one half takeaway and one half restaurant. If I were you, I’d try both!

Wahey! It shows if you open a chipshop here that it does not have to be pure rubbish! Bishops is a very good fish and chip shop and often it is one of the only chipshops I’ll go to that I don’t need a lot of alcohol first. Have been here with my parents and they enjoyed it. The food is cheap too so its good. I know people have arrived hungover for a fry and come out with a smile on their face so that says it all. Usually if a chipshop is bad, then there is lots to say. If it is good, like Bishops, then it’s recommended. Definately worth trying.

As far as Fish and Chips go this is pretty good. It is definitely a cut above the deluge of kebabs, pizza and burgers that is around this area so well worth checking out. The quality of the food is excellent. When I head in I would usually get the chicken burger, chips and a drink and it comes to around the £6 mark which is fairly standard, but the quality of the food makes it pretty good value in my mind. The menu is pretty varied with lasagne and quiche on offer which is pretty novel for a chippy but if they’re as nice as the usual stuff you pick up then they’re onto a winner. You can sit in or take away, so it works well if you are stopping off or one your way home to scoff down on something you know you shouldn’t be eating. Definitely worth a vistit if you fancy some decent, traditional Northern Irish Fish and Chips.

Oh wow, this is the big momma of fish and chips for me. If you are in the city centre and in the mood for fish and chips, don’t go anywhere else. The husband and I tried this place for the first time last week and really liked it. You can order all kinds of stuff like vegetarian quiche, burgers, lasagne and curry but that seems bizarre to me. If you go to a restaurant famous for its fish and chips, then order the fish and chips for crying out loud. I was initially a little alarmed to see the prices — about £5−6 for battered cod etc. Once I had read on, I was delighted to find that this included chips, mushy peas, bread and butter and a drink. Hard to beat and of course the drink has to be Diet Coke to cancel out the calories in the food. Fact. We sat in one of the little booths and looked out at the slightly depressing sight of Bradbury Place until our food arrived. So many carbs and calories on one plate and I couldn’t wait to dive right in, but not before salt(no pepper) and lashings of vinegar had gone on. Now you wouldn’t eat this kind of food every night, nor indeed every week, but on the odd occasion you do, it’s fab. Thick batter, just the right amount of grease and white fluffy cod, along with big fat chips and a dollop of mushy peas. You have to put vinegar on the mushy peas too. Don’t mock until you’ve tried it. Yum yum all the way to a clean plate for me. I noticed you can order your fish grilled. Now what is that all about? Would you go to KFC and ask for grilled chicken or McDS and ask for a baked potato? Exactly. So don’t go to Bishops and ask for grilled fish. The very idea of it. But please do go and ask for battered cod, chips and mushy peas.
